On the east side of Jeju, there is a modest stone house that directly faces the sea. Despite its rough exterior, the space is minimally refined with stone walls and flagstone, embodying the essence of Jeju. The name "Badang-bongbong" in Jeju dialect means "filled with the sea."
Passing through a small stone wall resembling a castle wall, along the Olle Trail, you come across 'Jeongnang,' which serves as the gateway to Jeju. Upon entering the yard, you encounter the traditional Jeju house structure, consisting of indoor and outdoor spaces. Embraced by a wide eave and roof weathered by sea winds and the passage of time, the stone house exudes a rough yet comforting surface. The indoor space includes a bedroom, a living room, a simple kitchen, and a hotel-style bathroom. The old charm of the house is felt through the flagstone floor and slightly creaking wooden doors. The open and high wooden ceiling brings a sense of comfort to the dwellers. Pulling back the curtains on the windows reveals a full view of the sea, creating an illusion of a house floating on the ocean. Across the yard, the outdoor space with its rugged stone wall finish is an attractive area. Enjoying a jacuzzi while feeling the cool water falling from the ceiling seems to wash away worldly concerns. The flagstone platform is equipped with a tea set, inviting one to either enjoy tea or lie down peacefully, gazing at the sky and sea. It is a space that provides solace in itself, even without doing anything.
It preserves the structure of Jeju's traditional house. Experience a rough but warm stone house.
Enjoy a jacuzzi in the street outside with its attractive rough stone walls. When water falls from the ceiling, my thoughts seem to be washed away.
Beyond the yard, the clear blue Pyeongdaeri sea spreads out. Open the windows wide and fully enjoy the sea.
