A modern reimagining of a Joseon-era byeolseo (scholar’s retreat), Goyobyeolseo Book Stay is a private hanok designed for deep thought and quiet reading. Once a study hall and writing sanctuary, the space continues its legacy of silence and reflection. Perched above the southern sea, it invites you to step away from the noise of everyday life and enter a rhythm of contemplation.
Goyobyeolseo Book Stay is a secluded hanok offering space for rest and thought. Divided into three themes—SAYU (contemplation), JEONGYANG (rest), and SOYO (wandering)—the house flows through a living room, a jacuzzi bath, a traditional daechung maru, bedroom, and garden. Each space is thoughtfully crafted for thinking, resting, and slow meandering. Settle into the walnut desk of the living room for uninterrupted reflection, let the warm water quiet your mind in JEONGYANG, and wander through the garden as the South Sea unfolds before you.
Tucked into one corner of the living room, the Writer’s Room features a 2.5-meter solid walnut desk and a curated collection of books. A space designed for writing and deep focus, it has become a word-of-mouth favorite among authors, many of whom have stayed here.
On the wooden daechung maru, beneath the clay-tiled roof and exposed beams, enjoy a quiet foot bath while gazing out over the sea. This timeworn space offers a peaceful pause, where your thoughts can settle and stretch.
Every window at Goyobyeolseo is placed with the heart of cha-gyeong—the borrowed scenery. The stone wall just beyond the desk, the ocean and village beyond the bedroom and sofa—each frame captures a still-life of the South Sea, turning every moment into a painting.
