While strolling through the meandering alleys of the ancient city of Tainan, visitors will find the guesthouse “Laile” at the heart of the city. The owner of the guesthouse is none other than the celebrated interior designer Jimmy Pan. When Pan stumbled across the shabby building – the only compound housing structure in the area, he was determined to redesign and renovate the building to bring to life his own imaginations of what an old house in Tainan should feel like. This was how Laile was born.
When I first thought of the name, I wanted it to be a name that would give people a warm invitation to stay in Tainan. As a kid, I would walk through the alleyways in the evening and be greeted by the neighbors sitting or standing at the door of each house. "Have you eaten? Come and eat!"
