Embarking on a meditative journey, one encounters the practice of mindfulness, originating from the East and embraced by the West. This profound state of awareness allows individuals to observe their body and mind, deeply connecting with their own existence. Mindfulness serves as a sanctuary from the chaotic demands of everyday life, guiding individuals back to their core essence. Through focused breaths taken through the nose, and the rhythmic rise and fall of the chest, a newfound sense of tranquility emerges from the silence. The serenity experienced during meditation bears resemblance to an enriching travel adventure, where the alignment of a weary body and mind enables complete self-focus.
Among the places that evoke the essence of meditative rest, one that stands out is Batdam House. Nestled peacefully along a village alley, this humble abode is encompassed by a low stone wall and a sprawling tangerine field. Upon entering the Batdam House, one immediately senses the vitality of a life intertwined with nature. Rather than eradicating or dismantling its accumulated strength, this space reveres the power of years and seamlessly integrates with the surrounding region. While the traditional Jeju-style house has undergone renovation, it manages to strike a harmonious balance between delicate design and the advancements of IoT technology, prioritizing the quality of rejuvenation. This thoughtful approach considers both the serene ambiance found in Jeju's mountain villages and the convenience of its guests. Batdam House serves as a haven where visitors can experience a yearning for tranquility and forge a connection with nature. Just as meditation involves closing one's eyes and focusing on breath, journeying through the spaces leading to the four houses gradually diminishes the distance to one's inner self.

If Only One Could Delve Into the Recollections of the Place
Batdam House, the inaugural creation in the Stayfolio collection, represents the culmination of extensive contemplation by the team. It embodies the tireless dedication of experts from diverse fields and processes. When the Stayfolio team first set foot on the premises of Batdam House, opening its door felt like stepping into an uncharted realm. The planning team meticulously crafted the design, aiming to forge a connection between the spatial memories of the original field and the experiential journey.
Rather than creating a mere visual spectacle, the team sought to leave a lasting impression, ensuring a holistic spatial concept. The overall ambiance of Batdam House was conceived with a focus on texture rather than color, harmoniously blending elements rather than starkly defining boundaries. The name "Batdam House" itself carries the essence of the space's intended offering. The "batdam," a low stone wall symbolizing the field's boundary, was constructed to evoke a sense of tranquility and inspiration, harmonizing with the natural surroundings, thus establishing a healing sanctuary.

The Stillness Intensified in Harmony with Nature
Waheul-ri, aptly named for the mountains embracing the village, exudes a tranquil ambiance in the heart of Jeju. Tucked away from the bustling main roads, the village's narrow alleyways face each other with a sense of intimacy, setting it apart from the more developed areas of the island. Amongst the charming landscape, short houses and weathered stone walls whisper tales of time, while old stone houses emit a comforting allure. The village emanates a warm and inviting presence, as if extending a friendly welcome to its visitors.
Nestled unassumingly within the village, Batdam House holds a special place. Rather than standing out or demanding attention, it seamlessly blends with its surroundings, embodying a sense of organic unity. The remarkable aspect of this space lies in its innate connection to the natural environment. Adjacent to the site is a tangerine field, a presence that greatly influenced the project's emphasis on harmony with nature. The therapy experienced while gazing upon the endless expanse of tangerine trees offers a profound wonder unique to Jeju, unmatched by any other location on the island.
MAKING STORY
Batdam House was meticulously designed to highlight the distinctive charm of old Jeju houses, showcasing their unique beauty. The designer sought to preserve the inherent energy that captivated them during their initial visit to Batdam House, and these traces can be discovered in intricate details. The enduring basalt walls, firmly standing against the passage of time, were repurposed with added insulation, while the rafters and Sangryangmun of the main house, uncovered during the ceiling removal process, were thoughtfully integrated.
Even in the selection of finishing materials, careful consideration was given to maintaining the harmonious atmosphere that envelops the space. The interior finishing material ingeniously incorporated the mud from the doorway wall, further enhancing the organic unity. The landscaping choices also reflected the objective of maximizing the vitality of the space. The long-standing mandarin and camellia trees have become emblematic symbols of Batdam House, representing a profound reverence for the original form of the house and the accumulated passage of time.
By artfully combining materials with a rich history and elements that amplify the ambiance, Batdam House embodies a completed atmosphere that exudes character and allure.
Throughout the planning process of Batdam House, the designer placed great emphasis on the healing power of connecting with nature. The objective was to seamlessly incorporate the surrounding natural elements into the space and establish internal connections. Instead of an unfolded design, the focus was on creating a composition that invited a sense of gathering and fostering a purely experiential environment. This intention is aptly reflected in the overall structural concept, guiding visitors through the doorway, main house, outer house, and lower house.
Just as a shadow gradually deepens, the quality of rest amplifies as one progresses through the space. Opening the doorway reveals a welcoming garden, designed to provide a space for hospitality. The main house serves as a gathering space, allowing visitors to harmonize with their companions. The outer house offers opportunities for diverse experiences centered around water, while the lower house is dedicated to enhancing the sensory perception of one's own body. These themes became the guiding principles for selecting colors and materials. The entirety of the space exudes a sense of gradual transition rather than standing out distinctly. The main color palette draws inspiration from the surrounding hues, creating a natural gradient. Shades of beige resembling dry soil and basalt colors symbolizing Jeju blend harmoniously. The result is a Batdam House space that seamlessly integrates with the natural ambiance, evoking a serene mood without overwhelming it.
SPACE
A Moment of Profound Serenity
As one enters the alley, a sense of tranquility emanates from the gatehouse, embraced by tall camellia trees. This is a moment when anticipation builds in the air, surrounded by the secret ambiance of the stone walls that exude an undisturbed essence of the years gone by. Upon opening the door and stepping inside, the main house and the outer house unveil themselves, nestled on either side of the enchanting garden, while the lower house rests on the opposing end. Breezy grasses sway gently, and tangerine trees stand densely, painting a tapestry of vibrant greens that unfolds before one's eyes.
Traversing the pathway into the main house, blinds lift and melodies play, as if extending a warm welcome to visitors. Comprising a bedroom, a kitchen, and a dining area, the main house envelops guests in a soft color palette and an inviting atmosphere, perfect for engaging in comfortable conversations with companions. Whether savoring freshly ground coffee or tea from a hand mill and tea bag, or simply basking in the sunlight while seated on the toenmaru, the front window provides an ideal spot for moments of relaxation. Transitioning through the back door within the living room leads to Hujeong, a serene garden that exudes a profound ambiance distinct from the main garden. It offers an idyllic space for leisurely strolls, providing respite and tranquility during quiet moments.
On the opposite side, stands the outer house, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the tactile textures of water. Divided into seating areas, a spa, and a swimming pool, this space offers various water-centric experiences. It encourages surrendering oneself to the soothing embrace of water, be it enjoying a cup of tea, indulging in a sauna or hot bath, or even taking a dip in the refreshing cold water. The expansive folding doors, overlooking the endless tangerine field, blur the boundaries of space, allowing for a seamless connection with the surrounding natural beauty. In the swimming pool, leading to the outer deck, guests can delight in swimming or basking in the sun against the backdrop of lush greenery. The experience of nurturing the mind and body while gazing at the reddening sky leaves an indelible imprint in memory.
Finally, the last space encountered, after passing through the gate quarters, main quarters, and outer quarters, is the lower quarters. This area is thoughtfully designed to foster self-reflection and introspection, with a focus on creating a serene atmosphere through dim lighting and dark hues. Notably, compared to the other spaces, there is only one window facing the outside. Soft light cascades from this elongated window, casting a comforting glow, while the gentle movement of the green trees beyond enhances the soothing view. The lower house offers a sanctuary for guests to unwind and rejuvenate. A motion bed aids in deep relaxation, a heated storage keeps towels warm, and aroma oils infuse the air, providing a therapeutic environment to release the tensions often unnoticed in daily life.

Batdam-House
What is the origin story of Batdam House?
[Designer Suyoen-Kim] With the gracious contribution of Ko's family, we were able to bring Batdam House to life, intertwining cherished memories with fresh experiences. Our shared aspiration was to address the challenges of revitalizing and preserving vacant houses. Though the journey was not without its challenges, our collective vision propelled us forward, aligning our efforts to embark on this project together.
I'm curious about your interpretation of the space's history.
[Designer Wookhee-Jeon] Recognizing the architectural influence of traditional Jeju houses, we sought to honor their distinctive character by incorporating the names Angeori (anchae) and Outside Street (anchae). As a result, the two central buildings within the four spaces were christened the main house and the outer house, paying homage to the rich heritage of Jeju's architectural tradition.
[Designer Suyoen-Kim] Upon visiting a Batdam House, I was struck by the presence and vitality emanating from the existing households and aged furniture. Notably, the basalt walls were reutilized with added insulation, while the rafters and Sangryangmun of the main house were preserved during the ceiling removal process. The accumulated energy of these elements has undoubtedly contributed to the seamless integration and enduring charm of Batdam House since its inception.
Contrarily, I believe there was a process of removing and adding specific elements.
[Designer Suyoen-Kim] Instead of pursuing a defined design, my focus was on capturing the overall atmosphere of subtlety and gradation. My aim was not to create distinct objects or fragmented elements, but rather to establish a cohesive and harmonious ambiance. Every aspect of the design, from material selection to spatial arrangement and furniture design, was approached with these concepts in mind, resulting in a seamless integration of these principles throughout.
Kindly provide an overview of the therapeutic experiences available at Batdam House.
[Designer Wookhee-Jeon] A diverse range of experiences has been meticulously designed to immerse guests in a rich and captivating stay. Through advanced technology, I have incorporated a mode setting feature accessible via an iPad, allowing guests to customize the ambiance of their room based on specific categories such as conversation or meditation. This mode setting influences various elements including blinds, lighting, and music, creating a seamless and immersive experience tailored to each guest's preferences. It is my sincere hope that guests can truly embrace the transformative journey of this experience, feeling a gradual immersion into its captivating sequence.
[Designer Suyoen-Kim] During the planning phase of Batdam House, my primary inspiration stemmed from nature, igniting a desire to curate a stay that exuded profound healing and therapeutic qualities through a profound connection with the natural world. Considering the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the limitations it posed, I sought alternative ways to offer these experiences without the need for hiring a therapist or providing actual massages. As a result, I developed a program that incorporates self-care practices. For those interested in receiving a massage-like experience, we have provided small hot packs and warm towels for relaxation purposes. Additionally, I have created guidelines outlining how to utilize aromatic oils through rolling techniques, enabling guests to indulge in a soothing and invigorating self-care ritual.
How did you approach differentiating each space based on its main theme?
[Designer Wookhee-Jeon] Every house within Batdam House offers a distinct and unique form of relaxation. To further accentuate these differences, I carefully curated each house with specific styling choices. The main house exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, adorned with soft fabrics and the comforting presence of wood. In contrast, the outer house features bright and minimalistic elements, creating a vibrant yet uncluttered ambiance. As for the lower house, it showcases living objects crafted from exceptional materials, highlighting their inherent characteristics. By thoughtfully accentuating the spatial qualities of each house, I aimed to provide guests with a tailored and immersive experience that perfectly complements their desired mode of relaxation.
What experiences do you recommend indulging in at Batdam House?
[Designer Wookhee-Jeon] Beyond the threshold lies an inviting outdoor space, complete with a deck and a set of outdoor furniture. Positioned under the open sky, a pair of comfortable chairs accompanied by a table await, beckoning you to indulge in the tranquil morning ambiance. As you bask in the soothing hues of Jeju's scenic blues, allow yourself to unwind while embracing the gentle melodies of birdsong. It is in these serene moments of quiet observation that true relaxation can be found.
[Designer Suyoen-Kim] As you cleanse yourself in the lower house, the subdued lighting creates a comforting ambiance. It's a rare luxury in our everyday lives to take the time to tend to our bodies slowly, such as applying body lotion with utmost care. Let us pause for a while and indulge in the soothing act of nurturing our bodies.
