Traditional Korean House Accommodations Enhance the Quality of Life

There is a lot of wind and waves in this life. Human beings play a very small role in this universe. As it is impossible to predict the future, sadness follows joy and then lives in a fluctuating state of joy, anger, and joy. In what manner should we approach the world? It is largely invisible what matters most. It is not necessary to endure life in order to make a better tomorrow, but rather to embrace it with a positive attitude. My life revolves around the correct 'posture' of my body and mind.

Let us receive the energy of Hanok, which has been protecting an alley in Anguk-dong for nearly a century. Here you will find AnGilSaGa, a scholar's house that has been waiting for you. Scholars are more than simply those who strive to cultivate knowledge. The term refers to a person who constantly builds virtues in order to build a complete character. In AnGilSaGa, there is a certain class. Space is filled with spirit. However, humble in nature. In addition to restoring the historical style of blood transfusion housing, the house was filled with thick and profound aesthetic wood elements and space elements that contained craft value as if the house were a night sky. With the barrel window covering the L-shaped structure, the outer diameter is transformed into a work of art. The moist little moss garden as well as the open-air bath, which has become a part of nature, convey a sense of relaxation as if they were playing and enjoying the arts. In this manner, AnGilSaGa reaches out to us.

Maintain an upright posture. I feel as if I need to have the right posture and the right mindset here for some reason. A house that enhances a person's life, a house that challenges me, a house that lowers itself and elevates me, even though it has a noble appearance that can never be lowered. We would like to introduce you to AnGilSaGa, the home of the scholar.

Through Hanok, We Receive Comfort

While working at his workplace for 15 years, host Yong-seok Kang, who plans and operates Angil Saga, paid attention to the importance of space, hoping for a healthier and more independent future. The experience he gained working on hotel development and traveling to various hotels across the country during the working period motivated him to create his own accommodation. In spite of this, the direction of the project had to be altered due to the pandemic situation. A coincidence and a connection led to the discovery of "Hanok". At first, he was not very interested in hanok, but he says he cannot forget the impression he got after hearing a hanok. As he gazed at the scenery he saw in the hanok on a rainy day, he wept. The result will be Maison de Stay in 2020 and Iho Sorak in 2021, followed by AnGilSaGa in 2022. As an example, AnGilSaGa is a project that has worked hard to preserve the beauty and dignity of Hanoks, and as a result of this approach, a high-quality space has been created.

There is No Difference Between Yesterday and Tomorrow

Anguk-dong, where AnGilSaGa is located, is a unique neighborhood in Seoul that combines the appearance of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In the past, it was located in the center of Bukchon, where people gathered to socialize, and it was always a busy place connecting areas such as Insa-dong and Jongno. As a result, it has recently become an attractive destination for both Koreans and foreigners. There is unique scenery in one alley, ranging from quiet traditional tea houses and galleries to trendy bakeries and cafes and fashion brand showrooms. Anguk-dong has established itself as an area where you can observe the trends of this time period.

AnGilSaGa, which combines traditional and modern elements in an exquisite manner, maintains the geographical context of Anguk-dong. It is especially interesting to have a close relationship with the surrounding sites in terms of history. The building is located very close to the Neungseong Wigung House in Bukchon. King Yeongjo built Neungseong Wigung Palace on the ridge where King Hwagil, the youngest daughter of King Yeongjo, married Min-hwa Gu. As a result of the energy of the king, and the love of the family at the same time, this historical background and the energy contained within it flowed into AnGilSaGa, so all those who lived here have succeeded in their endeavors
MAKING STORY

We were not only inspired by the history and atmosphere of the hanok and its surroundings, but also by the stories of those who lived here. During the course of an interview with the former owner, I became aware of the connection between the house and its former owner. It is the kindness and neatness that imbue the body of a successful businessman living in an old house that make people feel comfortable at the same time. In an effort to recall the scholar, host Yong-seok Kang naturally did so. In conclusion, the place is now known as "An" (meaning "comfortable"), "Gil" (meaning "road"), "Sa" (meaning "scholar"), and "Ga" (meaning "home"). A comfortable house in which a scholar resided

Following the decision to adopt the name AnGilSaGa, the direction of the design, such as color and material, was also narrowed. The Hanok style is usually associated with white walls, brown pillars, and straight lines and grids, but Angilsa Temple stands out from this trend. The reason for this is that AnGilSaGa reflects the serious and calm feeling one experiences when visiting nearby palaces such as Deoksugung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Gyeongbokgung Palace. The hanok atmosphere embodied the image of the space by reflecting the more luxurious and elegant character of the space.

As far as structure is concerned, AnGilSaGa can be viewed as two key elements that are original. The Soohyeol housing and the open-air bath. It was important to ensure that both elements were completed in a manner that respects the existing architectural structure and the surrounding environment. First of all, in the case of regenerative architecture, it is very important to determine what to save and what to throw away in the existing space, and the existing hanok in Angilsa Temple required extensive demolition due to the accumulation of deep traces of time over the past hundred years. Yong-seok Kang sought ways to preserve and save Gudeuljang, which only appears in traditional hanoks, after lifting the floor nearly three times. During the process, what came to mind was "Soohyeol housing," a historical form of housing that has existed since prehistoric times. After digging down the floor, how to deal with the heat rising from the ground. Due to this decision, the floor between the dining area and tea ceremony area was preserved in a recessed shape, creating a unique sense of space.

The garden and open-air bath are also important elements of the space. Gudeuljang stone, used in the existing house, was used in the garden to add meaning, and the open-air bath was also designed in conjunction with the garden so that it could feel like a part of the pond, rather than merely a bathtub. On the other side of the garden, there is an open-air bath, which occupies approximately 60-70% of the yard, and a stone stepping-stone bridge is incorporated to harmonize the design and function of the space. As a result, the open-air bath, which is the mainstay of the stay, was constructed in a manner that allows it to be used throughout all four seasons regardless of the temperature. To address this problem, the insulation material was thickened five times that of other accommodations, and the facilities were strengthened, in contrast to Jeju Island, where the climate is warm.#
SPACE

Trace back the space and suggest a new style

The hemp cloth acts as a natural cover when you open the gate and enter. Located between the open-air bath and the gate, it creates an atmosphere of mystery and secrecy. Upon opening the screen, you will see a small detached house on the right and the main building on the left. The open-air bath is reminiscent of a pond in a Morse landscape and wraps your eyes in comfort. An open-air bath with a length of 2.8 meters and a width of 2.3 meters. It is attractive because it can be used throughout the year.

Upon entering the main building, the kitchen, living room, tea ceremony room, and bedroom are all easily accessible. In the kitchen, sinks and various electronic devices are arranged alongside a generous four-person table, and the sink and electronics are seamlessly integrated, giving the appearance of a table. The kitchen is accompanied by a powder room and a bathroom, and on the other side, a living room in the form of a blood transfusion residence. By using the site where the Gudeuljang once stood, a sense of the site of a very old house is conveyed. This living room has electric blinds installed in order to view movies with a beam projector, creating a more immersive atmosphere due to the use of steps to create a sense of space. It is impressive that the main area of the main building is the tea ceremony space connected to the living room. Stone is used to conveying the feel of inkstones and ink used by old scholars, while the landscape of the back garden at the bottom of the wall provides a sense of comfort.

Through collaboration with a variety of craft artists, the interior of AnGilSaGa exhibits artistic elegance. There are artworks by So Mi-dang's Ko So-mi artist on the linen and curtains, a bowl by Eun-kyung Ham, a farmer's studio, furniture props by Ki-yeol Seo, and art works by Sang-ho Kim on the bowl.
INTERVIEW

AnGilSaGa
Could you please explain the meaning of the name?
AnGilSaGa refers to a comfortable residence where a successful scholar resided. The terms used are "An" (meaning "comfortable"), "Gil" (meaning "road"), "Sa" (meaning "scholar"), and "Ga" (meaning "home").
My interest is piqued by the location characteristics and advantages of AnGilSaGa.
It was very easy to intuitively interpret the location of accommodation, transportation, food, and tourism. Insadong Shopping Street and Anguk Station on Subway Line 3 are both within a minute's walk of each other. On foot, you can also reach Ikseon-dong and Gyeongbokgung Palace in about seven minutes.
Its historical significance is enhanced by its proximity to the site of Neungseongwi Palace in Bukchon. The site of Neungseongwi Palace was reportedly constructed by King Yeongjo when his youngest daughter, Yeongjo, married Min-hwa Gu on the ridge. The site of Neungseong Wigung is also located in AnGilSaGa, since it is located close to 60 meters away.
I am interested in learning more about branding.
This reminds me of the first time I met the owner of the house. I was very interested in learning what the relationship was between the house of the past and the house of those who lived here in the past. House of those who lived here in the past. This is a hanok that has been owned by the owner's grandfather since his grandfather's grandfather. However, the location must have been very pleasant. The owner, his brothers, fathers, and uncles graduated from prestigious universities such as Seoul National University and owned a successful shipping company. When he saw this location, a passing monk commented that it was a perfect spot. It was evident that the site of this house was blessed with luck and energy. Scholars were born and raised in this house. It was a comfortable conversation with the owner and the mind of the time, and from that experience, branding was born. The AnGilSaGa is composed of many keywords such as comfortable people, scholars, old houses, and successful lives.
In your opinion, what was the most important aspect of the design?
When I first encountered this house, there were too many traces of time left behind. It is estimated to be older than 1929. It was a tile roof, but it was not a Western house or a hanok, but an old house. After the demolition began, the old wooden structure tilted so much that it could not support the roof. We decided to start with demolition first and plan it out, but once it began, the roof could not be supported. Furthermore, the floor was so old that every time it was demolished, a new floor appeared. Only after the last floor was demolished did the muddle field emerge.
We began designing at that time. A canopy covered all walls except the outer walls, leaving the soil walls, pillars, and rafters exposed in the kitchen. The living room on the floor where the Gudeuljang was located was designated as a blood transfusion residential area. There was an open-air bath in the bedroom and yard, as well as a fixed window facing the yard to create a sense of openness between the front and back. As a result of the Gyeonghoeru Pond in Gyeongbokgung Palace, the open-air bath was conceived. We chose natural stone granite for the yard finish material and paid attention to the freezing prevention system, hot water, and water pressure so that we could use the pond even in the cold winter months. Moreover, glass blocks were added to secure lighting, and brick-shaped blocks were constructed as Korean food, rather than ordinary squares.
Also, please describe the contents inside and outside the space to be experienced.
In Seoul, AnGilSaGa is proud to have the largest open-air bath. Hot water is available throughout the year due to its size of 2.8m x 2.3m and depth of 0.75m. By utilizing the colors of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Unhyeongung Palace, you can experience staying in an old luxury hanok. There will be a sense of richness if you are able to enjoy the tea ceremony space planned inside together. As a modern element, I installed a beam projector, which appears to be highly utilized by students.
Last but not least, if you have anything to say to the people who will remain.
Last but not least, if you have anything to say to the people who will remain.
Once again, I would like to emphasize that AnGilSaGa is a distinguished hanok stay. It was not only helpful for me to get advice from the general managers of nearby luxury hotels and from current hoteliers, but I also improved the quality by sharing the appearance after it had been completed. I am confident that I have created a level of comfort and luxury that even hotels cannot match. Thank you.

Knows Anguk is the third project of Knows, which presents a variety of cultural content plans. A retro-style interior creates a sense of nostalgia, but the gourmet experience offered here is more trendy than ever before. There is a new menu for Knows Anguk as well as Seongsu-woon's coffee, dessert, and wine. Watching movies and listening to music that enjoyed an era while enjoying a cocktail has already made me feel emotional.

STAY

Enjoying the atmosphere while strolling through the interrupted time

Being invited to someone's home can sometimes be a subtle and itchy experience. Although it is not a big secret, it is due to the familiarity and proximity that I am willing to show my comfortable side. In spite of the appearance, the interior is not as warm as it appears on the outside. We are beckoned by the prowler in front of the gate quietly. Recite slowly, feeling the atmosphere. As soon as the locked door is opened, a new world emerges that was difficult to predict. The water glistening over the hemp curtains fluttering in the wind, as well as the warm energy slowly rising in the air. Additionally, the interior of the main building, which gently illuminates the barrel, resembles a deep darkness but has a gentle light, and you can enjoy a beautiful garden if you enter. It is difficult for me to hear the music, but I am certain that some soft and clear sound is ringing in my ears. Does it sound like water or birds?

4 POINT OF VIEW

ORIGINALITY

A unique Soohyeol residential structure with internal and external connectivity

This is an exquisite blend of tradition and modernity. A convergent form of hanok that is hard to find elsewhere. In addition to maintaining the old hanok structure approximately 100 years old, it emphasised the traditional pit-type blood transfusion residential structure that has been used for centuries. With the texture of time that has already been sufficiently stacked, it has developed a deeper history. Nevertheless, this hanok also bears witness to our present and future. A barrel window was designed on both the courtyard and wall sides, with the necessary elements of openness, comfort, and practicality neatly hidden by built-ins. A spatial element that spans the past, the present, and the future.

DESIGN

To determine the tone and manners of the scholar's home

What was life like for scholars in those days? A house is a living space that reflects a resident's lifestyle. Combining materials that evoke old trees over the years and textures that give a simple yet neat feeling evokes a strange imagination. Scholars who lived here would have aimed for a tone and manner similar to this. What were your life style and taste like? We are invited to the scholar's house, AnGilSaGa, by the pleasant imagination stretching in all directions. In order to clear my mind and body, I try to focus on getting my body right as if I owned the property.

Hospitality

Anguk-dong's Waiyu, Transcendent of Time

Waiyu. It refers to sightseeing while lying down. Having pictures of scenic spots and historic sites at home and experiencing the landscape and scenery as if you were traveling there. You can experience Waiyu throughout your stay here, where a painting unfolds everywhere you look. It is possible to lie in the most comfortable position in the world and enjoy the beauty of a small garden and water space, or to soak yourself in this picturesque landscape to take advantage of the spa and enjoy the panoramic view of the space, giving rise to a sense of a meditative state.

PRICE

Experience the luxury of an old house in a unique manner

There is an incomparable flow to the space. Hanok Stay was designed and operated with the experience of the host, who has planned and operated various spaces. Although the finishing materials and construction work are completed, the level of detail is impressive, and the work that was collaborated with the craft artist has been incorporated into the interior or has been used as lighting and various props with oriental aesthetics. In the case of Hanji Blind, it is also the work of a craftsman who is no longer visible. A hanok where a movie is unfolded is composed of various design elements interwoven together.
