As Cozy Landscapes Overlap, a Longing Develops

After a long day, there is nothing better than lying down and feeling like you have fallen into a warm blanket. At times, it is necessary to fill your entire heart and body with such happiness. It is not unusual for me to miss a place or a person that warmly wraps my heart and body like a dry blanket under the sun whenever I wish to sit down. In addition to leading to an escape from daily life, this longing also causes you to build another layer of longing somewhere just for you, as we all know. You need to build up your memories in order to be able to step forward with strength. Bringing every day to life. It consists of a small alley adjacent to Jeju's beach, which is well known to everyone, and a low stone house built in the style of Jeju stone. Over and above the long-standing longing accumulated in the building's appearance, there is a place where visitors can accumulate their own longings.

Stones, water, fire, and incense are stacked in "Anok." Anok is a Jeju dialect that is cozy. Every individual builds a cozy longing in this place where cozy scenery overlaps. As they are surrounded by the ingredients of nature and the longing of time, they are able to build memories of longing. A memory left with longing soon becomes a source of strength. The ability to take a leisurely step toward a similar daily trip of daily life, as well as a daily trip of fear and anxiety that sprouts because tomorrow is unpredictable.

Connect the Old with the New by Listening to the Primacy of Nature

The Z-Lab, which focuses on total design based on space, has recently put accommodation-type projects in the spotlight. The space continues to be an experience, and the project is constantly taking into consideration the characteristics and size of the neighborhood and region in which it is located. As opposed to merely being a space, this work creates an organic connection with the region and naturally reveals a story. Such concerns were also raised by Anok. Throughout the entire process, you plan, design, name, and add experiences and content to an existing building that was collapsing. Considering the location of the sea village west of Jeju in Gwideok-ri, I put all my efforts into finding the story of Anok and the physical properties of the raw materials that would resolve the story in type. While listening to the original stories passed down by Jeju nature, they carefully divided the boundaries between what to keep and what to discard, and then seamlessly connected the old and the new. The next story will be told naturally by those who experience and stay in Anok.

Providing Protection to the Anoks Through Its Low and Cozy Terrain

The name Gwidok-ri is unfamiliar. Gwideok-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si, is a typical rural village located in a flat and level area. A low fence is connected to the edge of the field using basalt and is situated adjacent to the western sea of Jeju. Specifically, here the walls are made of pine nuts, and small stones are stacked in groups in order to move between walls, creating a unique form of movement. It is located on Jinjil-gil, which is connected to a road with many field walls, and this Jinjil-gil is named as it is a road that people take to reach a mountainous area. With its field walls or pine trees made of small basalt, it evokes a different feeling from the Olle Trail, which is characterized by large stones.

There is a Hallym coastal road connecting Batdam's Gwideok Gwemul Garden with Ongpo Intersection on the beach side of the village, which provides a beautiful backdrop regardless of the weather. It is a quiet, attractive place along the winding edge of the beach that is not well known, making it an attractive location with a calm atmosphere. Anok is located very close to the sea after passing through the middle of this road and entering the inner road. It is impressive to see the characteristic low terrain. There is a small step that falls a little lower than the road, as well as a natural wall protecting the area. As a result, it is protected from unpredictable and volatile weather conditions on Jeju, as well as scary and rough winds and rough waves.
MAKING STORY

As a means of creating a more comfortable atmosphere, the host used stone, water, fire, and incense to convey the ideas he had in mind from the start. In the beginning, stones were used as an element to discover scenes in Jeju, as they were naturally connected to various materials that had been used in many people's lives. There are Jeju stones used to build boundaries or to place all over the garden and space so that you can feel the scene of Jeju at a place where you can see it. Additionally, stones were laid on the floor of the spa building, and the bathtub was also constructed of natural stone. In order to increase the warmth of the bathtub and sauna, the water is designed to bring the water indoors. In places where water is used, such as when washing their bodies or cooking, they employed materials that had not been used well to enhance the experience. Furthermore, it added variation to the space by allowing the shower space to be opened differently than before, or by creating a more cozy feeling when opening and closing the space. It was decided to install ethanol furnaces on shelves attached to the walls of the main building in order to express the fire boldly but safely while preserving the existing soil walls' texture. A fire indoors provides warmth and color, completing a quiet and cozy atmosphere. The red clay was also rubbed with hands after several attempts, resulting in a texture and color that revealed the temperature of the Anok. In order to leave you with a calming aftertaste, the scent selected a simple and rugged Grandhand Lumberjack scent. Anok is a scent that will preserve the traces of time. In contrast, the scent went beyond the scent itself. The sense of smell can be used in various ways by taking herbal baths infused with healthy energy, as well as filling the space with another scent while experiencing special tea coffee that you drink directly. Lastly, branches placed on the beach of Jeju were selected and used as objects of space. Anok's natural ingredients can be found anywhere on Jeju by carefully observing the inside and outside of the island.

The most challenging and interesting part of the project was restoring the old stone house's landscape. Following the first demolition, wooden structures and rafters on the verge of collapse were revealed. Although it was in poor condition, it was not completely demolished, but rather, it was dismantled one by one, reprocessed, and reassembled to preserve the structure. The doors of some existing windows and old houses were also blocked and sometimes saved or cut appropriately to create Anok openings. This created a relationship between space and the yard, and the gaze of the old days that those who lived on the old site of Anok would have looked at was linked to this moment in time.#
"The original ingredients, which are simple and rough, should be respected, and the texture and texture of Jeju should be captured. Let's create a warm, stone-walled space that captures the essence of Jeju."

From the moment he was commissioned and planned for Anok until the moment he completed everything, this was the sentence the designer pondered the most. The entire process of building and deploying content and objects occurred simultaneously with the construction of a cozy stone house that will provide shelter from cold winds and rough waves for a long period of time. Following a thorough discussion with the architect regarding sensory experiences, he attempted to arrange various sensory-based experiences that encompass not only vision but also touch and hearing. After careful consideration, he chose stones, water, fire, and incense and planned space and content accordingly.

In order to create a different flow between the outside and inside of the stone, the stone was first divided into two independent spaces by an old stone wall that has been in place for many years. Following this, the fire was positioned along the wall, combining comfort and stability with the old floor and red clay, while the water was replaced with the experience of indoor baths and saunas. The scent was reminiscent of Anok's coziness, which made it deeply reminiscent of memories, and furthermore, it is reminiscent of a scent that moves like coffee beans, imparting richness to the scent. Enjoy a peaceful and cozy rest without being disturbed by others. To allow you to fully appreciate the warmth and languor of the texture. For the purpose of being able to travel. As a result, Jeju's time and life are melted into a cozy rest.#
SPACE

The Perfect Level of Comfort and Warmth

As soon as you enter the building, there are several stairs that lead directly downward. Compared to walking or climbing straight, it is a more stable step. There is a calmness in my heart as if I am falling into a secret space that is unknown to anyone. A small and neat garden is also located under the stone wall surrounding Anok that seems to have moved Jeju's nature between two stone houses and a garden. As if growing out of reach of humans, Jeju's moss, silver grass, and plants have an exquisite appearance. A horizontally long garden is surrounded by two rooms, Main-dong and Spa-dong.

There are three main buildings: a bedroom, a dining area, and a sitting room. A wall adjacent to the sitting lounge is a warm and emotional wall that embraces the power of the ground and has been rubbed several times with the hands to maintain its original appearance. The ethanol brazier on the shelf is connected to the dirt wall, so you can sit on the floor of Gojae, and enjoy a time of contemplation in a sitting lounge with rafters. As well, when a large window is opened toward the garden and you exit, the old floor inside leads to the wooden porch, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. As a result, you can experience the scenery and smell of the garden as if it were indoors. Here is where the sensory experience begins. There is a subtle scent that touches the space, which is the Lumberjack scent of Grandhand, which combines the warmth of the fire with the touch of the palm, the scent of nature with the tip of the nose, and the warmth of the floor with the feet, enhancing the sense of coziness in the room. Multiple layers of comfort overlapping to form a feeling of coziness. With the dining table located between the bedroom and lounge space, up to four people can stay together and have back-to-back conversations. By creating a comfortable and unnecessary scene, Min-seok Ki, whose work is characterized by a simple, honest line, has created a wide and low chair.

There is a bathtub, a sauna, and a bedroom in the spa building. Natural stone bathtubs are large, wide, and deep, perfect for relaxing and having a cozy time with family and friends who travel together. The window facing the existing yard feels like a special frame. The texture is soft and refreshes the experience of water. Towels and robes from Somidang are made from pure cotton. An unusual space is also created by the sauna experience, which adds warmth to the warmth and emits a subtle scent of trees. Through the bathtub and bedroom window, you can also view Spa-dong's garden, restored stone walls, and the sky and seasons of Jeju. You may also stroll through the garden or rest in a small shaded area. You step onto the wooden floor with a comfortable texture and color when you enter a slightly higher bedroom. As opposed to the main building, which has a stable feeling due to its high ceilings, the bedroom of the spa building provides a feeling of openness. This is an ideal space for cooling down the body after it has been heated with warm water. In the garden, there is a window that allows you to see Jeju's time. Nature provides a sense of time and season.
INTERVIEW

Anok
The planning of Anok and the process of creating a cozy atmosphere intrigue me.
Z_Lab's CEO Joong-hyun Park:

When I named this place, I considered the choice of materials was crucial to enhancing the experience of the word "anokhada" (Jeju dialect of "comfortable"). Soil and stone were particularly important materials. It was my intention to convey the feeling of soil expressed on the wall of the main dong as well as the stone that forms the floor of the spa dong and the bathtub as fully as possible. In order to make it more comfortable, wood was used as a material.

The atmosphere of Main-dong may seem dark, but it is composed of a great deal of work and effort to convey the texture and color of the soil. I filled up the space one by one rather than creating a finished product from the beginning. In order to create the color of the soil wall, we rubbed the soil with our hands, the object was raised with branches collected from the Jeju beach, and the cozy atmosphere was completed by looking for various props at the Gojae table. Moreover, the light of the space is enhanced by the window fabric curtain produced by So Mi-dang's writer So-mi Ko, who travels between craft and design through Hanji Temple and So Chang.
Could you please tell me about your first encounter with Anok?
CEO Joong-hyun Park of Z_Lab:

On my first visit to Anok, I encountered a large number of cats. A total of five cats were found in traces where no one lived, and I assumed they might have something in common with Anok, which had been around for a very long time. In terms of relationships with people, this is a very special case. As a result of the images of various creatures and nature filling the space unintentionally during the process of building a house, the experience seems to be even more special. If you are not afraid of animals, I think it will be a valuable experience to get closer to the various creatures around you. Due to the fact that this is a remodeling project, I designed it while considering how to communicate the old memories contained within the space to new people, and I believe that the factors I mentioned earlier naturally facilitate this.
I would appreciate it if you could share any special experiences you have had with Anok.
CEO Joong-hyun Park of Z_Lab:

Anok possesses a cozy and tranquil atmosphere, with the characteristics of a sea village and the specialty that can only be experienced in a space with stones, fire, water, and aroma. This includes cats that I met by chance. As well, I hope that you will be able to experience drinking coffee while listening to music on an LP while turning on a warm stove on the quiet floor of an antique floor with elements that you have been thinking about from the beginning of your search.
Despite Anok's architectural and spatial characteristics, the space itself did not seem to be the main character. In order to create this experience and story, I focused on the materials which were close to me. This will allow you to experience things that are different from your daily routine. The importance of earth walls cannot be overstated. Jeju Island used to build walls out of the soil in the past, but today a variety of building materials are available, most of which are concrete based. As a matter of fact, it may not be much different from the recent construction of a red clay room in an old pension. It would be good to experience feeling and understanding the soil wall in Anok that we have designed using a modern interpretation process.
What are the geographical characteristics of the area?
CEO Joong-hyun Park of Z_Lab

You will be able to see many field walls if you follow the road. There are many field walls in this neighborhood. The road was named Jinsil-gil, which means that people who go to Jungsan village go to materialize. Additionally, it refers to a connection between the land and the sea. In contrast to the Olle Trail, which is made up of large stones, there is a field wall made up of very small stones around the field. Jatdam is the name of the dam at Gwideok-ri. They built a low, small, and hard stone wall, which they named Jatdam, to allow people to move between the walls, between the fields, and between the fields. The walls that naturally separated the zones and stories in this neighborhood were hoped to naturally lead to a sequence of events on the way to Anok. In the immediate vicinity of the airport, you will see a neighborhood with a very winding field, and if you follow the narrow road between the fields, you will find Anok.
There is something special about the furniture placed in Anok.
Z_Lab Space Designer Soo-jin Kim:

Years ago, I visited the shared studio of an acquaintance who was a woodworker and found a stool made by the writer Min-seok Ki. Even though it was a small piece of furniture, the stool was made with a sense of use and proportion. As I was designing Anok this time, I recalled Min-seok Ki's stool and contacted him for assistance.

Dining tables and chairs in the Anok dining area are designed slightly lower than we are used to seeing in our everyday lives. It is a piece of furniture of an unfamiliar height. Even after several wooden works, Min-seok Ki carefully expressed even the smallest details, such as the sense of use and proportion.

The lounge space also features the furniture of Seo Ki-yeol, who has worked with wood for 49 years. The assembled floors are provided with prefabricated seating chairs and small tables, which can be used comfortably on the floor or turned into small sofas when assembled and arranged on one side. This furniture was designed by me and made by writer Ki-yeol Seo.

Geumneung Emo

A solid and healthy breakfast such as Bomaljuk and abalone porridge, served by a friendly boss, is aptly named Geumneung Emo. In addition, Bomal Kalguksu, which can be ordered for two people, is highly recommended. Biyangdo Island can be seen from a restaurant.

Wolnyeongjakya

Wolnyeongjakya serves delicious sashimi every season without having to travel far. People who know about the restaurant often visit it because of its excellent cost-effectiveness. It is a place filled with beautiful sunsets. Wouldn't it be nice if you could sit down before sunset and enjoy your food with a drink and welcome the night?

Behind the Cafe

A cafe that frequently appears on Instagram due to its fairytale-like exterior window. Hand-brewed coffee is very delicious. A scene of the trip is complete when you take off your shoes and sit beside the window filled with stone walls and drink your own roasted coffee. Besides drip bags, you can also purchase time and space memory bags.

STAY

The Warmth of the Heart that Fills Up with Love

I often miss the beauty of nature. Anok allows people to experience various experiences without thinking about anything, with a comfortable rhythm and movement, regardless of where they are staying. Enjoy the romance that you had only imagined during your stay while being protected from any disturbance by being surrounded by the natural materials of Jeju Island. By walking and crossing your neck, you can feel the scent of water, stones, and fire on your skin. As well as plenty of space, a bathtub, and a sauna, there is a cozy garden to cool down in. In many ways, the world is expanding and becoming more and more unusual as it moves. You will remember Jeju, and you will remember Anok, Jeju, in that way. The stay in Anok, which can be held by nature, fills the heart with the warmth that can never be expressed. According to an old saying, a name is worth a thousand words. Coziness increases with the length of stay. Those who remain in the comfort of Anok are provided with sides and arms. Give them a warm and loving hug by opening your arms wide.

4 POINT OF VIEW

ORIGINALITY

Warmth fills in the side

No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to fill the empty side. It is meaningless to attempt to interpret who does what and how it is done. You need only follow multiple layers of experiences that are invisible but arranged neatly and kindly with multiple movements, low speed, and a slow rhythm. Keeping yourself protected by the warmth of the surrounding colors and resolutions is as simple as sitting on the floor, gazing at the night sky, facing the earth wall, and looking at the fire. That is all there is to it.

DESIGN

Dreams can be fulfilled in a place where there is water and fire

Water and fire can be enjoyed in an indoor space. Although I have dreamed of it, I have never achieved it. In the midst of the fire, which has been boldly drawing inside, time is shaken. In other words, it creates an illusion. The time has come for me to be protected in a cave just for me, not in Jeju Korea, or anywhere else. An excellent choice is the indoor Gojae Maru, which extends to the toenmaru and allows the boundary between external and internal experiences to be blurred. In most cases, it fulfills the fantasy of those who do not have outside space in their homes.

Hospitality

Inflates our sense of coziness

You cannot easily find warmth in your cold heart, no matter how many layers of blankets you cover. As the saying goes, "sincerity moves heaven". In order to warm the inner corner of Anok's mind, he builds and stacks several layers of the quilt. There is also warmth in the natural materials used, the internal and external experiences of heating and cooling the body, and the guest books that have been accumulated by those who have stayed. Spending time on it adds to the sublime and coziness of oneself and others.

PRICE

Get a taste of Jeju

This is a special place to experience Jeju as a whole. The elements of fire, water, scent, and stone. Anok's scent, reminiscent of a high stone wall and a mixed earth wall, is similar to a comfortable bathtub that is reminiscent of a haenyeo's fire (a place where people prepare themselves for entering the sea). It is through the space in which various materials are placed that you are able to experience the enclosed five senses in their entirety. There is a moment when space ceases to exist as space and is replaced by experience smoothly as if it were flowing water.
