In what part of the East Sea did you travel? Many people tend to think of the sea of Gangwon-do when they decide to leave for the East Sea. Even though I dream of a peaceful sea when I visit the East Sea, upon arrival, there are numerous people, crowds, and waves coming together to share the same experience. Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, formerly a boring school trip destination for people in their 30s and 40s, is now known as a roofless museum for newer generations and it has a sea view as well. Gyeongju is surrounded by the blue, clear, and warm East Sea.
It represents a more extensive image of a historic city, as well as a place with a special location suitable for relaxation. The sound of the waves can provide a pleasant and relaxing experience. The term Frux refers to waves that occur somewhere along the winding coastal roads which were formed by the volcanic activity of the columnar joint and Flux means fruition in Latin. There is a place called Fruxflux Hotel& Pool Villa where the two words blend harmoniously. When you arrive at this impressive place with exotic surroundings, you can see the sea from all rooms. You can also hear or see the waves that rush to the beach through a window of outstanding frames that depict nature in a living state. Take a moment to observe and listen. If you focus your eyes, ears, and mind on what is approaching, you may find that a place where you can enjoy rest and relaxation. It is the sea and the waves that call out to you and invite you to take the much-needed vacation you have been putting off.

The Hotel where You can Most Easily Relax
Hong-do Kim, the CEO of Ilkwang Lightings and several others who were first drawn to this area fell in love with the picturesque views surrounding Yangnam-myeon, including the buildings that overlook the sea. The decision was made to redesign the hotel according to the current needs of the modern era, taking advantage of its exotic shape which is reminiscent of a sailboat with terraced balconies. The project was named Geumbada after the existing building. Diverse individuals met to understand common issues and experts from each field decided to work together to create a new culture, and to design a hotel in which guests can relax while viewing the sea. Since the sound of waves could be heard generously into the building, the words Frux, which means wave or abundance and Flux, which means fruition or present, were combined (Fluxus is also the name for the anti-artistic movement Fluxus, which represents international change, movement, and flow of the 1960s and 1970s). The onomatopoeia of A tent fabric fluttering in the sea breeze has a similar sound to "FRUX FLUX", but it means "just now of abundance." This is now a modern hotel named Frux Flux. Above all, it contains a desire to turn into a hotel for rest and relaxation. My hope is that it will become a landmark in Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju-si, by establishing itself as a resting place, and not just an accommodation.

The Exotic East Sea Lies in the Middle of Gyeongju and Ulsan
Most people are surprised when they hear that there is a sea in Gyeongju. It is because Gyeongju has long been known for its relics such as Bulguksa Temple and Cheomseongdae, and tombs located throughout the city from a long time ago. When visiting the sea of Gyeongju, you can visit the beach of Pado Sorigil in Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, which feels like you have left for a small town in southern Italy due to its clear water and atmosphere of the East Sea. The Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa is located along the most beautiful 350 km of coastal road from Busan to Gangwon-do. It is located in the middle of Gyeongju and Ulsan and is easily accessible in both directions. The place faces the East Sea, where the sun rises the fastest. You can walk along the promenade alongside the silver grass colonies in autumn beyond the lobby on the first floor and the outdoor swimming pool. Every step you take to match the name of the wave sound path is accompanied by the sound of waves hitting the shore. This is a place where you can enjoy the feeling of relaxation while looking at the blue sea of the topography created by volcanic activity without having your view blocked.
The Columnar joint in Yangnam-myeon differs in size and form from the columnar joint in other regions and has been designated as Natural Monument No. 536. A magnificent view of the columnar joint can be seen from the Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa, which is located about 100 meters away. It is a 20-minute drive from Ulsan Airport and an hour drive from KTX Singyeongju Station, making it the most convenient location to relax with a quiet and blue sea in Gyeongju, different from any other East Sea, such as Gangneung, Yangyang, or Goseong. It is also possible to experience a different atmosphere depending on the season when unique experiences and attractions are located nearby, such as the tomb of King Munmu in Gyeongju, the three-story pagoda at Gameunsa Temple Site, Yangnam columnar joint, Guryongpo Port, and Gwanseong Pine Field Beach. From Ulsan to Homigot, this section has the most beautiful curves. Warm currents are formed by the influence of the ocean currents, so you can observe the climate that does not drop below zero, and even the trees of the warm spring that can be seen in Jeju.
MAKING STORY
Primary focus was placed on the stair-style balcony, which characterizes the exterior silhouette of the original building, and it was designed so as to contrast with the horizontal sea. By simplifying the wall and window forms and utilizing the concrete form as much as possible, we were able to erase the traces of the previous floor-by-floor use and kitsch Art Déco style characteristic of a 90s motel. The original layout was two directions (ocean view and road view) centered on a corridor, but both rooms were combined to create a single long room emphasizing ocean view and converting the road surface into a corridor. It was decided to reduce the number of rooms by half so that all guests could enjoy the sea view.
Low floor height extends the wall of the window as far as possible to provide visual openness, and the bed space is arranged in a box shape to allow the bed to look at the window to provide a contrasting view of the seascape. In addition, by planning and executing the depth of the window sill to 70cm, the space could be utilized in any way that the user desired. Yangnam-myeon's exotic scenery is quite similar to that of Jeju, so in order not to obstruct the beautiful sea views from the lobby on the first floor, we planted trees that are native to Jeju on a 7116 sq. ft parcel of land that had previously served as a parking space.
The original name of this building was Geumbada Motel and it was situated on the coastal highway between Ulsan and Gyeongju for about 30 years. Upon first appearance, this place appeared old and shabby as if it had been abandoned during those colorful days. Nevertheless, the scenery around the building is very impressive and the location is excellent, so I decided to create a new look appropriate for the modern era and the inhabitants after a complete renovation. Above all, the original shape of the building was quite unique. Considering that the building has a sailboat-like shape, it had the potential to become a landmark in the region by enhancing its appearance and story.
Buildings, whether commercial or non-commercial, are visible to a large number of people, so I wanted the building to make a striking impression. Therefore, we carefully considered the proportion, texture, and harmony of the building with its surroundings. The weather in this area is similar to that of Jeju, and as we exchanged opinions on how to fill the hotel with a gentle and gorgeous natural environment, I imagined a window. The Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa's keywords and concepts were intended to be incorporated into the window. Decision was made to incorporate the feeling of appreciating the landscapes of the East Sea captured in windows as a frame, making it appear as living art that changes with the weather and climate over time that is alive 24/7.
Director Tae-kyung Kim was responsible for the overall design of the building and was inspired by video artist Chang-min Lim and the cityscape of Manhattan, New York, ultimately resulting in the creation of living art that reflects nature. Based on the majority opinion that the sea should be treated as a modern art work, the sea was integrated into the space by considering the sequence of lying down on the bed and the movement from the entrance to the window, so that the sea would be the first impression for guests entering the room. This is a place where you can appreciate the work of living art according to the changes in the climate and weather.
SPACE
Immersing Yourself in a Sea that Changes Every Moment
The building has a unique staircase-shaped exterior. It resembles a floor of waves and a staircase-like columnar joint. The rooms of an impressive building that you encounter while traveling along the winding coastal road all face the sea. 365 days a year, the windows in the rooms act as living artwork and it is the color, light, and shape of the sea that changes from time to time. On the first floor, you will find an infinity pool with a depth of 0.8 meters adjacent to the lobby. While swimming, you can observe the East Sea and columnar joints that are designated as natural monuments at a glance. The lobby draws the scene of the sea into the inner space without disturbing it in any way, and serves as a breakfast area as well. In addition to Standard, Deluxe, and Suite types of rooms, we can accommodate a wide range of travelers from a minimum of one person to a maximum of 15 people (connecting Suite A and Suite B). An attractive frame hangs in the hallway of each floor, creating a distinctly sensual atmosphere.
Natural materials have been used to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere in the room. In contrast to other hotel rooms, Standard and Deluxe rooms provide very large spaces and a sense of openness. Even though the bathroom is designed with the same shape and design, each room offers a different living and bedroom space, so the variation is quite interesting. The Standard room is well equipped with all the amenities needed to provide an ideal space for a couple or an individual. In this way, you may fully experience the charm of the hotel without any difficulties. Guests of the Deluxe room will find plenty to enjoy, including a space where people can swim together in a group and a private pool. Suite room comes with a fully equipped kitchen and a gas barbecue, which you are able to use for a fee on the barbecue deck. On the terrace, you can prepare and share a delicious meal with those who stay together. The sound of the waves can be heard at night while enjoying the shimmering stars above. The suite room features a large and spacious window that allows you to enjoy the sea as if it were any other room. The rooms with barbecue decks have private pools and barbecue areas, and even rooms without terraces can enjoy barbecue on a rooftop that is always open to the public. While looking at the view from the rooftop, there is a safe photo zone where you can relax and gaze at the sky. Having all rooms facing the sea with ocean views is a significant advantage, which cannot be emphasized enough.

INTERVIEW
Interview of Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa

Frux Flux Hotel
Tell us what you thought was the most important aspect of planning the 'Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa'.
CEO Hong-do Kim of Ilkwang Lightings In what way will you realize the feeling of admiring and contemplating the sea? A major feature of our room is its length. The first thing we aimed for was a way to present the window in an appealing manner. The curtains are drawn when you open the door and enter. As well, it was double-installed with a blackout curtain outside and a very light curtain inside. As if you were presenting the stage, a window appears when you open up the curtains. The window will be dramatically revealed. As a way to make the window more like the frame of the artwork, it has a width that cannot be seen in regular windows.
The hotel is a place for relaxation. How would you define relaxation?
Hong-do Kim, CEO of Ilkwang Lightings/ "Meditation" or "lying on a comfortable bed" or "taking a bath" plays an important role in resting, so a Japanese hot spring known as Ryokan has been incorporated in the hotel. During the winter, guests may enjoy hot spring baths in the snow. Bathing itself is a form of relaxation. The rooms are equipped with hot water pools, so they can be enjoyed regardless of the season. In spite of the length of your stay, I have always endeavored to ensure that you have a restful evening and return to your normal life with a relaxed attitude.
Tell us what was important to you during the design process, and what has been added or removed.
Director Tae-kyung Kim of Cove/ The first impression of the exterior silhouette of the building was that it had a terraced balcony, so that was the focal point of the design, and the silhouette was designed in contrast with the horizontal sea. In order to maximize the use of the space, we have simplified the wall and window forms by removing traces of the previous floor usage and the kitsch Art Deco style of the motel. At first, the interior structure consisted of both directions (ocean view and road view) centered on the corridor, but both rooms were combined to create one long room emphasizing the ocean view while the road surface was used as a corridor. Therefore, I had to reduce the number of rooms by half. The low floor height was designed to induce a view of the emphasized sea scenery by tilting the wall and placing the bed area toward the window. Moreover, by creating a depth of approximately 70 cm for the window sill, we designed it to take into consideration the possibility of a variety of uses in this area for users.
It is my understanding that you have put a great deal of emphasis on lighting in order for the rest to be comfortable.
Director Tae-kyung Kim of Cove/ That is correct. Ilkwang Lightings was responsible for the lighting throughout the hotel. As it is a hotel intended for illumination and relaxation, I considered sunset and sunrise to be suitable colors for the hotel so that it could be comfortable and warm to stay in, so I devised lights composed of daylight bulbs, stands, and pendants that reflect these colors. The amount of light was adjusted to suit the location where the lighting should be situated in order to prevent the color temperature from exceeding 2200-3500K, which creates a sunset and sunrise atmosphere. Furthermore, we also considered reclamation when viewing the outside scenery through the window so that it would not interfere with guests' enjoyment.
What are the best ways to enjoy the Fruxflux Hotel& Pool Villa?
Hong-Do Kim, CEO of Ilkwang Lightings / The reason why this building has been chosen to be renovated is that the surrounding sea is surrounded by volcanic stones, giving the water a jade and indigo hue. While sipping coffee in the room bed, you can enjoy the view of the beautiful ocean. It would be a good idea to read a book you have been unable to read, enjoy food at nearby restaurants, and tour the Royal Tomb of King Munmu. If you have time, I would suggest a lot of time spent in your room.
Would you like to say anything?
Director Tae-kyung Kim / The 180cm x 180cm square window and the infinite view of the Yangnam Sea were designed with only basic elements in size and material, and they could not capture the impression as well as every moment of the hotel. In other words, I would like to inform you that the guests and managers currently residing at the Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa are the ones who make this place what it is.

Coffee Myungga
The cafe is located on the first floor of the hotel and was introduced in Daegu in 1990. It is the Yangnam branch of a Coffee Master that serves delicious coffee. Known as the first generation of Korean specialty coffee shops, it offers a wide variety of bakeries and delicious coffee.
STAY
Just in a Relaxed and Peaceful Manner
While dreaming of a break far from home, I imagine a stroll along the seashore where I may enjoy a leisurely stroll. Rest becomes a normal part of everyday life for most people. Now, more than ever, the quality of rest you desire is determined by where you stay. Three sides of Korea are surrounded by water. Despite the fact that the West Sea, East Sea, and South Sea all have their own distinct characteristics, one tends to think of the East Sea first when contemplating the sea as a place for relaxation. The "Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa," where you can experience a Jeju-like landscape from the East Sea, and enjoy the wonder of the sea with columnar joints right in front of you, is a gem for those seeking a break.
One can spend all day just sitting by the large, deep window in the room and gazing at the sea. You will be able to listen to the waves and enjoy a bath during your stay, or you can play in the water in the sensuous Infinity Pool that resembles the sea. A place that exists only for rest. Each room faces the sea, which reduces the time spent selecting rooms. A beautiful sea, which emanates from a neatly arranged room with warm colours and natural materials, calms your mind. Throughout your stay, you feel comfortable and peaceful. Waves do not allow you to think about the busyness and fast pace of your daily life. The mind becomes tranquilized like the sea. There is only a moment of perfect rest remaining, in which only the world and oneself can exist.
3:00 PM
The East Sea Makes a Special Appearance
The winding road that parallels the coastline that resembles Southern Italy takes me to a different landscape than that which I was accustomed to along the East Sea. The warm and gentle sea makes you wonder whether it is on Jeju Island. The first thing you see when entering your room is a large, deep window that overlooks the sea. Two layers of curtains are pulled back to reveal the sea view that appears dramatically.
6:30 pm
Take a Moment to Relax
As the sun set, I climbed up to the roof of the building, a common area, and admired the various colors of the sky. The sight of the open sea can ease tensions throughout the body and disguise lingering thoughts. As I return to the room, I take out a book from the bag and sit under the subtle lighting. The sun has set and disappeared, but the light in the room resembling a sunset continues to awe.
10:00 pm
Taking in the Feeling of the Waves
The extraordinary water, the groundwater of Yangnam-myeon flowing from its faucet, and the water itself feels very soft. The terrace Jacuzzi is filled with warm water. My body is enveloped in soft water as I soak myself in warm water. The open terrace without windows allows me to feel the waves close by. As I listen to the waves, I forget the little things that made my heart feel stuffy. I appreciate the crisp night air that brushes against my nose.
9:00 am
From Your Window, You See the Sea as if It were a Work of Art
I remember when someone asked me what I intended to do at that moment when I was resting, I replied, "I absolutely do not intend to do anything." After breakfast in the first-floor lobby, I returned to my room and gazed at the ocean across the Infinity Pool. With a drip bag on the table, I made a cup of warm coffee. Regardless of where I sit, I can view the window from anywhere within the bedroom.
11:00 am
With the Illusion of Being Far Away
Although I have traveled to the East Sea, I feel that I have travelled a long way. I had a memorable time. It was a relaxing break that felt far from my daily routine. After relaxing my mind and body to the sound of the waves in my heart, I return to my life with a firm step, knowing I will always be welcomed by the sea and waves.
4 POINT OF VIEW
ORIGINALITY
A Place Where one can Take a Few Moments to Rest
As its name suggests, this is a place that combines waves and talents. This place has the ability to inspire you to continue to look at the sea. This place is free from artificial motion or intent. Only a trace of thought is present about how to fully enjoy nature and the panoramic view. Here you can relax, enjoy the scenery, and listen to the sound of nature. You have found the rest for which you have been searching for so long.
DESIGN
A Window that Attracts the Eyes
The window you keep looking through has been designed to capture the sea that changes seasonally. The experience is as if you are sitting on a deep window, with the sea right beside you. Byung-guk Jeon's 1993 work depicts Yangnam Beach in the area, and it is placed in the corridors and rooms on each floor, as well as the open terrace and jacuzzi. This adds exotic impression to the hotel. A lighting system that simulates the sunrise and sunset contributes to a cozy stay.
Hospitality
A Place Where only those Who Remain with the Sea Live
A sea where you can rest close to nature is what everyone desires. Ideally, they wish to be somewhere exotic and isolating, and those who stay at the Fruxflux Hotel & Pool Villa can be close to the sea. When you are facing the sea that changes every moment, you can use your leisure time for nothing but rest. You do not have time to think about unimportant things. Depending on the time and the weather, I wait for the sea to gaze at me. Only those who remain near the sea may exist.
PRICE
The Quiet Time of the East Sea
Spend some time in the East Sea, an exotic and warm sea of scenery that is quieter than any other area of the East Sea. Nearby attractions and restaurants can be reached on foot if you wish. All rooms offer a view of the sea, so you can spend as much time as you like looking at it. Driving along the coast is a pleasant experience. You will be able to rest abundantly and sufficiently from the moment you arrive simply by walking on the sea, waves, and coastal roads without planning ahead of time.
