Remembering the Golden Days of the Past and Present

Eternity does not exist. The moment you exhale, it becomes the past. In cinematic or visual grammar, we often select a language that represents the past in black and white, which signifies a period in which, somewhere in the moment of staying at that time, that moment has faded, but is vaguely remembered. Enjoying the present cannot last forever, and one lives the present over the past in that manner. My destination is unknown at this point. Yet, we encountered a place where we stopped for a time to remember the bright days of our youth and the present, causing us to take note of where we were and what we were doing at the time. The original city center of Busan, which has been overlooked over time, is a space that catches the eye with the most Busan-like charm while on the road changing from the past to the present. The meaning of remembering the past, It's the good old days, Goodoldays Hotel.

Past, present, and future. The passage of time never ceases. When we become the past, the present, and the future, what should we remember and what should be forgotten? There is a place in which you can stay in the present that can become the past in a blink of an eye, or even more, and reach out your hand not to forget the present and the present. Let us hold hands. Consequently, we live by time and by time, and we all realize that we must be present at the present.

For a Trip You will Never Forget

The two people are Si-hyun Noh, a Korean who runs a Goodoldays hotel and a cafe, and Jennifer, a Taiwanese woman. Si-hyun Noh operated a guest house and cafe for nearly nine years before opening Goodoldays, and he has tried to create his own masterpiece using his experience.

The abbreviation Goodoldays refers to the Good Old Days. As the host was worried about COVID-19 during the hotel preparation period, he read many books and came to the conclusion that he should focus on the present without regretting the past or worrying about what did not occur. All the moments that have become the past will become Goodoldays if you focus on the present. In order for future generations to be reminded of today, which they will miss one day, Hotel Goodoldays will be recording the trip with the hope that it will be a trip that will preserve the memory of today. It is located in Jungang-dong, the busiest district of Busan, and reminding the good old days.

Change at Its Center

Jungang-dong, in Busan, had a busy city hall in the past, so there are many old stores, but today, new buildings are being constructed everywhere, making it a hub of change. From Busan Station, you will reach Jungang Station and Nampo Station by taking the subway. Upon leaving Jungang-dong Subway Station Exit 2 and walking toward Nampo-dong, you gradually experience a change of scenery as you walk from small and old buildings to large and colorful ones. The district of Jungang-dong lies at the intersection of the past and the present. Located between Busan Station, the first gateway to Busan, and Nampo-dong, the area is often crowded with tourists as they seek romance in Busan on weekends, and at the same time, it is full of busy and lively walks of people from all walks of life. Goodoldays is the best place to view Busan's old appearance and present, as many of the city's tourist attractions are easy to reach, such as Nampo-dong and Jagalchi Market, the International Market, Bupyeong Night Market, Yongdusan Park, and the 40 Stairs. Furthermore, Gamcheon Culture Village, White Yeoul Culture Village in Yeongdo, and Ulsukdo Island in Dadaepo, which is a short distance from Taejongdae, are located in the heart of Seobusan tourism, and they are easily accessible.

MAKING STORY

During the process of making the exterior wall, wood tones were incorporated inside the clay bricks so that the opinions of the tenant and the architect's office, which desired a warm and friendly impression of the space, could be naturally infused into the surroundings of the old buildings of Jungang-dong. The grid pattern with the brick finish is similar to a universal elevation design, however, windows are positioned on both corners of the building to increase the space between the inside and the outside, and the roof parapets are pushed to loosen the connection between the building and the sky. A large window was provided, leaving the wall as high as a chair from the floor for maximum stability, and the light bulb-colored lighting enabled the hotel's analog sensibility and warmth to shine obliquely towards the late-night street.

Located on the second floor, the cafe is designed as a space with ambiguous boundaries that can be used both by travelers and cafe guests. A low threshold and high intimacy were achieved by pushing the first-floor window in about two bricks and creating an area where you can sit and rest by placing wood on top of it. It is an open but concealed space in which anyone who travels to and from Jungang-dong can rest for a while, regardless of whether they use a cafe or a hotel. The rooftop is an open space that is available for everyone who uses the building but has been enclosed by walls to reduce the spread of noise while remaining less visible from the surrounding buildings. While supervision of the frame construction was taking place on the roof, Yongdusan Park and the Bukhangdaegyo Bridge could be seen from the top, and some of them were additionally altered so that they had a pretty nice view.#
A full note was handed over to the architect's office, MOC Architects. The host's experiences in life were written in the form of a report, which he delivered to the architect's office together with collected data. This was a result of my desire to communicate clearly what kind of person the hotel was looking for, what kind of experience he had, and what he intended to do. Additionally, after reading all of the data related to MOC Architects, I commissioned them and proceeded flexibly based on complete trust.

It was the goal of Goodoldays to bring together the experience of analog sensibility, the history of Jungang-dong, and the value of the memories buried there in order to reveal them in the architecture and space. Furthermore, the government decided to gradually turn its attention to domestic travelers by planning hostels for overseas travelers that had been planned as a result of COVID-19 variables, reducing the number of rooms and increasing the size in order to cater to domestic travelers with more than two people. Therefore, MOC Architects integrated the exterior and interior of the building to create a place that will protect one of the oldest parts of Jungang-dong for the foreseeable future. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, it attempted to connect to Jungang-dong. As well as enhancing intimacy with hotel users, cafe users, and, more broadly, people who travel from and to Jungang-dong, the architectural concept continues to focus on the content of time and records in more detail. Consequently, small spaces outside naturally connected those who were on different paths at the same time. Also, the exterior wall was pushed slightly in order to preserve the view from the rooftop that was raised during construction.#
SPACE

Recording the memories and emotions of the journey

The hotel's rooms are located on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors and are categorized as rooms 01, 02, and 3. Each room has a stationery drawer, and curated stationery, such as Goodoldays goods and pencils, is displayed. With a wide and long desk and a comfortable chair, you can naturally read and write while thinking about the memories and feelings of your journey.

Each of the rooms 01 and 03 contains a shower room and a bedroom, a toilet, and a bathtub, and you will be able to relieve the fatigue of your journey with a bath balm prepared in collaboration with a local workshop. Also, it has a large window inside, which lends it an excellent sense of openness. Room 02, which is composed of a bedroom, a bathroom, and a shower, there is enough room for a relatively compact room or bed in the middle of the room. In order to create a warm atmosphere, wood tones and green colors were used throughout the room. The refrigerator and shelves in all rooms contain a variety of drinks, snacks, and cup noodles that may be used at no additional charge. It is impressive to see that a variety of contents can experience analog and local culture, not only for the interior elements or photographs that are pleasing to the human eye. With Mark Coffee beans, a collaborative brand, you can make a delicious cup of coffee by following the best recipe. With a turntable, you can add warmth to the music, making the space in which you stay even more appealing. The host has selected jazz and pop vinyl according to his personal preferences. Everything that fills the space can be enjoyed along with comfort and analog sensibilities. The power to focus on the present moment is a common characteristic that can only be obtained through patience. Upon focusing on the present, you will be able to perceive the host's intention, thoughts, and nature of the hotel in a warm and kindly manner, as all of the moments that have become past will be remembered as good old days.

It is important to note that the first-floor cafe is not an ordinary small cafe attached to the hotel, but a unique space with an independent character of its own. With the help of the spatial permission that extends to the second floor, you can observe the season and travel time while enjoying delicious coffee and desserts. On the second floor of the cafe, there are low-slung seats that resemble a hotel lounge, thus providing a large and comfortable space for writing postcards, which are the main topic of the cafe and hotel. It creates a synergy effect in which people who have had a good experience at a café may be interested in similar hotels of similar resolution. The rooftop is a space that can be used by both hotel guests and cafe patrons, and even though it is a building forest in the middle of the city surrounded by walls, it still feels comfortable since it is less exposed to surrounding buildings and noise does not spread. You can view Yongdusan Park and the straight Busan Tower in the future, and the Busan Port Bridge in the back, and if you step outside of the slightly pushed wall, you can see the long ginkgo tree road that runs from left to right and this road that runs across Jungang-dong. Depending on the changing scenery of day and night, it contains completely different emotions and stories as the season changes.
INTERVIEW

stayfolio
Goodoldays Hotel
Please introduce yourself.
We are Si-hyun Noh, a Korean who runs a Goodoldays hotel and a café, and Jennifer, a Taiwanese woman. Our experience in operating guest houses and cafes for nearly nine years informed the planning of Goodoldays. Goodoldays is short for Good Old Days. While recalling the good old days, I chose the name of the hotel as a friendly expression.

The Goodoldays includes all the things you learned and were inspired by as you prepared the hotel. During that time I was worried about COVID-19, and I decided to focus on the present rather than regret the past as I read many books. We thought that all of the moments that became the past were good old days if we focused on the present.

Someday, you will miss the day you are experiencing today. Goodoldays embodies the meaning of disappearing time in space and enables us to keep today forever, which will soon fade into the past. I am hoping to record my trip today, and I have booked a hotel in order to record it. Due to its position in Jungang-dong, the busiest part of Busan, it has a strong connection to the good old days, and the local significance is in keeping with that.
I would like to know more about the concept that focuses on time and records.
Postcards, analog, the entire concept of the hotel, and the Jungang-dong story may seem unfamiliar to tourists. Although it was necessary to connect them, we discovered that they are all connected by time.

With the Goodoldays postcard, you are able to send a postcard written today to any month in the future. It is very similar to sending a present into the future, and even if you receive a postcard from the future, it comes from the past, not the present. Analog is also essential. Contrary to digital, where you can play a song by simply touching the play button, the turntable in the room must first upload the LP record before playing it. A hand drip coffee machine works similarly. To prepare coffee, you must grind the beans by hand, pass them through a filter, and wait a long time. An analog experience cannot exist without time.

In the past, Jungang-dong was the site of a bustling city hall, so there were many old stores, and new buildings are being constructed everywhere. When you walk from Exit 2 of Jungang-dong Subway Station to Nampo-dong, the small and old building disappears, and the scenery changes. As a result, I considered Jungang-dong to be somewhere between the past and the present.

The word "record" comes from a postcard in which the writer expresses a hope that the experience of Busan will endure beyond just a postcard. In the short term, memories are easily lost, but written material is preserved for 10 to 20 years, and it never disappears if it is not discarded or erased. The brand story includes the hope that the moment of staying in Busan is preserved as a memory that will not fade away.
Throughout the hotel, collaboration with local companies is evident.
Most of the content that fills the room is local in nature. The book curated by Jungang-dong Jubaek Corporation, coffee beans suggested by Jungang-dong Mark Coffee, tea leaves recommended by Jungang-dong Good Tea, oolong tea recommended by Sagyechun, as well as diffusers, bath bombs, beer, and cheese cubes, were all created in collaboration with brands based in Busan. Our dream is to create a virtuous cycle in which guests who have experienced local products in their rooms will visit and consume them, and develop through co-prosperity with local brands.

Moreover, there are many old people who remained in Jungang-dong during the 1940s and 1950s, and the place contains a deep story that has been shaped through the years. It is unfortunate that the quality of taste guaranteed over the years was so undervalued and misunderstood. In order to make an introduction card, I visited the shop owners in person, took pictures, and interviewed them. There is a display stand at the hotel reception that can be carried by both hotel guests and cafe patrons. It is my belief that experiencing the experience and taste of the old shop, which is an important reason for its existence, will enhance the charm of Jungang-dong and help to make your trip to Busan more memorable. Ideally, not only delicious foods but also stores with stories can be gathered together to lead the revival of Jungang-dong, and also meet the needs of travelers who wish to experience local culture.
I would like to know more about the welcome gift and breakfast.
In addition to a Busan landscape photo postcard, envelope, stamp, ballpoint pen, memo paper, and Busan map, the host personally presents guests with a welcome gift. When you return to your daily routine, the emotion associated with the travel destination diminishes quickly. The gift we are giving you today is the ability to write a postcard in order to preserve and cherish the time that is slipping away. If you record my appearance and thoughts about the trip today and deliver it to the reception, I can send it by indicating a date up to three years in the future. Make meaningful memories beyond time by sending a postcard to your future self or to your friends and lovers' families.

During the COVID-19 era, I considered that breakfast baskets were the ideal type of breakfast since they were delivered to the front of the room and could be eaten at leisure. In the morning, the bakery team prepared hot scones with homemade granola, half-boiled eggs, orange juice, and seasonal fruits. It is recommended to serve scones with warm coffee from a hand drip, and granola with milk or almond breeze in the refrigerator. You can also purchase the same product in the cafe as you can in the store.
How would you like to spend a day as a guest at Goodoldays, not as a host?
Before the opening, I stayed for a day to determine whether there was anything lacking. I would like to experience a period of complete relaxation and rest that I have never experienced before. Take a stroll on Jungang-dong Street with the Americano you received with the coupon. We will have dinner at an old restaurant in Jungang-dong that was recommended by Good All Days. Come into the room, put on your preferred Supjan Stevens' LP, and read the curated book "Pung Dung" by Jabaek Corporation. Using the postcard provided as a welcome gift, I am sending it a year later in order to record my appearance and my impressions of the trip. I would like to be able to enjoy all the contents of the room to the fullest extent.

During your stay at Goodoldays, we hope you will gain or experience something positive. There is no television in the room, so people who do not know will be surprised. However, you can fill your time by putting up a plate while listening to an LP, grinding coffee beans while drinking coffee, and sharpening pencils while writing letters. I would like you to try writing a postcard to the future first. As you put the postcard in the drawer, this will be a meaningful and enduring memory for you, as well as a medium that will serve to remind you of the good times in Busan and the feelings of that period in your life.
I would like to know what your future plans are.
Si-hyun Noh, a Korean man_ I'm preparing to welcome overseas visitors who will enter the country soon. Not only can you experience many different contents, but you can also create a story, not only a sleeping space. Currently, these stories are only available in Korean, so we are preparing English, Chinese, and Japanese versions, and we are considering how to make it easier to deliver to Goodoldays, Jungang-dong, and even Busan.

Jennifer, a Taiwanese woman_ Now that everyone has cell phones and smartphones, she takes a photo and tries to recall a memory. However, the picture is on the computer, so she is unlikely to be looking at it. Nevertheless, if you have a postcard, you can put it in the drawer, and when you take it out one day, you will be able to read the memories and feelings associated with that particular moment. These are all good memories. Postcards are among the best souvenirs. I would like to share many meaningful experiences with you. Please remember to send yourself a postcard to friends and family. Thank you.

Local Restaurant

Jung-ang Sikdang

A restaurant that has been in operation for over 50 years is located in an alley where the sign cannot be seen. With a price of only 20,000 won, the number of side dishes available on the sashimi baekban is surprisingly large, and each taste is alive.

Seongiljip

This is one of the best eel restaurants in Korea, where you can enjoy salt-grilled and seasoned grilled eels. This is a rare quality eel that minimizes the seasoning and allows you to taste the original ingredients. After eating grilled eel, do not forget the fried rice that is stir-fried with the remaining seasonings and vegetables.

Local Cafe

Goodoldays Cafe

Here is the warmest and most delightful way to celebrate today. There is a high level of quality in coffee shops, bakeries, and spaces with an analog sensibility. From the Good Spanner, Good Shake, and Good Vienna menus, you will be able to sample sweet baked cookies and cakes.

STAY

In order to move forward, we must step forward right now

The connections between the past, present, and future can make moments and time last for a lifetime. In order to move forward, we must fully enjoy and feel the present, which will eventually become the past. What is that power? A city is a place where you can write your emotions and memories while listening to music that keeps the temperature up by erecting a board without a television while rejecting the linearity of time. You have the opportunity to do anything and keep it. Having the opportunity to recollect the present, which lies somewhere between the past and the present, as a "good old day," strengthens the present, and prepares for the future. If you are sitting in a hotel room or a low-seat cafe with ample stimuli and accumulated history, pick up a free welcome gift, select your favorite pen from a stationery drawer, and write it down on a postcard provided by the host. Travel memories that can last forever, gaining the inner power to promise to return again. Recording provided me with the opportunity to be isolated inside myself without being detached from my daily life.

4 POINT OF VIEW

ORIGINALITY

The Nature of Travel Through Records

Would it not be the essence of travel to make people see their daily lives differently and to permit them to fit new eyes and minds by changing the geography, the location, the angle, and the height of their stay? There is a primitive way to enjoy the present moment without disconnection from daily life or isolation from nature. The past, present, and future, which were cut off during a stay that caused me to hold a pen and consider what to write, are all intertwined. In short, it is an experience that makes you fully realize that you are living in the context of time and space. There is nothing left to gain or to lose.

DESIGN

Stranger's Feelings were Erased by a Connection

The classification of rooms that are larger than those found in most hotels is based on whether a bathtub is available or not. It features a minimalist design with a long desk and a spacious bed, which meets with the outside through a window to eliminate the stuffy feeling. Moreover, the impression of local people who encounter in the cafe and reception space on the first floor erases the feelings of strangers through natural connections to the region, and from the rooftop, you will be able to see the changing seasons and the life of Busan at the same time. The natural collapse of the boundary between the neighborhood and the local owners and guests has passed, but it continues to bring out the comfortable and essential feelings of travel.

Hospitality

Concentration on the Present

It is the power of recording and the arrangement of time that allows you to focus on the moment at hand. In analog settings, waiting, patience, and small accomplishments can be gained, and when you write, you confront the past. People in modern society seem to have an attitude of focusing on the present, and this is something that is easily overlooked, and it is not properly installed even though it is a necessary and sufficient condition for people in this era. Now is the time to accept it. It makes me reflect upon what is important and when to stay.

PRICE

Making the Most of One's Time

The experience in Good All Days, the memory, is a memory that requires time in order to gain time. This is due to the experience of the record, which has allowed us to walk side by side with time. Busan's time was not spent isolated from the world, but also not far from the past and the present. It would be nice to return here again in the near future to see the faces and impressions that have changed from season to season. It would be nice to have time again. Not to be forgotten.
