Cities are often symbolized by shades of gray. Buildings tightly clustered, the emissions of numerous vehicles, people in monochrome attire devoid of expression. The prevailing mental image of a city is one of chilliness and sharpness. When I contemplate the urban landscape, I perceive that even humans struggle to align with the city's criteria, much like the limited presence of plants and animals within its confines. Pressure to prioritize high productivity and rapidity can evoke frustration in anyone. Opting out of the environment that demands a swift pace, one could find solace in a place where strolling leisurely is acceptable and a novel way of existence can be envisioned.
Grove Dongsan emerges as a sanctuary for those navigating the city with bated breath. In a quiet fishing village, nestled unobtrusively atop a small hill, it resides. From this vantage point, one can behold the sinuous sea, the cascading stars, and the swaying grass. The surrounding nature doesn't impel hurriedness, even if your hours pass languidly. It's simply a matter of surrendering oneself to the moment. Profound relaxation, the materialization of inspiration, novel encounters—these become the essence of Grove Dongsan, just as the purpose of the journey transforms.
Whenever the urge to disappear takes hold, one can gaze upon the benevolence of Grove Dongsan—a place one yearns to explore.

A Symphony Orchestrated by a Nature-Devoted Couple
Grove Dongsan came to fruition through the passion for the sea and camping shared by Park Eun-joo and Lee Joo-heon. Partners not only in life but also in their architectural firm, EJH Architects, their mutual reverence for nature is palpable—they embark on camping escapades every weekend. Frequent visits to the camping site facing Dongsan Beach led them to develop a profound attachment to Dongsan-ri. Inevitably, they envisioned this locale as more than just a fleeting destination, instead as a place to spend their golden years.
The Dongsan-ri they encountered exuded a serene, rural ambience that held great promise for a nature-oriented upbringing for children. Hence, it was a logical progression to conceptualize a petite garden within Dongsan-ri—a modest abode for a select few. Their aspiration was to craft a space that seamlessly melded with the village on a small scale. A space mindful of structural integrity and aesthetic elegance, designed to coexist harmoniously with nature, rather than overshadow it like more imposing edifices. Walls, instead of towering high, are left unobtrusively open, fostering a sense of boundless unity.
Grove Dongsan gazes fondly upon the village. Drawing inspiration from the heartwarming experiences the couple shared in Dongsan-ri, it serves as a haven where many yearn to escape the bustle of city life and embrace the tranquility of nature. The modest Lodge, while unassuming in its construction, mirrors the couple's daily preferences. They envisaged that a respite could take on fresh significance—a distinctive encounter imbued by the spatial arrangement born from their personal tastes—for those fortunate enough to sojourn within.

An Unpretentious Coastal Village Ambiance
Dongsan-ri exudes an air of tranquility as a serene fishing village. In stark contrast to the bustling Jukdo Island, frequented by surfers and tourists daily, Dongsan-ri remains hushed and serene due to the absence of imposing hotels, guesthouses, and upscale seafood eateries. The waves at Dongsan Beach are relatively gentle, rendering it an ideal spot for novice surfers to learn the art. The village's architecture mirrors the sea's modesty and ambiance, comprised of unassuming, low-set houses that form a cohesive community.
Ascend the village's hillside, glimpsing the vibrant array of rooftops, and you'll come upon Grove Dongsan. Interestingly, the spot where Grove Dongsan now resides holds profound significance for the villagers. This locale once served as a playground for the village's children owing to its gentle slopes, and the distant presence of a small pine forest remains a symbolically cherished memory. The couple behind Grove Dongsan opted not to obscure or diminish the site's significance with their structures. Instead, they accentuated the site's charm while preserving the neighborhood's ambiance. Walkways were thoughtfully integrated between the buildings, affording views of the forest from the village, which is also a noteworthy advantage for the guests. This design facilitates a connection with nature on a grander scale, enhancing the experience beyond the confines of the living spaces.
Survey the village with the forest nestled behind, and you'll be greeted by rows of amiable rural residences along the alleys, all against the backdrop of the distant sea. This tableau, replete with its array of colors and distinctive character, surpasses even the panoramic ocean view that extends towards the horizon.
MAKING STORY
Grove Dongsan comprises The Venti, spanning 20㎡, and The Trenta, boasting 30㎡. Minimalism serves as a defining principle that permeates the entire space, dictating a floor area constraint from the outset of the design. Despite the modest floor area, ample floor height was allocated to engender a three-dimensional, snug environment. The choice of a two-story configuration, including an attic, capitalizes on this heightened ceiling, a decision that may seem inefficient for residential spaces but is ideal for delivering a distinctive experience. Upon entering, a cave-like ambiance emerges, blurring the demarcation between floor, wall, and ceiling.
Materials are unified through concrete, yet diverse processing methods evoke the perception of distinct textures. This approach extends to the sparse utilization of extraneous furnishings and decor, the focus being on a stripped-down layout that nurtures a sense of unburdened presence. Rather than a television, a fixed window frames the expanse of nature beyond, with natural light suffusing the space in place of vibrant illumination. This approach minimizes artificial elements that divert attention, fostering solitary contemplation or shared focus, as the case may be.
The couple aimed to share the solace of nature they had savored with a wider audience. They suggested immersing oneself in individual contemplations and sensations within a space where time seemed suspended—a realm for releasing intricate plans and worries and embracing leisure. They championed the "Aesthetics of Simplicity" to focus on the core. Grove Dongsan embraced muted hues, shunned ornamental details, and sidestepped intricate layouts. Its design aimed to simplify the stay, adhering to minimalist principles. Though modestly constructed, it was planned to draw the sea and forest elements into the space, in harmony with the initial concept of "comfort in nature." This philosophy manifested in the visual, with Grove Dongsan comprising two Lodges exuding tranquility. Facing each other from a slight remove, the intention was to invite the gentle whispers of waves into Grove Dongsan’s interior through the pathways, amidst the backdrop of the expansive pine forest. Despite its beachside locale, the slightly distant positioning from the sea deepened the sensory engagement.
Amidst rolling waves, enjoying a Fire Fit brought about a symphony of sounds—the crackling of firewood, rhythmic waves, and birds' melodies blending. Essentially, the experience at Grove Dongsan was enriched by natural layers rather than contrived artifice. Rather than contrasting with the modest fishing village, the architecture harmonized organically, utilizing minimal space for essential elements. Its purpose wasn't to flaunt itself, but to quietly meld into the environment, revealing its presence in a subtle manner.
SPACE
A Tranquil Day in Sync with Nature's Pace
Ascending the alley in Dongsan-ri Village, your eyes will alight on two pristine plots nestled amid the verdant grass. Behind, a tapestry of dense trees frames a delicately tiered landscape that unfurls between the structures. As you traverse the driveway, the outer expanse, delineated by low fences, offers undulating hills of varying heights. The lush grass, stirred by the breeze, dances visually and aurally, while the vibrant hues of purple willow mafilcho and slender Liatris infuse the garden with splashes of color.
Venturing indoors, where the rustling texture of the lawn embraces your steps, you'll encounter the entrance to The Venti. With the front window serving as an entryway, the distinction between interior and exterior blurs seamlessly. Throw the window wide open, and a symphony of fresh leafy scents, avian calls, and warm sunlight spills into the space. An analog charm is kindled by an LP player off to the side, offering an alternative resonance. Seating oneself on a cushion before the fixed window that gazes upon the forest, contemplation finds a companion. Ascend the ladder to the mid-level and a bedroom with attic-like character reveals itself. Beneath the sloping gable roof, you can unwind in the presence of gently filtered light streaming through a diminutive window.
The Trenta, featuring steps, welcomes sunlight and a distant sea view. Its elongated, horizontal form echoes that of The Venti, while an Irish table links to the outer deck when the front windows are flung open, crafting a splendid dining encounter. On sun-drenched days, recline upon a sunbed and bask in nature's ambiance. This design also affords a closer perspective of the forest than its counterpart, The Venti.
Lastly, there's the FireFit—an apex of the experiences that Grove Dongsan offers. As darkness envelops, the fire stove comes to life, accompanied by the starry cascade from the site's modest hillock. In the presence of the gently crackling flames, you'll discover a sanctuary of deep repose—a journey forged through a succession of moments, leading to profound relaxation.

Grove Dongsan
It's akin to a scene from the lyrics of "With My Love," a picturesque abode on a verdant meadow. Initially, what vision guided the design of this dwelling?
Our affinity for the sea led us to frequent the East Sea, a weekly ritual that nurtured our connection with the waves. Serendipity introduced us to a modest garden nestled in a tranquil rural fishing village. Here, the distant symphony of waves, glistening foliage in the embrace of sunlight, and the nightly cascade of stars from the heavens create an enchanting symphony. The notion of carving out a minute haven for oneself or two emerged—a space of minimum proportions, where one can absorb, hear, and intimately experience nature, escaping the whirlwind pace and confinement of urban life. This minimalistic sanctuary was envisioned to offer respite, a reprieve from the clamor of our rapid lives. We aspired to extend this respite to those weary of the complexities of their bustling daily routines—offering a sanctuary where they can unburden themselves with ease. The lodestar of our endeavor was a modest Lodge—a testament to our yearning for simplicity and comfort. Its embodiment? A picturesque dwelling amid a lush meadow, its very form naturally intertwined with the fabric of the petite fishing village. The aim was harmony, allowing the architecture to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.
I'm intrigued by the significance behind the name "Grove Dongsan."
As the concept of Grove Dongsan began taking shape, fate led me to converse with an individual who had relished their childhood days in Dongsan-ri. In their recollection, this very locale once served as a cherished playground for the local children, marked by gentle hillocks. This memory struck a chord within me, igniting the idea of translating this sentiment into the language of architecture. Hence, the appellation "Grove Dongsan" emerged, encapsulating a nod to another "Dongsan" nestled within a sylvan nook of the petite village of Dongsan-ri.
Upon unveiling the front window, the expanse of the living room seamlessly unfolds. What sort of experiential journey do you envision?
With the confines of our floor area, our goal was to conjure a sense of three-dimensional expansiveness. We achieved this by setting the ceiling height to lofty levels and extending the connection to the external environment. Guided by this principle, we crafted an intimate bedroom that exudes the charm of an attic space, capitalizing on the elevated ceiling height. Moreover, we ingeniously expanded the interior realm onto the outer deck, fostering an environment that readily engages with the interplay of light, breeze, and sound—a harmonious tableau of nature's offerings.
What was your foremost intent during the construction phase?
Throughout the construction journey, my aim was to embrace simplicity by minimizing superfluous embellishments and intricate elements. Despite being an architectural creation, I sought to infuse it with an organic quality that harmonized seamlessly with its environment. Deliberately opting for a modest footprint, I ensured the house melded unobtrusively into its surroundings. This was achieved by actively incorporating natural materials that resonate with the village's ambiance, aligning the structure with the locale's innate character.
Has anything exceeded your initial expectations in terms of satisfaction?
The Trenta introduced an interesting dimension with the inclusion of a deck. Even though the direct sea view isn't available from the Grove Dongsan’s specific location, ascending the deck unveils a view of the sea through the distant rooftops of the village houses. Enhanced by the accompanying sound of waves, this imagery alone holds the power to evoke profound emotions. Stepping beyond the low concrete fence that demarcates the village's inner road and crossing into the expanse of grass, an almost dreamlike garden ambience envelopes you. The expanse of blue sky ahead, the plants rustling gently in the breeze, and the symphony of natural sounds create a sensation that feels doubled, as though stepping into a realm beyond reality.
How did you delineate the spatial boundaries?
Grove Dongsan finds its home in a diminutive fishing village neighboring the shore. I was resolute about not imposing a conspicuous presence upon the endearing homes that populate this area. The extent of Grove Dongsan was defined through the integration of understated concrete walls and tree arrangements, meticulously aligned with the existing architecture and the contours of the land. A concerted effort to preserve the village's inherent ambiance resulted in a design that blurred the boundaries of space, effectively merging it with the surroundings. Although certain segments remain unfenced, they possess a distinctive aura, encapsulating a sense of individuality while remaining seamlessly integrated. This vision was captured in the manifestation of Grove Dongsan, where its essence was unveiled through its very mood. Even the neighboring country house's roof appeared in harmonious synchrony with that of Grove Dongsan, effortlessly embracing its presence. The inclusion of a blue roof, the overlapping textures—traits that might seem slightly unkempt—were not concealed, as they resonated with an authenticity that we found incredibly charming.
Are there particular experiences you seek during your stay at Grove Dongsan?
Unveil the windows wide and bask in the sun, luxuriating in the interplay of wind, light, and the symphony of nature's sounds. It's an opportunity to either delve into introspection or connect deeply with a companion. Embrace the allure of FireFit during the night hours—an opportunity for the mesmerizing dance of flames to gently mend your weary spirit, propelling you towards the demands of the new day.
For camping enthusiasts like us, the allure of a starry night is familiar, while for urban dwellers, even a fleeting glimpse of constellations presents a precious encounter. The deck has witnessed the serene practice of morning yoga by some, and it's an inviting way to harmonize with the space. Here's to hoping you absorb the invigorating energies emanating from the sun, mountains, and sea—sustenance for the soul.
What transformations do you anticipate in the daily routines of those who have ventured through Grove Dongsan?
Adorning the entrance of Dongsan-ri village is an inscription that reads "heart like the sea" on the village sign. My aspiration is that individuals who have graced this haven will etch the memories of their auditory, visual, and sensory encounters within Grove Dongsan. When confronted with wearisome or taxing moments in their everyday lives, these recollections will serve as a touchstone, offering solace and respite. May they find solace in rekindling thoughts of the sea or the embrace of nature, allowing relaxation to wash over them once again.

Navigating with a Weightless Mind
There come moments when the passage of time feels extensive, yet direction remains elusive. It's been said that the essence of a fulfilling life lies in anchoring oneself in the present. In a city prone to myriad distractions, grasping the significance of "this moment" becomes a challenge. The relentless rush and ceaseless complexities breed superfluous stimuli, hindering the ability to truly connect with the present. However, upon reaching Grove Dongsan, clarity emerged about what to retain and what to release. The baggage I carried seemed burdened with excess, while time found a new purpose in observing the forest and sky, rather than being entranced by my cellphone's screen.

ORIGINALITY
Embracing the Resonance of Nature-Inspired Space
In the concept of Grove Dongsan, a decision was made to prioritize harmony over structures that might hinder or disrupt the natural surroundings. The emblematic pine forest still graces the village, while the undulating hills' contours were embraced as integral features of the landscape design. Wooden boards, born from the very essence of the environment, were employed, and stones unearthed during measurements retained their unrefined character. The ambiance exudes an inherent "naturalness," underpinned by a spirit of coexistence rather than the pursuit of mere functionality.
DESIGN
Harmonious Etchings of Delimitation
When crafting a boundary to demarcate spaces, an inevitable discord often arises between the enclosed and open realms. However, Grove Dongsan takes a distinct approach, eschewing imposing barriers or stark segregations. This intentional decision emanates from a desire to remain intertwined with the village's ambiance, avoiding separation. What renders this choice even more exceptional is the seamless gaze permitted both inward and outward across the premises. As an organic extension of the village, it melds naturally, void of any jarring disparity. Those who reside here cannot help but cultivate a profound affection for Dongsan-ri, as the charm of this abode grows inseparable from the heart of the village.
Hospitality
Sustainable Offerings with Light Environmental Footprint
The distinctive setting of Dongsan-ri, nestled between a fishing village and a lush forest, has infused the host with a profound sense of purpose. It catalyzed contemplation on adopting a lifestyle and ethos that safeguards the delicate natural balance. In this spirit, Grove Dongsan introduces eco-conscious amenities forged through a partnership with the artisanal soap workshop, "Pado Studio." Embracing the use of soap shampoo bars and body wash, these offerings are accompanied by thoughtful environmental gestures, embodying the commitment to nurturing the environment.

An Unparalleled Encounter Found Nowhere Else
Grove Dongsan offers an array of distinctive vantage points. While the sea is a mere five-minute stroll away, its portrayal here is far from the theatrical. Instead, what unfolds is a warm embrace of the countryside's genial ambiance, the subtle sea presence just beyond the path, and the evergreen tapestry of pine forests and mulberry groves spanning the seasons. This amalgamation might just etch a more exceptional memory than accommodations overlooking the sea through expansive windows.
