Transforming the Serenity of the Forest into a Singular Space

Forests exist concealed, a natural canopy formed by densely entwined trees and their sun-seeking branches. They cloak everything within, creating a snug haven that invites a sense of ease. Upon entering a forest, an inherent comfort washes over us all. These wooded sanctuaries provide refuge for all life, not limited to humans alone. Insects find shelter behind the thick foliage, emitting their gentle whispers, while birds craft their homes among the trees. At times, we humans venture into the forest to shed our burdens. Perhaps, it is an unconscious recognition of the forest's hidden nature that leads us to speak of the "bamboo forest" as a place to unveil our innermost emotions. A forest, indeed, possesses the remarkable ability to mend any wounded spirit.

Within its embrace, we inhale slowly and cast off the remnants of our lingering concerns. The worries that weighed us down, as we nestled beneath the tree and pressed into the soil, seem to evaporate into a well-kept secret that nobody else comprehends. Is this not the reason why those who embark on a sojourn to the forest return with radiant countenances? The Haweoo is an establishment that encapsulates the essence of the forest within a singular space. It is unassuming and devoid of extravagance, simply existing in quiet harmony with the lush green surroundings. Here, we extend a warm invitation to those who seek solace away from the bustling rhythms of their everyday lives—a space that, much like the forest, offers solace and refuge. Just as the forest does.

Sending Well-Wishes to Our Guests

Haewoo embodies a project portfolio designed to address the multidimensional aspects of relaxation and extended stays. Soo-yeon Kim, the manager of Staypolio, has long contemplated the inner needs of individuals seeking a place to stay and the type of experiences such accommodations should offer. He recognized that a mere temporary lodging was insufficient; instead, he believed that stays should serve as a source of profound rejuvenation. In this pursuit, it became essential to reexamine the fundamental purpose of respite. Manager Soo-yeon Kim defined rest as the act of "easing one's inner worries and concerns" and wove it into the concept of a "Haewoo Journey."

The term "Haewoo," a literal translation meaning "relieving worries," is derived from the combination of the words "hae" (grass) and "woo" (worry). Just as a tightly pulled thread can only be untangled when loosened, the design of Haewoo accommodates the space to promote a relaxing atmosphere. It deliberately leaves room for the energy of those residing within while recognizing that the focal point of the space is the surrounding forest. In such a serene setting, it is only 'I' and the forest that remain. This structure offers a unique opportunity to shed accumulated anxieties by spending time in stillness, gazing out towards the forest. It is a stay that bears witness to the thoughtful care and hopes for the well-being of those who choose to reside here.

A Natural Retreat in Jeju

Daeheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju, home to Haewoo, is a picturesque mid-mountain village where lush greenery surrounds you at every turn. The village is characterized by its cluster of quaint, welcoming buildings. Among them, Haewoo stands nestled beside a lush forest, with a mountain rising behind and the distant sea on the horizon. Perched above the village, both Geundyeong and Wongyeong offer breathtaking views. The adjacent forest is so deep and abundant that its end is beyond measure. It was only natural that many elements of the Stay experience here would be intertwined with nature.

The name "Haewoo" itself encourages guests to share their stories amid the forest's embrace. The design embodies this vision, offering rooms that seamlessly open to the forest. Wide windows usher in the scent of fresh grass and the melodic songs of colorful birds. Within this space, the lines between earth and the immersive experience blur and expand.
MAKING STORY

Haewoo's design revolves around the core concept of "a forest-facing space," eliminating unnecessary elements to convey a clear message. The deliberate separation between interior and exterior spaces is aimed at creating distinct, perceptible environments. To seamlessly blend with nature, the exterior avoids artificial materials and instead utilizes heavier, dark-colored carbonized wood or dark gray-toned finishes, mirroring the forest's tranquility. In contrast, the interior is adorned with a bright and warm ivory palette, featuring soft curves to create a welcoming atmosphere. This juxtaposition of inner and outer spaces allows guests to experience a unique form of relaxation, while minimizing spatial divisions reflects the planner's desire to maintain a singular focus.

Despite using a consistent color scheme, various materials such as floor tiles, natural stones in the jacuzzi, and wall storco introduce subtle variations. The intentional omission and simplicity serve as instruments to emphasize the essence of the Haewoo journey.#
The organizer, upon visiting the project site, was immediately captivated by the forest's untouched beauty. Nature itself revealed its inherent marvels. The presence of the forest significantly influenced the concept, structure, and content of the accommodation experience. During the planning phase, the primary challenge was to define the relationship between the forest and the building and determine the perspective from which to view the forest.

The objective was to not only engage with nature outdoors using all five senses but also establish an immediate connection to the forest once indoors. The two rooms positioned horizontally, facing the forest, feature wall-to-wall windows. Single and double occupancy rooms encourage guests to embark on an immersive "journey of contemplation" with the forest, while the quadruple rooms inspire a "journey of shared experience. "The desire to have the forest's imagery etched within was represented as "Glimmer (Eorida)" in the double rooms, while the aspiration to blend and harmonize with others was encapsulated as "Seep (Smida)" in the quadruple rooms. The process of 'being glimmer’ was expected to alleviate weariness. The spatial layout was meticulously designed to serve the purpose of a clear and uncomplicated accommodation—a place where you can gaze at the forest from any vantage point and lose yourself in contemplation rather than complex pursuits. It embodies a simplicity that lightens the mind.#
SPACE

Until the Forest's Lasting Impression Fades Like Morning Frost

Nestled within the village, a gray brick building discreetly coexists with the forest's edge. Haewoo gracefully inhabits the space between towering trees and lush greenery, its presence akin to a seamless canvas in harmony with the woods. It neither boasts nor dominates the forest but, like the weathered stone walls of traditional Jeju houses, it blends effortlessly with the island's natural hues. As one ascends the staircase along the driveway, they are greeted by a welcoming tree, drawing them closer to the breathtaking panorama of forests and mountains. Upon entering, the straight path leads to a room for two, named "Glimmer (Eorida)."

Upon opening the door, a rush of fresh natural scents, comfortably warm temperatures, soothing music, and, most importantly, the forest, unfurls before the eyes. The room boasts an abundance of windows, providing a lush green spectacle that envelopes the space. It's a structure that allows you to admire the forest from anywhere in the room, whether organizing your belongings, enjoying a cup of tea, relaxing in the Jacuzzi, or awakening in the morning. Venturing into the outside garden, you can immerse your senses in the dense forest or sit on a bench, gazing at nature as if you're part of it. "Eorida" exudes an intimate ambiance, with every corner of the space within view, devoid of excessive embellishments. The atmosphere is carefully cultivated through the textures of the walls, tiles, and minimal furnishings. Haewoo embraces simplicity and tranquility.
INTERVIEW

Interview with Soo-yeon Kim, the designer of STAYFOLIO

Haewoo
Could you elaborate on the planning process of Haewoo?
The foundation of Haewoo’s plan lies in the backdrop of its creation. The area where Haewoo was established held a more pristine quality compared to the coastal regions, offering an abundance of lush greenery. On my initial visit to the studio, as I perused an album, I noticed that the photographs predominantly featured the verdant scenery. It was a place where one could truly connect with nature, whether from up close or a distance. The presence of a substantial forest located in close proximity to the site imbued the space with a comforting ambiance. During the planning of accommodation, the idea crystallized that it would be a delightful experience for guests to share their stories amidst the enchanting forest surroundings. This vision inspired the crafting of a narrative with the forest as its central theme.
I'm interested in learning more about your concept.
The reviews from our visitors highlight various unique and remarkable aspects of their experiences. For instance, one guest mentioned how they discovered Haewoo when they were feeling burdened and found solace. They recounted waking up to the enchanting sound of birds in the garden, and this experience helped alleviate their worries.Another individual shared their experience of checking in late and, while cleaning up, witnessed the beauty of the night sky and falling stars. Each person found their own way to address their concerns. This, I believe, aligns with Haewoo‘s overarching aspiration and concept.
I believe there is a deliberate intention to create an uncluttered and spacious ambiance within the space.
My intention was to cultivate a sense of spaciousness in the overall accommodation experience. I recognized that humans emit energy, which, although unseen, contributes to the ambiance of a space. Hence, I conceived the design with the idea of preserving a visual sense of openness. In parallel, we placed a strong emphasis on delivering a unique check-in experience, one that embodies the crucial aspect of hospitality. Upon a guest's arrival, we ensure the appropriate lighting and temperature settings, and we curated a video playlist that doesn't disrupt their connection with the surrounding forest.
I sense that Haewoo not only provide a place to rest but also extend care to those who stay. What kind of intention or sentiment did you aim to infuse into this space?
It's an abstract concept, but my intention was to wholeheartedly address the concerns of those who stay with us. For instance, I envisioned finding the perfect plant that would complement Haewoo. Locating a plant in Jeju with the right leaf shapes, swaying, and thickness was quite challenging. It involved a process of sourcing suitable plants from Seoul and transporting them to Jeju to complete the landscaping. I envisioned that our guests would perceive the care and attention invested in each small detail, symbolizing the accumulation of thoughtful gestures.
Could you provide an introduction to "The Journey of the Haewoo"?
I envisioned that those who visit “Eorida” can experience Haewoo by creating their own unique experience by engaging with the forest. In the case of "Surida," designed for multiple occupants, the central focus was on facilitating interaction among the guests. This interaction, I believed, might leave behind some emotional residue. To encourage sharing and connection, we placed small notes in the room, providing a space for guests to jot down their thoughts or concerns in a "Haewoo Note." The idea was that, by sharing this common platform, guests who arrived with similar intentions and mindsets could foster a sense of mutual support. For those who may find it burdensome to write in a notebook, they could still find comfort in simply listening to others' concerns by opening the notes.
What are some unique moments or experiences that one can exclusively enjoy at Haewoo?
I recall a visit to Haewoo when I went to film the interior space after its construction was finished. Time seemed to slip away unnoticed, and as the sun began to set, I ascended to the rooftop. The sky was ablaze with shades of red. I stood there with my colleagues, captivated by the scene for an extended period. I gazed at the tree's swaying branches and observed the birds perched there, and it brought a sense of serenity. This memory left a profound impression on me, and I highly recommend that those who visit Haewoo makes the journey to the rooftop at sunset to witness this breathtaking spectacle.
Who would you suggest Haewoo is best suited for?
Haewoo cater to individuals seeking relief from their concerns, those desiring solitude to contemplate their thoughts. It's ideally suited for people who are comfortable sharing space with friends or loved ones without the need for constant conversation. We encourage everyone to take at least 30 minutes alone, putting aside their devices and allowing themselves some quiet introspection.

Embracing True Restfulness

Amidst urban landscapes dominated by artificial structures, many intangible elements often escape our notice. ORIGINALITY

Personalizing the Haewoo Experience

Haewoo offer a unique perspective where you can witness the forest from such close proximity. Rather than treating the forest as mere scenery, Haewoo integrates the forest's natural essence into the overarching concept of the space. It allows individuals to seamlessly transition between their everyday lives, all while embracing the constant, reassuring presence of the trees. It doesn't impose any specific agenda, leaving visitors to embark on their own "Haewoo Journey" in their own way.

DESIGN

Embracing the Comfort of Simplicity

The notion that an abundance of possessions doesn't necessarily lead to richness is a guiding principle at Haewo. Excess can often lead to a departure from the essence of things. Therefore, Haewoo reflects a minimalist aesthetic in its space. Instead of overcrowding, it envisions the time spent by its guests. The design is deliberately unadorned, eschewing superfluous furniture – a space intentionally left empty. Visitors find relaxation akin to the buoyancy of swimming with a light heart.

Hospitality

Awakening the Senses and Inducing Relaxation

Haewoo seeks to engage and stimulate all five senses within its three-dimensional space. Significantly, the check-in process, as the initial interaction with the space, is thoughtfully considered. Room temperature and lighting are set to optimal levels, carefully selected music enhances the forest viewing experience, and subtle scents are introduced. Additionally, a tea set is placed within the space, inviting guests to enjoy a multi-sensory experience that facilitates relaxation.

PRICE

A Haven for Body and Mind

In recognition of the need for respite from the rigors of daily life, Haewoo offers an environment that encourages relaxation. It's a moment when weary bodies and minds find a natural reprieve from the demands of daily life.
