Waheul-ri's House Fills Your Mind and Body

If there was a form in the father's mind, it would probably look something like this. A low, long space from side to side comfortably embraces the land, creates a yard for us to play in, and provides us with a full meal without worrying about hunger. Located in Jocheon Waheul-ri, Jeju-si, Daily Shiho was built with the love of a father for his family.

A trip to Daily Shiho is a must for those who wish to experience "living" in this friendly neighborhood with a calm atmosphere at every corner. In keeping with my original intention to use this residence as a home for my family, the space here welcomes you with a feeling of comfort. Here you will find the perfect combination of practicality and aesthetics. According to the host, who owns a grocery store and is also a designer, there is an outdoor kitchen beyond the large 7 m wide window where you can host a garden party. When the space is opened and closed in a very elegant manner, there is no need to worry about privacy. It attracts Waheul-ri's nature but maintains a cozy structure so that you can simply play freely among the silver grass swaying in the calm wind.

The Daily Shiho is said to be a trip to empty yourself, but those who visit the facility return with something full. In addition to the mental feeling that has been achieved by staying, there is a physical feeling as well. The purpose is to strengthen your body by applying soft soil to your hands, planting unknown seeds on your sleeve tips, eating fruits from good soil, and engaging in healthy physical activities. A good lifestyle can be learned in this place. Il-Shi-ho's story of restoring a healthy lifestyle is presented here.

A Meeting of People Who Design Their Own Lives

To convey the life of Jeju to more people, the host Yong-sik Bae built a house for his family to live in. This place's starting point is closely related to a family's taste. In addition to having a background in industrial design and being well-versed in space content planning and brand management, Yong-sik Bae and Sun-young Park are deeply involved in the field of space. Besides providing healthy food and entertainment for the whole family, they put their hearts and souls into making Jeju feel completely at home.

It was Dong-han Seo, a designer at Studio Fragment, who dreamed of Daily Shiho and realized the imagination through architecture. It is based in Seoul, South Korea, and covers a wide range of subjects from design to industrial design. At a time when he needed a structure that could accommodate existing residences, other space elements, and various activities, such as outdoor kitchens, he was willing to accept the new attempt. There is a saying that people who enjoy it cannot be beaten, so the limitations of land and structure are considered to be new challenges, and the host's wind naturally dissolves into space.

location

A Neighborhood that Straddles the Sea-Mountain Boundary

Yong-sik Bae's favorite area in Jeju was Jocheon-eup. In addition to being a quiet neighborhood without burdens, it is also a beautiful place with many special spaces. In preparation for the birth of their first child, the couple traveled to Jocheon for prenatal care. Waheul-ri, located in Jocheon Stream, was also considered when they decided to build a house. It was both a trivial and a fateful occasion. During the couple's trip from Waheul-ri to the mountain, they discovered that Jeju has only one late-night restaurant, which was a small inspiration for the host. The first thing the host couple did was look around the neighborhood. Despite the fact that this was a small rural village, there were many cafes run by champion baristas and shops that sold organic desserts. In spite of its proximity to the city, it is an ideal setting for quietly sharing nature, as well as a convenient neighborhood for city dwellers.

It was also a special area for the designer of Seo-dong, who followed the guidance of the host, Yong-sik Bae, and faced Waheul-ri. Jeju Island is generally associated with a free sea or a foggy image of Seongsan, but in Waheul-ri, it felt that it is moving gradually inland to Jeju. It is a little far from the city, but it is not completely in Mother Nature. The feeling of walking into the forest alone at a sufficient distance from everything around him is said to have been impressive.

MAKING STORY

Daily Shiho had to take into consideration the characteristics of the village and the surrounding land where small houses were crowded together, and the structure in which families with children could live safely and freely. Coordination of relationships with the surrounding environment was the first challenge encountered on site. As soon as the main building was completed, the neighboring house was too close, and there was a problem with the cemetery being visible from the main building. At the time, there was no way to resolve the problem since it was located at the bottom of the neighborhood. Consequently, after meeting with Studio Fragment, the center of the space was pointed inward. By placing the pavilions parallel to each other in a shape similar to the existing low and long concrete building, the view could be neatly organized and various activities could be conducted. By appropriately opening and closing the edges of the space, a cozy fence-like structure was created while incorporating natural elements.

Additionally, a lot of care has been taken to ensure that children can play freely and without being aware of themselves, with large windows, wide lawns, and the Pavilion, which are the central points of this value. Yong-Sik Bae recalled that when he traveled and stayed in good accommodations, he always spoke with children as a habit. Keep your distance, do not run from it, and always be cautious. To ensure that all members of the family were able to enjoy their family trip and stay safe and happy, these restrictions had to be minimized. A long wall window connects the living room and the bedroom in the Daily Shiho. In addition to being able to watch their children play on the lawn wherever they are, such as in the kitchen or living room, they can also enjoy a stable time because their vision always contains traces of their activities. It was also determined that the interior kitchen, which occupies a relatively large area, as well as the exterior kitchen located in the Pavilion, should be designed with the family's place in mind. This was due to the fact that the host valued family gatherings, cooking, eating, and sharing time with family. In particular, Pavilion is in charge of a small complex cultural space for Daily Shiho with various activities such as sand play, experience programs, and bonfires.

Landscape and architecture are greatly influenced by the completed spatial structure according to this flow. As 'frames', all elements relate to space and environment. A 7m long window in the main building, a gap in the pavilion, and a tunnel connecting the main building and pavilion. From the outside, the daily view emphasized a sense of stress, but when you enter the interior, several frames were created by providing strength and weakness. Seo-dong's designer particularly enjoys the tunnel that connects Bon-dong and the Pavilion. It is possible to see a part of the main room on one side and a part of the kitchen on the other, and there is no lighting in this area, so you are exposed to the external environment as if you are being sucked deep into it.#
SPACE

In a Low and Quiet Manner, Embrace the Life of Jeju

Daily Shiho appears from a distance when you enter the alley along the tangerine tree. In keeping with the atmosphere of a very low and quiet neighborhood, the attitude of Daily Shiho is very calm and soothing. As it stretched low and long, it covered the entire sky. There are no walls in the room, but the space crosses a concrete unit that appears as if it is rising like a small hill, which gives the room a sense of privacy in itself. You will notice calm sunlight streaming through a 7m-long window if you park on the site in front of a spacious house and climb several stairs. From the outside, the frame appears to be somewhat cool and hard, but the interior is warm and inviting while maintaining a modern appearance. Despite maintaining the overall tone, each space had a different key color. A small room adjacent to the front door is the designer's study room. For you to be able to concentrate fully on your work, black is the most important color. By combining a clean line wall shelf, design furniture, artwork on the wall, and an incision made in the wall horizontally and vertically, it is possible to adjust the temperature of natural immersion.

Through the translucent curtain, you can see the appearance of the living room and kitchen that lead to each other. You will find luxurious massage chairs, carelessly arranged magazines and essays, and lifestyle goods that you will want to inspect one by one in the living room. Moreover, there are two kitchens indoors and outdoors. The indoor kitchen is highlighted with stylish burgundy colors, while the outdoor kitchen uses red bricks to create a subtle harmony with concrete's physical properties. The interior kitchen is equipped with a variety of furniture, from sensuous plates to pizza cutters, which you would like to use at least once, allowing you to have a richer cooking experience than at home, as well as basic condiments and spices, to demonstrate the host's thoughtfulness. There are a number of eco-friendly materials used inside the building, making it suitable for young children and people with diseases such as atopic dermatitis. A secret door in the corner of the kitchen leads to an open-air bath where you can enjoy a hot bath while enjoying a small garden. A barrel window is also planned in the independent bedroom inside, but it is opened toward the tunnel to provide a more private and special view.

Despite leaving your body still in Daily Shiho, you suddenly find yourself moving slowly along the flow of space. The reason for this is that the direction of space is clearly defined. As a result of his curiosity, he walks out of the tunnel to the Pavilion, sits on a camping chair, and observes the sun over the lawn. In contrast to its modern and neat appearance, Pavilion has a number of friendly features to enjoy. A brazier can be used to grill sweet potatoes and marshmallows, to participate in a woodworking program, or to use as a small playground for children.
INTERVIEW

Daily Shiho
I would like you to explain the points we discussed at the beginning of the project. Is there anything that needs to be reflected upon?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] It was my responsibility to provide a comfortable environment for the children. When I stayed in good accommodation, I thought about what I told the children the most. Such as "do not touch it" and "do not run." Through a large window in Ililshiho, you can observe children running around while their parents prepare meals or rest in the living room. Alternatively, they can also check the location of their parents. This is the one thing that attracts some customers. It is my belief that I have attempted to create a space that is similar to a house where I actually reside. Daily Shiho contains a wide range of furniture. Additionally, the washing machine has a dryer, making it easy to dry clothes after a day at the beach. This place was also divided into two areas, one being the master bedroom and the other being the study, for the same reason. At the border between travel and housing, I was seeking a new experience.
Could you please explain the meaning of the name Daily Shiho?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] Following the construction of the building for the first time, we held a family contest for the holiday season. It was my intention to send a trip to Jeju Island to whoever was selected. The most active participant was my father-in-law. In the words of my father-in-law, "you are the ideal in your own right if you are calm and happy." As I experienced the space in Waheul-ri, I sympathized with the feeling that it would be best to just have fun without worrying about other matters. I named it "Daily Shiho." My in-law gave me 50 names. I was surprised. I had no choice but to pick one.
Please describe the spatial characteristics of Daily Shiho.
[Designer Dong-han Seo] The main building was already constructed of concrete. To clear the eyes of the outside and organize the interior, a new structure was required. The exterior of the building was built in a modern state, so the direction was set in a minimal and modern manner in accordance with this. The old house was remodeled at that time, and many types of clay and stone walls were constructed, but this one seems to have been rather special.

For us, the outside kitchen was the most interesting feature. As I worked in Seoul in the past, it was often impossible to create a space where water could be used outside due to maintenance issues. Since the host also runs a shared kitchen, I was able to design an interesting structure for the outside kitchen. Through a gap created by crossing the sides, the pavilion, including the outside kitchen, is intended to offer a glimpse of nature. A relatively closed space occupies the main building, while the pavilion is half-open. I enjoyed seeing nature appearing in various forms of frames in a context in which the boundaries were properly loosened and separated.

In the process, I even had the idea of being a father. It is not as if you are making a strict guide and telling them what to do, but rather you are letting them run around freely within this boundary. Whenever I think of a poem, I picture a father who creates a large boundary with open and wide arms in order to protect his children.
It appears that you have paid considerable attention to the kitchen. Was there a particular reason for this?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] At the same time, Yongsan opened a grocery store named Urban Sanjang and a shared kitchen. I was very interested in food, and I considered the kitchen to be very important. Moreover, my children made it difficult for me to go to good restaurants when I traveled with them, so the fact that I began eating at the accommodations also affected me. The kitchen was the most important aspect of the accommodation that I checked when evaluating it.

The most important aspect for me was not to view Jeju as a tourist destination, but as a regional characteristic and a living element with abundant seafood. Another way to experience Jeju is to enjoy various, healthy, and fresh ingredients. A traditional Jeju house has a separate water kitchen. Due to the fact that it's connected to the outside, you clean fish or seafood there.
If you were to stay at the kitchen of Daily Shiho, how would you like your stay to be?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] I do not serve breakfast separately, but I have planned the ingredients for breakfast from the beginning. Due to the fact that I operate a grocery store in Seoul, I became interested in ingredients such as healthy bakeries, shakuteri, and eggs in Jeju. My goal was to provide you with an experience of preparing breakfast with a variety of ingredients using a local brand in Jeju. In my opinion, having breakfast with my family is a very enjoyable experience. My family is what I consider to be ideal. The service has been provided as a paid service up to now, but we will offer more ingredients as a free service from next year.
Could you please explain the materials used in the space?
[Desginer Dong-han Seo] I do not consider concrete buildings themselves to be artificial materials. Since humans make cotton and straight lines, it can seem artificial or commercial, but I believe that it is a natural part of the environment. There is a possibility that it resembles a stone. As far as I am concerned, it is in keeping with nature. Rather, I felt that I needed to make a point. Red bricks were used to tighten the outdoor kitchen, which serves as the main area for Daily Shiho. There was also red-toned furniture in the interior of the kitchen. My attention was drawn to the eco-friendly aspect of the interior materials. There are a number of family guests and young children present. It is possible to eat the floor.
I am interested in hearing about the experiences of those who stayed at Daily Shiho.
[Host Yong-sik Bae] the one-day guardian, returned with his parents. The number of revisits is quite high. At times such as these, I feel very rewarded. It is common for customers to stay for an extended period of time in the same manner as staying at home. Winter visitors who stay for a week at the end of the year. It is rare to be able to stay in such a comfortable manner for such an extended period of time. It's hard to find a place with such good furniture.

There was also a funny story. There was a time when a good cook came, but she left empty-handed and with heavy luggage. It is a comfortable kitchen with all the necessary tools, and there are many vegetables that were grown and raised on Jeju Island. Therefore, the aunts spent a few days at Ililshiho learning about Jeju-do kimchi. Go back with a lot of food. Whenever I see this, I think, "Yeah, I made a good protection just for this purpose."
What is the time of day when you feel the happiest?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] breakfast at the table, between 8 o'clock and 9 o'clock. There is a special feeling that I experience that is not present at home when I eat breakfast. Children play outside until they are instructed to eat. You can enjoy seeing the sunset right before dinner when you call the children. Through the cracks of the pavilion, the sky is especially beautiful.

[Desginer Dong-han Seo] Staying in Daily Shiho, I like the time zone between 8 and 9. It is a very fresh day, and I can feel the charm of the space deeply because it is a time when the sunlight, the exterior scenery, and the contrast of concrete shadows begin to appear.
In the future, what are your plans?
[Host Yong-sik Bae] Daily Shiho is an ongoing project. My work is constantly evolving. These days, I am thinking about the Pavilion Tunnel. The space is blank. My wife and I often discuss the possibility of filling the tunnel with plants to create an outdoor movie theater. That is why it is even more enjoyable. It is good to have one room and one option available.

Waheul Maemil Village (Waheul Buckwheat Village)

You are faced with an 81-acre buckwheat field. Let's walk between the blue horizon, which is reminiscent of Jeju's endless horizon. You should not miss the festival period when the buckwheat flowers are in full bloom when you visit Waheulli in May or November. Since it is located seven minutes' walk from Ililshiho Lake, it is more convenient.

After entering the door, the land you are standing on transforms into Tokyo, Japan. There are more than a hundred types of Japanese sake available at this late-night bar in Japanese style. Snacks such as skewers and yakisoba are also excellent, and you can taste the bitter taste of the couple's hands from Japan. This is the only late-night bar that has inspired host Yong-sik Bae.

Jocheon Milmilmyeon (Milmil Jeju)

On hot and cold days, Jocheon Milmilmyeon comes to mind. Bibimilmyeon, which contains a suitable density of noodles and seasoning that stimulates the salivary glands, and Onmilmyeon, which is scented with a faint sea scent, are two of the best choices. Among the menu items are black pork bulgogi served with wheat noodles at this friendly restaurant.

STAY

Daily Shiho Takes a Very Long Time and a Very Short Time

In comparison to other parts of the world, the time of the Daily Shiho flows differently. When looking at the sunset that fills the view, time seems to have stopped, whereas time runs like an arrow when sharing a meal with friends and family. As we look back on the journey from the beginning of the day-to-day care to the end, we leave behind our regrets.

4 POINT OF VIEW

ORIGINALITY

You will be able to fully enjoy the Jeju-like characteristics of this kitchen

Jocheon is characterized by its natural beauty. An outdoor kitchen that utilizes the sky as a roof and the lawn as a floor. The experience of cooking in an outdoor kitchen while breathing fresh air is truly unique. It is said that a good space can change lives. You should broaden your palate. Due to the kitchen of Ilil Shiho, I discovered the joy of cooking, the colorful food of Jeju, and the beauty of Jeju's land.

DESIGN

Harmony between modern and neat physical properties and structures

There is an exquisite balance between emptiness and filling in the concrete mass, which is neatly woven in a shape resembling the horizon. The three-dimensional structure, which incorporates large and small gaps, windows, and straight lines and curves, conveys an accidental rest and artistic impression to the viewer. The interior of the building also features a modern design. This picturesque space is completed by the matte touch, black, and burgundy colors which match the neat line.

Hospitality

The family home provides a healthy boost

It has been a while since I visited my family's house. It is enjoyable to examine design books, interior props, goods, and amenities one by one. There are many other things to enjoy depending on the movement of the sun. You must play on the lawn, soak in the open-air bath, and grill marshmallows and sweet potatoes over a bonfire when the sun has completely set. The mere act of staying causes me to lose track of time.

PRICE

An outstandingly tasteful space

Designer furniture, brand products, and even eco-friendly vegan care products that reflect the couple's clear tastes fill every corner of the space. Each of them represents a valuable curation. Once I have experienced furniture or props that I would like to use at least once, I secretly transplant this taste into the mental image of my house. As a matter of fact, it is a tastefully designed place.
