Time spent with cherished individuals holds a unique significance. When you embark on a solo journey, you have the chance to reflect inwardly, experiencing the joy of self-discovery. However, the real magic unfolds when you explore new horizons with companions by your side. Sharing the same car, admiring the same panoramic vistas, playfully passing dried seaweed back and forth to savor together, and uncovering elements unseen by your own eyes—all these moments reveal the true essence of your fellow travelers. It's when you witness the radiant smiles and deeper connections, experiencing the incomparable beauty of collective exploration.
In group travels, the arrangement of space plays a pivotal role. If spaces are too compartmentalized, they can lead to separateness, while overly integrated spaces might create inconveniences and a lack of personal time. The question becomes: what type of space optimizes the shared experience? JejeSoso is a haven that caters to diverse travelers. The establishment comprises "Jeje," a single-story building, and "Soso," a two-story structure, designed to accommodate no more than eight people. A mere glance at the building layout reveals a thoughtful consideration of various types of group travelers. Four stone houses and two brick houses, contemporary reinterpretations of traditional Jeju architecture, harmoniously come together like a village. There's a communal hot water pool for collective enjoyment and a dining area where everyone can gather, making it the perfect setting for spending quality time with loved ones, be they family, friends, or partners. Simultaneously, spaces are designed to offer moments of solitude, recognizing that not every experience needs to be shared. It's a multifaceted approach that enhances the richness of group travel, and it's what sets JejeSoso apart.

A Charming Small Town Infused with Jeju's Essence
JejeSoso is a visionary project by Z-Lab that meticulously designs accommodations and experiences, each with its own compelling narrative. They are crafting an array of spaces, from cozy retreats nestled in forested mountains and remote villages to more expansive lodgings designed for larger groups. Notably, they have been actively developing stays with a rustic village ambiance all across Jeju.
In their latest endeavor, they've once again reimagined "Jeju-esque" experiences through the lens of Z-Lab. The Z-Lab team drew inspiration from the structural elements found in traditional Jeju houses, having extensively explored various Jeju villages. They observed walls of just the right height, the clustering of small structures, and the dynamic three-dimensional configurations that shifted with every viewing angle. These buildings, united by a common use of materials, coalesced into a harmonious village-like ensemble. Taking cues from this architectural heritage, Z-Lab aimed to create a contemporary village within the framework of Jeju's time-honored design principles. Their vision culminated in stays that evoke the feel of a "small town," where guests can come together to share moments or find solace in private spaces. Thus, another village, known as JejeSoso, was born in the Deoksu-ri region.

The Verdant Splendor of Towering Mountains and Vast Tangerine Orchards
Deoksu-ri, conveniently accessible by heading south on Pyeonghwa-ro from the airport, presents a captivating journey. As you traverse the roads embraced by Jeju's majestic mountains, idyllic fields, and the presence of Oreum by your side, Sanbangsan Mountain, once a distant sight, draws nearer. Upon reaching JejeSoso, you're instantly captivated by the mountain's grandeur. Undoubtedly, the presence of Sanbangsan Mountain is the heart and soul of this village.
When conceptualizing the interior elements, particular emphasis was placed on aligning with the architectural aesthetics of the natural setting and framing the spectacular view of Sanbangsan Mountain. Beyond the boundaries of JejeSoso, a sea of tangerine orchards unfolds in harmony with the commanding presence of Sanbangsan Mountain. This site was once a tangerine field situated on the outskirts of Deoksu-ri Village. Given the expansive land, Z-Lab recognized the importance of creating a space that comprised several structures rather than one massive building. This approach allows you to immerse yourself in the authentic ambiance of Jeju, experiencing the land's vitality in three dimensions, even without venturing far from your accommodation. It's a space that beautifully encapsulates the essence of a purposeful journey, one that countless travelers have aspired to undertake.
MAKING STORY
From the project's inception, Z-Lab placed its primary focus on the breathtaking vistas of Sanbangsan Mountain while meticulously planning the spatial design. Situated on a site that dramatically showcases the magnificence of Sanbangsan Mountain, the intention was to offer visitors the opportunity to savor the mountain's multifaceted beauty during their day-long sojourn. Both rooms within the JejeSoso project afford captivating views of Sanbangsan Mountain, albeit with distinctive vantage points. In Jeje, the grandeur of Sanbangsan Mountain unfolds through a sizable dining room window, while in JejeSoso, it reveals itself through elongated panoramic windows flanking the bedroom on the second floor. The decision to accommodate two distinct stays on a single piece of land is a deliberate choice, inviting guests to savor the desire to experience both spaces. In addition to accentuating the view of Sanbangsan Mountain, careful consideration was given to capturing the essence of "Jeju-likeness."
The architecture echoes the traditional Jeju stone house design, characterized by its short eaves and a silhouette that gracefully blends with the natural surroundings. A natural-tone finish was selected to harmonize seamlessly with the environment. The incorporation of Jeju's natural elements, extending from Hallasan Mountain to the sea, is subtly woven into the landscape design, creating a metaphorical transition from forest to stone. JejeSoso effortlessly assimilates into the village's ambiance, becoming an integral part of Jeju's scenic beauty.
JejeSoso, a name derived from Chinese characters, embodies the essence of "here and there." It signifies the act of gazing at Sanbangsan Mountain from various angles, as well as the moments when those who stay engage in mutual observation. True to its name, the design process prioritized the art of visual connections and the interplay of gazes.
The JejeSoso compound is predominantly divided into two sections: Jeje and Soso. When viewed from a distance, it evokes the image of a quaint village with several homes nestled harmoniously against the landscape. Much like traditional Jeju stone houses, these two sections consist of multiple buildings, each with its unique allure. Depending on their function, they either seamlessly blend with the outdoors or create moments of privacy through architectural elements that facilitate introspection. Simultaneously, it was ingeniously designed to encourage natural visual connections between the inhabitants of each dwelling. At the heart of Jeje and Soso lies a communal swimming pool, flanked by a dining area with a canopy at the forefront. Additionally, there's a standalone two-person dwelling and a four-person bedroom. This configuration allows you to reconnect with your companions by simply raising your head or opening a window while you cherish your moments within a self-contained space. The intentional manipulation of gazes acknowledges the significance of moments when solitude may be preferred, interwoven with the opportunity for connection.
SPACE
The Abundance of Shared Journeys
Nestled against the backdrop of Deoksu-ri, just off Pyeonghwa-ro, lies the captivating JejeSoso, with the majestic Sanbangsan Mountain as its magnificent neighbor. As you unlatch the initial door, marking the commencement of your journey, and step into the inviting alleyway, a natural progression unfolds. Layers of tangerine trees and the grandeur of Sanbangsan Mountain merge harmoniously through expertly crafted landscaping and stone-clad greenery. On either side of the access road, you'll discover the Jeje and Soso rooms, each offering a slightly different panorama. The most striking contrast lies within Jeje, where the focal point is a central swimming pool. Surrounding this aquatic oasis, you'll find the dining area, accommodations for four, and two-person rooms, configured as three distinct cottages. The dining space in Jeje provides an unobstructed view of Sanbangsan Mountain, inviting you to immerse yourself in the lush scenery. With a table for up to eight people and a cozy sofa area equipped with a television, this open-concept room is seamlessly connected, facilitating communal gatherings. Whether someone is swimming on the grass in the middle, sipping coffee at the dining table, or engaged in culinary endeavors, it's an environment where you can initiate conversations at any moment, even when enjoying personal time. In essence, it allows individuals to appreciate the same space in a multitude of ways. In contrast to Jeje, Soso beckons you to open its door and step out onto a small courtyard. This section consists of a two-story brick building, a stone-house bedroom structure, and a swimming pool nestled beyond a brick wall.
What sets Soso apart is its slightly more independent spatial arrangement. Ascending the staircase adjacent to the dining area leads to a second-floor bedroom boasting a different vista from Jeje—a panoramic window framing the awe-inspiring Sanbangsan Mountain. The boundless sky and the charming scenery of Deoksu-ri beneath Sanbangsan Mountain provide an enthralling backdrop, making it an ideal spot to lose yourself in contemplation on a sunlit afternoon. If you venture out through one of the doors onto the outdoor terrace, you'll encounter a Jacuzzi and sauna area, thoughtfully oriented towards the mountain. Here, you can indulge in a rejuvenating soak and sauna session while savoring the mountain's splendid view. It's the perfect place to alleviate accumulated fatigue and relish quality time with your group, whether it involves unwinding or brewing a cup of tea. On the first floor of Soso's bedroom, Sanbangsan Mountain peeks out from behind a stately tree. JejeSoso unveils its captivating vistas through a spectrum of diverse spaces. From positions that afford you the chance to gaze upon Sanbangsan Mountain from virtually any spot within the premises, relaxation takes on various forms and unfolds in myriad ways.

JejeSoso
Who is the JejeSoso Majorly Designed For?
Director Joong-hyun Park: Initially, we had families in mind. The clients were a young couple with a son, and they wanted to create a space where they could bring their parents and enjoy family time. At the heart of both Jeje and Soso, there is a swimming pool and a communal dining area designed for gatherings. Additionally, there are standalone two-person cottages and four-person bedrooms for children. With accommodations for no more than eight people, it's an ideal setting for families, friends, or couples to have a delightful time together.
It seems that the design incorporates the view of Sanbangsan Mountain.
Soo-jin Kim, team leader of Z-Lab: Indeed, JejeSoso is strategically situated to offer dramatic views of Sanbangsan Mountain. During the design process, our focus was on ensuring that guests could enjoy various angles of the mountain. When we first visited the site, our cameras naturally gravitated towards Sanbangsan Mountain. It was evident that this was a place where one's gaze continuously returned to the mountains, and we sought to emphasize and address this aspect in our design.
What sets Jeje and Soso apart from each other?
Director Joong-hyun Park of Z-Lab: If Jeje caters to families, Soso is tailored for couples. In Jeje, there's room for both elderly family members and kids across the street. However, in Soso, if two couples choose to stay, one couple can enjoy time in an independent space on the second floor, while the other can comfortably relax in the ground floor bedroom.
The dining area takes up a significant amount of space. Is there a particular intention behind this?
Soo-jin Kim, team leader of Z-Lab: While it's essential to offer opportunities for separate moments, we wanted to imbue our time together with meaning. The dining area includes a table and a sofa seating for eight people. We aimed to create a space where delicious meals could be enjoyed, fostering quality conversations during the trip. Each house's dining area leads to a backyard, with Jeje’s backyard offering views of Sanbangsan Mountain, and Soso's opening up to Deoksu-ri Village. The design of the dining space was conceived with the idea that it should feel just as much a part of the outside scenery when viewed from the interior through a large window.
Is there a specific detail in the design that you're particularly pleased with?
Soo-jin Kim: If you observe traditional Jeju stone houses, you'll notice that the eaves are quite short. We reinterpreted this aspect in a modern manner by eliminating the eaves and creating a unique stone-house structure. Originally, when it rained, water droplets would cascade down the roof to the end of the awning. To address this, we had to embed pipes within the stone walls, which posed challenges both in the drawing phase and during construction. Ultimately, we managed to execute the design flawlessly without compromising functionality. I derive great satisfaction whenever I gaze upon the roof and stone walls.
Do you have any recommendations for guests during their stay at the repository?
Soo-jin Kim, team leader of Z-Lab: Given that JejeSoso signifies 'here and there,' I encourage guests to allocate ample time for moments of togetherness and solitude. Each space is designed with a scale catering to eight people, but it's versatile, allowing one group to have a shared space while another enjoys an open-air bath or swimming in the pool.
What is your favorite spot in the repository, and when do you believe is the most beautiful time to experience it?
Soo-jin Kim, team leader of Z-Lab: My favorite spot is the entrance space with views of Sanbangsan Mountain. The rugged stone sculpture serves as an artistic introduction that echoes the texture of Sanbangsan Mountain just around the corner, building anticipation as you enter the place. Depending on the weather, Sanbangsan Mountain can either be completely shrouded in fog or don a mysterious cloud hat on certain days. It's fascinating to witness the mountain in a variety of forms during the same time frame.

The Value of a Group Journey
The weight of the presence of others in our daily lives can sometimes become burdensome. Expectations, both our own and those of others, can unintentionally leave lasting marks on our minds. There are moments when we lose sight of the collective "we" even though we spend considerable time in each other's company. Perhaps the reason for this emotional detachment lies in the absence of personal space in our daily routines.
Traveling together offers us the much-needed opportunity to rejuvenate. The lodging becomes the very purpose of the journey for those who embark on it. It's a space where profound relaxation and joy harmoniously coexist. Here, at least, you can be fully present for each other, temporarily letting go of your worries. The flavors of shared meals, the exchange of words filled with admiration, and the cascade of smiling faces accumulate into a three-dimensional joy that remains incomplete when experienced in solitude. As you look back, the memories created in a space where Sanbangsan Mountain is always in view become even more cherished and special.

A Kaleidoscope of Nature's Vistas

Furthermore, the design has been meticulously crafted to allow you to immerse yourself in the island's unique ambiance. It employs a color palette that seamlessly blends with the surrounding environment and introduces elements like rocks and plants that symbolize the sea and mountains. Rather than presenting nature as a flat canvas, the goal is to capture the diverse essence of Jeju.

It's a delightful way to savor the swimming pool, where music adds to the ambiance, and the temperature remains comfortable throughout all four seasons.
