Namu Hotel
why

Into the silence, a place of relaxation

There may be times when I desire solitude away from the outside world and from the people, such as crowded trains and noisy streets. A time of solitude, away from the city and daily life, with just one's own thoughts, not in the arms of nature or the countryside, to face one's inner self. In order to completely escape from the next unknown flow of time and from the light of the morning and the darkness of the evening, one must leave somewhere. The 'where' seems absolutely impossible without someplace in the four dimensions beyond time and space. The reason for this is that even if you close your eyes, a new stimulus will occur the next morning, and even if you fall asleep, you will continue to experience your daily life. In order to embrace the romantic words of isolation and blocking, a dense and sincere space must be designed and planned in an active and systematic manner.

There is a hotel named after nature located in the middle of Seoul, not far from the Han River. Namu Hotel. By drawing light obliquely through minimal windows exposed to the outside and between trees and buildings. Nature's physical properties were utilized against the flow of time and everyday life to achieve a brief period of isolation and total blocking. In this space, you can take a step back from the intersection of interaction with the world. Relaxation is not about finding; it is about discovering. You should find a state of mind in which you can think and act calmly and leisurely, and not have it. Focus on yourself. It is in a quiet place, Namu Hotel, where you can find it.

An Architect who Talks about Life, Jae-heon Jung

Jae-heon Jeong, an architect who has built a variety of houses sincerely has said, "House is not about design, but about life." He believes that understanding users is more important than anything else, and he keeps in close contact with the architect from the planning phase through the construction in order to ask as many questions as possible. Buildings such as Damyang Hoshidam, Paju House, Unjung-dong Friend's House, Diffie Office, and Namu Hotel were slowly put into effect for more than 30 years as an architect. Even if you grow old, buildings which resemble nature can still be beautiful to look at. For 20 years, he designed the Namu Hotel. He, who enjoys traveling, has been thinking long about hotels that usually become a place to watch TV or sleep after about five minutes of fun at hotels with fine facilities and views. "It should be a place where you live, not just a place to sleep." Worry that hasn't abated for 20 years. The first time he walked onto the site, he desired to build a "tree-like" hotel that would conceal anything else other than swaggering or prominent buildings in the city and its surroundings, and he purposefully redesigned the outside to create precious light, air, and an opportunity to forget.

Namu Hotel

As a Tree in an Overcrowded City

The beautiful scenery of Gwangnaru, which has been visited by writers since ancient times due to its location on the road from Seoul to the south, has attracted the attention of writers since ancient times. The Gwangjin Bridge was constructed in 1936 and the Cheonhodaegyo Bridge in 1976 to connect Gangbuk and Gangnam, and its function as a ferry was lost, but the National Road No. 3 and the Gangbyeon Expressway passed, so it is still one of the best areas for travel. However, the surroundings can be quite disorienting.

On the road inside the Han River, the Namu hotel has the same surroundings every day. A lack of neat commercial facilities, buildings constructed for a purpose rather than for aesthetics, untimely placement of the electric poles, and loose, tangled electric cords. In the middle of the city's scenery, the Namu hotel is located. Although it is a new building, it is unique among buildings built decades ago. It doesn't come out strong. Although it is new, it blends seamlessly into the existing structure. The front of the hotel adjacent to the road has a silent appearance reminiscent of the back of a person with a thick upper body. Whether it is a person, an object, or a space, fate, and impression follow the name. The name 'Namu Hotel' refers to a tree in the middle of a chaotic city. Namu Hotel acts as a tree that provides shade, vital materials, and warmth for the city.
MAKING STORY

Architect Jae-heon Jeong emphasizes natural elements in his designs. As the main material of the Namu Hotel is old bricks, the simple but varied appearance of the variations is achieved using various methods of cutting old and old bricks to reveal their flesh. This material is recycled. Whenever industrial goods are used, they only possess a beautiful appearance when they are being built, but natural materials are able to blend well into the surrounding landscape over time and naturally age. Recent studies have shown that he prefers old bricks because modern bricks are baked at high temperatures and are hard and smooth, whereas old bricks are baked at low temperatures and have properties similar to soil, which is the original material. Therefore, even if you raise the wall thickly, it will remain comfortable and warm. The brick is said to be the 'son of the earth'. In order to construct the spacecraft, listening to other materials, including the natural elements was critical. As a result, like its name Namu (which means "tree" in Korean), it has been designed to resemble nature, which naturally ages with time. As one moves from the simple and calm front impression to the entrance of the rear, one is led down a long entrance path around the alley. The lobby and elevator spaces are arranged in a maze-like structure in order to capture the comfort of the house as it is, but with a different perspective due to changes in the route. Each of the interior rooms, which consists of various types of homes, has its own individuality and has the same balcony as the yard, allowing visitors to perceive an abstracted sense of nature through the planted plants, the open sky, and the exterior wall. The image maximizes the effect of being protected in a closed environment while having a sufficient sense of openness, and it carefully crops, restraints and contains the scenery of the room so that the scene you always see can be experienced differently.

Although the front part of the hotel building is free of diagonal restrictions and sunlight constraints, the northern part of the rear has naturally received diagonal lines due to the lack of sunlight. It has nevertheless created a volume as if it had not been restricted. Utilizing the structural characteristics of each cut volume made up of pyramid-like slopes, the rooms in the north of the rear have a distinct appearance. This can be accomplished by designing a rooftop yard or creating a three-dimensional yard. In addition, because of the restriction of the right to sunlight, the top two flexes (double floors) were a result of the legal environment, which failed to raise the stairs to the eighth floor. Since the stairs could not go higher than seven floors, they became double-storied by utilizing the remaining space on the eighth floor. An attempt was made to maximize the advantages of being able to open the sky, have a greater view of the scenery, and have no concern about privacy. Each of the two double-decker rooms is large on the upper floor and small on the lower and each is designed as a Tetris puzzle and has a similar location, but different features. Upon ascending one staircase, you could see a different landscape from your daily life, while the other staircase was connected up and down in an empty space.#
The respect and trust that the client sent to the architect created a space where the architect was able to realize the purpose, value, and composition of the area as a hotel for twenty years. Something that could stand on its own had to be designed since the building was situated in a noisy environment, not near the Han River. Thus, there were few requirements to rely on the building. This posed a real challenge. In this project, the cluttered road is designed with a straight cross-section so that it does not stand out from the surrounding landscape, and the entrance is placed on the backside, facing the alley, so that the journey gradually moves away from the city and reaches a particularly interesting space.

Additionally, it initiated a different approach from the existing hotel in terms of the unit format. As opposed to a row of rooms in a similar space created by copying and pasting the same hotel room, each room will be three-dimensional. It offers sophisticated auxiliary facilities and high-quality services and creates differentiated rooms according to designer conditions, rather than monotonous and boring rooms with the same design. The majority of houses in this era enclose all of the outside space inside in order to maximize the interior space. Although Namu Hotels are located in different areas and have different structures, most rooms have balconies, and elements of the exterior are brought inside. A comfortable stay, but to meet nature, even if it is intangible, is the most important part of life. Light, wind, air, sky, and urban vistas that intersect in outer space are rearranged to resemble high brick exterior walls, and perspective is applied in order for guests to feel and experience familiar landscapes differently.#
SPACE

A Place in which Each House has a Distinct Face

The moment you enter, you are treated to a different experience. By walking around the alley in a quiet and neat manner, you will cross the water like a journey through a deep forest and enter the hotel through the front entrance. As a consequence of the architect's deliberate long-picked journey, a transition from daily life to an ideal space is achieved. The road to the elevator to reach the reserved room is not difficult after passing through the garden of water, stone, and time-consuming gardens and entering a narrow and long peaceful alley. The road to the elevator is not complicated but leads to a maze of movements. As you move away from the city and daily life, you are introduced to each house with a different face as opposed to a series of similarly situated rooms arranged along a straight corridor. It is like a hotel with different houses on each floor and room.

When taking a closer look at the rooms with different names, the oriental box is a terrace-free room among several rooms, but it has an internal bathtub, which makes it unique, and it is larger and more comfortable than the standard room of the existing hotel. It is composed of an open bedroom and a bathtub area inside the room, while the bathroom and shower area are separated. This neatly woven wall, which is ornamented by tall trimmed trees, acts as a door between the two spaces, making the overall impression neat and comfortable. A terrace is provided, so there is a natural connection between the indoors and outdoors, which allows you to feel the change of seasons as they occur. Only Terrace One 305 is equipped with an open-air bath.

A square room is one of two penthouses on the top floor and is one of two double-decker rooms hard to find in Korea, with stairs that climb diagonally along the wall, so that you can view views of various rooms. As soon as you open the window on the first floor, you are immediately transported to outer space, where the light rises obliquely and the wind blows. The dream of having a small yard becomes a reality. On the second floor, you will find a second terrace beyond the bedroom with a cozy bed and an open-air bath, so you can enjoy outdoor baths in all seasons. Through the gap in the long exterior wall, a dim view of the city can be seen. On the faces of trees planted on the terrace, you can observe the season and the weather. The enjoyment of going up and down the stairs is heightened, resulting in a new experience that is now available in the comfort of your own home.

Another penthouse, The Circle, is also a two-story structure. On the lower floor, there is a large living room and terrace, from which you can see the Han River far away. Large wooden sofas and furniture make the room more comfortable. It has a cylindrical structure on the left side of the living room that surrounds the snail-shaped stairs going up to the second floor, and when you climb the stairs with a blocked view, the sudden double-story space appears wider. On the second floor, just as in the square room, there is a terrace and a hot tub.
INTERVIEW

stayfolio
Namu Hotel
Would you mind introducing yourself?
I find introducing myself to be very embarrassing. I am an architecture professor, a professor of architecture who teaches students, and a professor of architecture. Therefore, I believe the job should be a little different from that of an architect who only designs.

In the process of modernization, our culture has been severely marginalized. The life we lived was fast, big, and cheap. It was exhausting with nothing to hold onto. No matter what the culture of the past may have been, we are moving towards a society that is based on quantity (not quality). It's about getting to know ourselves more by focusing on the things that were in our DNA, which act as a bridge between our past and the things that are right for us today. So, if you were to introduce me, what would you say? I think that's why I have been doing this.
What was your first reaction when you received an inquiry about a Namu Hotel?
It was the hotel that dissatisfied me the most. I travel frequently. In Korea, I travel quite often. The hotel's colors are reflected in the design. The local color is also reflected in the design. In my opinion, there is not a hotel that expresses Seoul in Korean colors. It is almost like a chain hotel. Isn't it just like an apartment everywhere? You can find it in Tokyo and London. It has always intrigued me what it would be like to design a unique hotel in Seoul.

If you go to a hotel, for instance, if you go to a regular chain hotel both in Korea and abroad, even if you go to a nice location, there is nothing to do after five minutes. It is either a picturesque location or a city hotel with good transportation. Even though the scenery outside is beautiful, I am unable to communicate with it. It is simply a view. That was very frustrating. I usually travel to Busan frequently. I enjoy staying in hotels. The scenery there is amazing. However, we are unable to go outside, so we cannot enjoy the sea breeze. It would be fantastic if it were a space where you could enjoy it in harmony with the natural environment, but until now, most hotels have been about sleeping.

I, therefore, considered it to be a place where I could stay in the city, where I could observe the changes in nature and the seasons, as well as the outside space, the light, and the food. That is why I have been thinking about Namu Hotel for a long time. It would be better if the hotel offered more than just sleeping accommodations. When I stay in a hotel I am restricted in my freedom. I cannot open the door outside, I cannot leave, I cannot breathe. It would be nice if I had a choice, whether it be a house, a hotel, or an office. My goal is to create a space in which you can feel free and put your life into it. It would be nice if it could be a place where people can experience beyond sleeping.
When you first visited the site, how did you feel?
It is a challenge, as I mentioned. There are no support systems available. The scenery is not good, and it is about 50 to 100 meters away from the Han River, and a haphazard building blocks the river. The transportation is insufficient. There is no support in the surrounding area. How do you build a hotel in such an environment? As an architect, I believed that I could design a new place. As an example, how about an urban hanok or Bukchon Village? Although there is no special scenery and you cannot see the view from there, if you enter the building, you can get a sense of the season and think freely, and both inside and outside are present. In such a case, we are still able to achieve something. Natural environments, light, wind, materials, and invisible elements. There is definitely something to write about if you look closely for something that is not powerful.

There are times when my mother sees me at home with nothing to eat, but one day she serves a nice meal for hungry children. I will assist her in preparing the meal. Even if there is no special recipe, she always manages to make something special for her children. Just like that, architecture finds things that aren't really there. There are many items that you can find if you look for what you do not have. There is only one sky. There's light. There's a season. It begins with the most mundane of things. My challenge was to use invisible ingredients.
The entrance was located at the back, which made it feel special.
The entrance is located in the back for two reasons. First of all, the building is not open yet, but for the front, it is more economically advantageous to construct neighborhood living facilities rather than a lobby. Second, it would be more advantageous for modern buildings to communicate with the city rather than the hotel lobby. Both economically and from a societal standpoint. When I entered the hotel at the rear of the vehicle, I had to make a long journey. There are some designs that are not just made for one reason, but for one or ten reasons. Although the place is attractive, what do you think would be more relaxing than driving in a car and getting off the road and entering the hotel immediately? The majority are located on the main street where the hotel is located.

If there were an entrance from the main road to the alley again, it would be more convenient. Actually, I believe the hotels are one house. An ideal house is one that is a bit deeper than the roadside. Stores are better located by the roadside. Shopping is not confined to hotels. Isn't it more elegant to turn around and return home after a long journey, staying at least for the day? This is what I intended.
A hotel built with a lot of worries and questions, I think.
In spite of the fact that the hotel has been built for some time, I designed it over a twenty-year period. This did not take just two years. Rather, it took 20 years. It has been designed for 20 years for this very reason. In fact, I hope that these aspects of the hotel are changed a bit. Since 20 years ago, I have contemplated how to change it. There is also the question of why hotels ought to be prototyped in this manner. Wouldn't it be nice if it was comfortable like home? What can I do to make it feel like home? If so, what is comfortable? I considered these questions carefully. I used to work at a house called Achiul. I had to build 363 square meters on 198 square meters of land, which is a substantial amount of space on a very narrow piece of land, but the master bedroom is located on the third floor, while the living room, restaurant, and kitchen area are on the second floor. This is a very compact and vertical space. Most typical houses are constructed from a yard or something similar woven into a flat weave, but how do you make that flat comfortable in a three-dimensional setting? I thought long and hard about that.

The results are still in the hotel. There is a deck, not a cliff, and a yard where you can meet with both the inside and outside. It is a very psychologically comfortable environment. I have attempted a number of approaches to create a three-dimensional yard, solving the privacy problem and providing light. Those items were compacted and arranged in different rooms. Therefore, I would like to inform you that we did not design 22 or 3 rooms, but we did build 22 or 3 detached houses.
In conclusion, if you have anything you would like to say to the guests at the hotel, please do so.
There are many things trees provide for us, but we do not take advantage of their benefits. Trees are very important. Trees provide comfort and richness, and their appearance can vary depending on how they are used. You can use it as firewood, and if you use it properly, you can create something really beautiful. The possibilities are endless. The importance of trees cannot be overstated. In that regard, I hope that the Namu Hotel will be used in that manner. The space itself is not particularly elaborate. I tried to express it as a place in itself. It would be beneficial if the people who use the space could slow down in their busy lives and come here with someone who shares their interests. I think it would be a good place to discuss deeply with them.

What are the charms of a hotel? You can alleviate some of your worries by shifting your place of residence. You will feel a bit lighter. Travel offers the opportunity to escape the inertia of everyday life. I enjoy traveling, and that is what makes it so enjoyable. I think only about the situation there when I leave, after putting aside my other responsibilities. Then, I hope that the guests at the wooden hotel will put aside those worries for a while and think a little more slowly, slower, and more freely. Therefore, I hope that you will experience this kind of life experimentally.

To the Space Away from the City

When you arrive at the entrance, you will see the hard and hard faces piled up with natural materials for the first time. If you turn along the alley long enough, you will arrive at the entrance. The road gradually leads away from the city. You can see and feel stones, trees, light, and wind as soon as you reach the entrance. When you step on the large, straight stones in front of the bridge-style entrance and enter the interior, you are greeted by a warm wooden wall. Upon crossing the water, you will enter an unusual ideal space. A dense pattern of minimalist things wraps the whole body and mind gently and warmly. In order to draw the outdoors inside, most rooms are designed to have balconies, a feature that can satisfy the desire of urbanites who are interested in having a few yards and sun. You can hear the sound of the given sky, the breeze, and the faint sound of the city from a distance if you open the door and go out to the balcony blocked from the city. This time allows you to see things that are invisible and to discover things that you live without feeling. During your stay, you can peacefully experience the stability of your house, the special experience of this place, and the architectural value of the building in harmony. The Unusual Experience of Moving from the City to the City

Walking on a carefully calculated path that is not noticeable allows you to remain calm and focused. There is an effect of transference. You are able to walk from your daily life to travel, and during your stay, you feel comfortable as if you were at home, not staying in a hotel. We offer a comfortable stay in a building that has received an architectural award. It is a non-routine experience that takes place away from the city in the city, and it is close but trivial, allowing you to explore and understand the forgotten roots in an entirely new way.

DESIGN

Keeping a Distance without Going Far

Jae-heon Jeong, an architect, and professor of architecture at Kyung Hee University and an architect with the Mono Architect Office, was awarded the 2021 Korea Architects Association Architecture Award for his work. In addition to the composition and structure of the existing hotel, several houses were incorporated into one building, and light and wind were incorporated into the interior by placing balconies, an external area, in most rooms. It has crafted-in detail the experience of staying away from modern people who are unable to slow down, and you can engage in abstract experiences that awaken unexpected feelings that are based on the comforts of home.

Hospitality

The Moment when You Face Yourself

It is a luxury to have the leisure to reflect upon what you spend each day in a busy city. A moment later it stops in a space that resembles a tree piled high with soil for relaxation, which can only be found when one seeks it out on purpose so that anxiety disappears before you know it, and it is calm and calm as if you are in your mother's arms. It is as if you are facing away from yourself from the city view from the balcony, which is like a yard where you can smell the fresh air outside at any time. This prolonged period was certainly necessary.

Considering the Seasons and the Passage of Time

In a dizzy alleyway, the tree stands tall like a dependable tree, making it possible to observe the flow of time and the seasons, which conveys a sense of comfort and new experiences. Such as stones, trees, the light, wind, and the cityscape.
