How long can it be considered new? There are new restaurants, cafes, and even accommodations. Novelty attracts modern people in a magnetic manner. After having held something new once or twice and having experienced it once or twice, new spaces are being created endlessly to capture the hearts of people who regard it as a thing of the past. The process is unstoppable. There are so many new places that we cannot keep track of, and it is hard to absorb all the information.
Accommodations are no different. In the wake of COVID-19, overseas travel was blocked for a considerable period of time, and many people headed to Jeju. The 0th priority for domestic travel is Jeju, which is unmatched by any other place in Korea. The moment I board the plane, I am struck by the mystery and the charm of moving to a foreign country while speaking the same language. Due to its treasure island status, Jeju Island is flooded with countless accommodations. There is an increase in the number of accommodations with similar colors and results. For those who travel to Jeju due to the need for an escape from their daily lives, this may not be welcome news. There is a desperate need for a ray of light and an escape from the jungle of similar places that are pouring out like clones. It is a time of thirst when something really different is needed. After a prolonged drought, a place like sweet rain was born. A place with a sunset glow deep in a heart, and the sweet rain is called "Seori," a space of contemplation.

Feeling the Glow of a Sunset in Your Heart while Remembering It
As part of its expansion of domestic accommodation with Jeju's blind whale, Z-Lab is developing accommodation with a variety of stories. A stone house in Jocheon-eup called Jeju Blind Whale was remodeled by Creative Design Research Institute, which has upgraded the status of domestic stay to several levels. It is noteworthy that there are not as many new projects as there are projects that have been naturally woven and polished from existing buildings. Nevertheless, newly constructed projects such as Yangyang Brid Hotel, Jeju Around Poly, and Zanwol are also very flexible and attractive. In many instances, Z-Lab's exceptional ability to blend local culture into buildings, spaces, and stories is evident. It was the same with Seorier. As they sat on a site facing the distant sea, remembering the sunset's glow in their hearts, they planned and designed it. To create an atmosphere similar to that of a sunset, where the light disappears, but the lingering feeling remains long, we read about nature, the weather, and the neighborhood, and we create a frost that is both fitting and unusual, but interesting. They properly followed their principle of "creating time and space reinterpreting Jeju Island."

SEORIER
location
View of the Beautiful Oreum from the West
The area of Jeju Island is three times that of Seoul. We underestimate its size. When the island is divided in half by a horizontal line, it is divided into two parts: Seogwipo-si and Jeju-si. A vertical line is drawn by the people of Jeju to divide the island into the west and east. Located 35 kilometers along the west circumference road from Jeju-si, Geumneung-ri, Hallim-eup, is known for its beautiful west sea and Geumneung Beach, as well as Biyangdo Island beyond. Geumneung Beach is also known for its sunset restaurant, which varies according to the season. With its back to the magnificent Oreum in Geumneung-ri, Seorier is located in a position where the sunset faces west. Due to its elevated location, you can see the sea in front and hear the sounds of nature as it faces the mountains behind. A peaceful landscape is what comes to mind when you think of the countryside, and the area is closer to the rural area than any other area on Jeju.
MAKING STORY
My goal was to create something that was easily smitten by the original scenery. The principle had to be maintained, and I had to feel as if I had been there from the beginning. It was imperative that the shape of the oreum and the building blend naturally. In keeping with the architectural and design choices, the roof material was made of stone. Moreover, the roof shape was designed to be a little longer to match the oreum, but not too high, and it was designed to feel heavy. A lot of thought was also put into harmonizing the frost with the oreum. There is a busy road in front of the building where many cars go to a farm, and farmers also walk there on a daily basis, so the stone pillars are stacked high. For the height to not be too burdensome, I had a lot of concerns about eye contact and had to open the window to see the sunset, so I designed it to look as much as possible at the surrounding nature while thinking about the depth and relationship with the road. Therefore, the building is located higher than the road. Also, the overflowing sea is obscured by the village if you view it from the road. Stonework was constructed in order to provide a view of the sunset from the back of the oreum. An outside kitchen was boldly placed in the middle of the corridor connecting the main building and the annex, which is not found often in Korean architecture or in exotic resort accommodations. Through contemplation, a toenmaru was created, a form that could sit back and forth, and it created a story and history without the use of old materials. The weight of time is attributed to it. By choosing a heavy material such as stone, rather than metal, Jeju's stone house was able to maintain its calm stability despite being a new structure.
It was contemplation. This was the first word that came to mind before I could think of a name. The keyword "contemplation" was chosen first. The two greatest advantages of Seorier’s land are the open sea to the west and the landscape of tall trees to the east. The sunset must be viewed without words and the climb cannot be climbed, but it is a warm and comforting space surrounded by trees, so I chose the term contemplation while considering what words and experiences to use. The first pitch written by poet Dong-ju Yoon remained in my mind one day after I contemplated this and that with the word contemplation. In conversation, I witnessed the first pitch of the moon and the warm play of the sun (sunset). Eventually, the thought-provoking experience of contemplation led to the notion that it allowed something to stand in our minds. This is how the name Seorier came to be. Furthermore, three thoughts were planned, which can be summed up as three keywords: contemplation of gaze, contemplation of dialogue, and contemplation of organization. I refer to the experience of time to watch the sunset by time, speak to each other at night, recall the conversation I had last night and the sunset I saw early in the morning, and plan my trip by time.
SPACE
Experiences in Silence
Space has real power when its story is told, not when it exists as space. The space in Seorier tells a story. Silence contains a message. As soon as you plant the content "Thinking" there one, two, three, the space begins to speak in silence. The stacked stonework blocks the entrance as if entering a temple or a house in the forest. Upon reaching the wooden door, stop and open it. On the second floor, there is an outside lounge, where you can hear the sound of birds. Regardless of the angle from which I view a mountain, I am able to see it. Seorier's first impression is presented here. Once you have passed the moat, which you have to cross once before embracing nature, there is a quiet garden that makes you relax and relax. The outer lounge is surrounded by gardens and nature. Various warm-up arrangements in which cold water is poured little by little near the heart, which is surprised when it enters the cold water immediately. As soon as you see your first impression, you stop once more on the spot. There is a long main building with a heavy wooden structure where you can sit for a long time, and the roof creates enough shade to cover the width of the toenmaru(wooden porch), which makes it windy even though there is no cool breeze. There is a breeze in the air. As they approach the main building, they are greeted with a warm impression similar to that of a hanok. This room has a beautiful view of the field filled with large, horizontally torn windows. There is no better place to enjoy greenery than here. As the seasons change, this frame captures a variety of landscapes. You will find the bathroom and bedroom after passing through the living room space where you can sit face-to-face with people and have a conversation over delicious food and carefully selected LPs. A large window on three sides of the bedroom at the end of the building provides a glimpse of the Jeju sea beyond the field when the curtains are pulled back. While maintaining a sense of stability, you can also be open to new experiences.
After walking along the outer corridor, you will reach the firepit by going down three or four stairs. It is an annex. Even though it is smaller than the main building, it has several steps and separates spaces such as tea rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms, leading to movements not encountered in daily life, resulting in a unique experience. The tea room, which occupies a fairly large area, plays an important role in the event. It is displayed in wooden chairs and glass cases halfway between the sitting and the entrance. As soon as you tilt the sliding window next to it, an outdoor bathtub comes out. There is sufficient depth in the tub to allow the body to soak deeply. In the darkness of the night, a subtle light illuminates the garden path parallel to the verandah of the long main building. It crossed there, reached the bathtub, walked there, and sat in front of the bulge. There are a number of stories that seem to be heard dimly wherever you stop. As well as the theme, the importance of the story can be determined by the stayers.

SEORIER
What inspired you to name Seorier?
The naming process for Seorier was not an easy one. Prior to naming, the keyword "contemplation" was selected. From the beginning, we took into consideration the two great advantages of this land, the fact that it is tall and forested in the east, while offering a wide expanse of open sea in the west. I decided on the word contemplation to describe the sunset, as it is a cozy space surrounded by a forest, so I thought about what words to use to describe it. After pondering the word contemplation for some time, I came across poems written by poet Yoon Dong-ju that proclaimed, "The moon shines" and "The sun shines in the conversation." It was the concept that the contemplative experience we thought of could eventually allow us to stand something in our minds that led to the naming of Seorier.
It would be helpful if you could explain the planning process to me.
Recently, all the designers and Z-Lab have been concerned with how to make something different and what characteristics they will add to what they have been doing. It is a very large assignment and I keep thinking about it. The same can be said about our results so far, but ultimately, we must take advantage of the land's advantages. In my opinion, the most notable feature of the frost was that it was situated in an area where you can view the sunset, the sea, and the field wall in the distance. The big open window on the west side of the building faces the perfect direction. When the sun sets between 4-5 p.m., there is a window that feels the glow of the sunset, whereas in the backyard, there is no sunlight at all, even early in the morning. Our goal was to create a space where we could accommodate spaces that would fit in the dark yard and windows that would allow us to see the sun setting upside down.
Did the project undergo any changes?
The idea for Seorier was almost identical to the first PT I designed. The images are not all the same, but everyone sympathized with the images of looking at the sunset in a large frame and enjoying contemplation in a space surrounded by hills. I considered how to make the materials harmonious while minimizing their clash with nature when choosing materials rather than making changes to the design. It is important to consider both the heavy wood structure and the stone roof as the largest architectural characteristics of frost in order to explain the story of CEO Roh, who is in charge of construction. First of all, we focused on the details in order to increase the completeness of the roof with stone materials, and not only this, but we also designed the atmosphere of the stone roof, not the metal roof, in order to blend naturally with the oreum in the back and support the weight. In fact, I believe that it created a space where you are able to see less.
The building seems to harmonize with the surrounding area as if it were originally there. It would be helpful if you could provide an explanation from the perspective of design.
From the beginning, I have considered that the shape of the oreum should blend naturally with that of the building. A stone roof material was selected to make the roof appear natural, and the shape of the roof was designed to be longer and not higher, but to feel a little bit weighty. It was the most contrasting component with Oreum, but I considered making it more harmonious. There was a nearby road where many work cars went for farming, and farmers often walked there. I piled up the stone pillars a little high, and I was concerned about eye contact in order to reduce the burden of the height. In addition, there was a homework assignment that required me to open the window large so I designed it to look out at the surroundings and nature as much as possible without colliding with passing vehicles. Despite having the appearance of a traditional house, it is said that the eaves were deepened as a result of the deep sunset, and the roof created a corridor between the pillars and the building, so the device expressed the design and functions more effectively than a traditional house. Considering that this structure is a neck structure, especially in the middle, the inner column may appear a little thick, however, there are no columns between the columns and the center of the living room, which means that the space has been designed to be wider and more relaxed.
Could you please explain the movement and space of the frosting?
Approximately 15 meters after crossing the first main street, you can see the roof of Seorier. Despite the fact that the frost appears to be closer to us, when we arrive, the high walls and stone pillars are blocking our path. I think Seorier’s first impression can be captured by the view from the back if you open the iron door to the space on the stone wall. Having created an outdoor lounge for the first time, we entered the entrance, climbed the stairs, inspected the lounge where we initially arrived, recognized the space, and then walked down the alley to the dark yard. The main building can be found if you look backwards from the opening of your eyes, and the annex can be found if you walk naturally from the space to the opening of your eyes. There are large windows on both sides of the main building, so if you open the large door, you will be able to see the sea from a distance. Through the window, you can see the sunset, fields, and even the sea in the distance. It is usually possible to check in between 4 and 5 p.m., but I was actually interested in checking in later. Due to the fact that I wanted the sunset to welcome them first. The atmosphere and feeling of the room will be much more profound if you enter the room at sunset time. Comparatively to the lower kitchen space, the lower bedroom space at the end of the hallway has a high ceiling, but we have worked hard to make it feel more intimate. A complete different feeling is intended with the annex, so the space is divided, the materials are different, and the overall atmosphere is very different. The tea room was the main purpose of the space when I first designed it. It was my intention to induce a calmer experience by enjoying tea in the open-air bath and the tea room behind me. The windows are vertically torn, and I designed it with the idea of feeling the wind. As a final experience, you will have the opportunity to experience the corridor, which is the best time for the corridor from dark to dim until the sun rises the following day. There is a lot of noise coming from the birds if you sit there. My first impression of the oreum was that it was simply a forest, but I believe that the most valuable resource of the frost is the sound of birds. As you sit there listening to the birds and the wind, I hope that you will enjoy your time.
It is my understanding that you can experience three types of thoughts. I would appreciate an explanation.
Words and actions convey three thoughts. Organizing, looking, and talking. However, it is more appropriate to view these words as stories about time. Looking at the sunset from the entrance was the idea of looking at the sunset without saying a word. My intention was to converse with people who came late at night or in the evening, and to recall the story I related last night in the corridor. My story is one of contemplation over time.
What would you like to do on a day off in Seorier?
There is a time I would like to experience rather than a day. In the morning, I would like to get up early. At approximately 5-6 a.m., when the sun is about to rise, I would like to wake up, sit in the corridor, do nothing, and remain still. If you live in Seorier, please wake up early and capture the joy of nature with your ears and eyes. It is not an exaggeration to say that this space was created by the power of time.
STAY’s recommended Local Restaurant
Surico
Wine bar with a beautiful garden that is famous for its natural wines. They operate a unique wine warehouse with a modified stone house that appears to be half buried in the ground and a new bar area. You will be transported to Jeju's time by a light amount of delicious plates divided into day and night, along with a glass of natural wine recommended for pairing.
Panpo Miin
In Jeju, it is not easy to locate old restaurants. Panpo Miin is considered to be one of the best old restaurants in Seoul. It is known for its pot rice served by the boss. It is ideal to mix abalone rice and stone octopus rice with egg paste and serve it with a few nice side dishes. If you do not have enough egg sauce, you may add it separately. It is recommended that you be a little greedy and try the stir-fried octopus.
STAY’s recommended Local Cafe
Jeremy, Aewol
This is one of the best roasteries and cafes in the west of Jeju. In spite of the fact that the simple and vintage interior could not be used due to COVID-19, coffee and drinks have been available inside for some time. You will never forget the taste of the owner's coffee, regardless of how busy you are.
STAY
Take the Time to Think Deeply
The word ‘contemplation’ means to think deeply about something and to rationalize it. We may not live as we thought if we do not take the time on purpose, and we may have a frightening thought that we have as we live. Before such an unforeseen event occurs, Seorier looks at the sunset and is in the arms of Orm, allowing them to contemplate one after another from time to time.
Early in the evening, after entering the room, I contemplated endlessly the red sunset. Late at night, the thought of people soaking in bathtubs full of water or sitting around a dining table to discuss procrastination occurs to me. During the early hours of the morning, you may sit at a dining table, bedroom, or corridor and contemplate the task of organizing with paper and stationery. It is about experiencing heartbreak during a difficult time in one's life. There is no one place to use for contemplation; it can be held in nature's arms, held in the warmth of water, or held in one's own time. Light emanating from the windows of the main building and the cool light within the oreum are in harmony. You can find peace by walking along the long stretch of the interior and exterior, as well as the garden path. While walking through the garden, I can feel the wind, hear small stones rubbing against one another, and hear birds chirping in the forest of Oreum. Enjoy the time of mind in the arms of nature.
4:00 pm
Standing in one place for a few seconds
I have arrived. I am standing in front of a small door. As I climb the stairs with simple luggage, I can see part of the climb beyond the lounge. Once again, it stood in place. I stand in front of the main building again along the corridor after receiving greetings from nature. Let your heart be rung by the sound of birds for a moment while you sit down and close your eyes. Under the shadow of silence, I prepared myself for contemplation.
7:00 pm
Scarlet Sunset with a Wavy Heart
During the different seasons, the sea can be seen dimly over the fields and field walls. Observing the sun, clouds, and the magic of the day created by the sky from the exterior wall of the main building, we look endlessly into the west. In the calm mind, the waves are seen to wave as the sunset colors the entire world. I can spend hours just looking at it, an experience I have never experienced before. In other words, it is a contemplation of the act of looking.
10:00 pm
During the Subdued Evening
The day and evening have passed, and it has become night. As the night wore on, the sound, light, and air of the bathtub were all absorbed in a calm environment. By doing so, I am able to regain the time I lost while living my daily life. Throughout the process of relieving fatigue, tension in the mind is also relieved little by little. There are a number of conversations that need to be conducted. Have a cup of warm tea in the tea room of the annex. Anxiety and tension are absent. A contemplation of conversation over conversation.
6:30 am
The More Time I Spend, the More Valuable Time I Obtain
During my stay, I never awoke so early. Sit in the corridor, overlook the forest of Oreum, and listen to the sound of birds as you open a large window. My thoughts turn to the time I spent contemplating here. I hold a pen and writes something on a piece of paper without the intention of writing anything. When something is written, it becomes writing, and writing requires calm. As a result of the way I am spending my time, I feel as if I am gaining more valuable time. All three considerations have been addressed.
11:00 am
An Enjoyable Stay in a Peaceful Environment
My stay ended with a sense of calm in my heart. Having walked down the stairs and stood on the road, I am sure that the past time will remain in my memory for a long time to come. It is with this power that I will be able to earn a good living every day. When I have to wipe out old emotions and backlogs of conversations, I will return here and have three thoughts. It is time to look, talk, and organize.
4 POINT OF VIEW
ORIGINALITY
Keep Up the Good Work, and Walk in the Right Direction
The three contemplations, a device for experiencing time fully, are experiences that have never been attempted before in any accommodations. There must have been times when you were bored without a television and did not know what to do because you were in an awkward situation. The time was arranged by Seorier. While differentiating space and thoughts over time, change seats and turn your eyes around. It is a time of contemplation arranged in a carefully constructed environment.
DESIGN
Light, Shade, and Nature are Long and Deep
Having to make an unintended eaves deep, looking at a lush forest in the west, and looking at a mountain of a lush forest with cool winds creates a shadow. A space is created in the story where one can spend time in the arms of light and nature. There is an elegance to the space where you spend time with water, fire, and sunlight with varying degrees of warmth. While walking on the veranda, corridors, and long drawn paths of Oreum, keep your back hands in the shade of the Oreum. As the orange sunset touches the walls, floors, and landscaping plants of the main house, time seems to slow, and soon one is lost in thought. Unintentionally combining the atmosphere of a traditional house with the intention of contemplation.
Hospitality
The Moment When Kindness Reaches One's Heart
The journey to the inside is similar to a walk. Emptying and filling are performed simultaneously while walking. Your heart's story should be brought up, your emotions should be expressed, and your tangled thoughts should be combed evenly. With the kind guidance of others, you will soon reach your heart if you sit, walk, soak, drink, listen, and watch each action flexibly. There is still a long way to go before the real journey begins.
PRICE
Emptying My Mind and Buying Time
What is the best way for me to choose my thoughts and ensure that they are correct? There is no doubt that it is difficult in a daily life to overflow with stimulation, eye-catching novelty, and a lot of stimulation. As a result of taking the time to get here, I have bought time. It is a period of contemplation that leads itself to time without being absorbed by it. There can be no substitute for this valuable experience. The mind was empty and time had been bought. When the mind is empty, it escalates quickly. Embraced by the woods and the sunset.
