HAUDO represents a space that showcases new perspectives and sparks inspiration. It provides avenues to see, hear, feel, and contemplate. Throughout HAUDO, various sensory elements are strategically placed to provoke exploration of these life's subjects. As we navigate through these intersecting sensations, inquiring and responding to ourselves, we ultimately confront our true selves, stripped of pretense.

This remarkable establishment unveils the grandest hanok ever presented by THE CHAE, featuring eight exquisite rooms and a tranquil courtyard that transport visitors to different dimensions of time and space with each transition. By delicately posing questions to its guests and offering a range of sensory encounters, THE CHAE:HAUDO aims to guide individuals towards a purposeful life.
HAUDO encompasses eight distinct themes that invite contemplation and self-reflection on the journey of personal growth. It facilitates multi-layered experiences such as meditation programs set amidst lush gardens, rejuvenating spa rituals that foster inner tranquility through warm water immersion, and non-alcoholic cocktails crafted with concentrated natural ingredients.
The captivating design of HAUDO was envisioned by Studio ORS, while the construction was skillfully executed by Duruduru Corporation. The beautiful gardens were meticulously crafted by Oita, and the furniture, curated fabrics, and welcome tea were thoughtfully sourced from the barley workshop and Uhwa, respectively. Overseeing the entire project was Soo-jung Kim, the esteemed CEO of HAUDO, ensuring a harmonious and captivating atmosphere throughout the space.

Samcheong-dong holds a distinct allure that sets it apart. Nestled amidst its narrow alleys, you'll find grand hanoks reminiscent of the prestigious yangban houses, interspersed with charming galleries and delightful boutique shops. This neighborhood boasts a rich tapestry of cultural offerings, with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and renowned galleries firmly rooted within its streets. Not only that, but it also continually embraces the emergence of hip and trendy cafes, carving out a unique space that distinguishes it from other hipster enclaves in Seoul. Samcheong-dong serves as a gathering place for individuals with diverse interests and needs. It seamlessly weaves together knowledge and culture, art and tradition, emotions and intellect, catering to a wide range of preferences. In the pursuit of a contemporary reinterpretation of hanok architecture, HAUDO's design approach ingeniously reimagines the traditional hanok layout. The central gathering space, traditionally the main hall, has been transformed into a dining room, fostering a modern sense of togetherness. To optimize circulation, an efficient indoor corridor connects all the compartments. HAUDO’s interior space features a captivating selection of materials, with various shades of wood taking center stage. Unconventional elements such as black wooden floors and vibrant red-patterned trees, rarely seen in hanoks, are utilized as finishing materials in the dining area. The integration of oak furniture creates a seamless harmony within the space. The imposing kitchen and the presence of a substantial dining table lend a grandeur and stability to the room.
During the planning stage, HAUDO envisioned individuals in their 30s and 40s, who possess refined tastes and a broad perspective, as their target personas. The identity of "finding comfort and ambiance in the timeless and natural, yet harboring expectations for new experiences within them" was established, and intricate details were meticulously implemented. Recognizing the persona's inclination towards a sustainable lifestyle, great consideration was given to selecting eco-friendly and health-conscious products that honored nature and rituals. To cater to the discerning preferences of HAUDO's clientele, thoughtfully curated amenities, natural ingredient-based bath products, and sensory incense sticks were thoughtfully chosen. Custom-made furniture was meticulously crafted, eschewing ready-made products to provide a truly unique experience.
Additionally, drawing inspiration from the balanced proportions of traditional hanok salmun, bedding, cushions, and blindfold objects were created for HAUDO. Recognizing the shared qualities of traditional salmun's proportionality and modern minimalism, these elements were given a contemporary twist by incorporating vivid blue hues reminiscent of chokchohyang. This deep sea-like color evokes a refreshing and rejuvenating sensation, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the space. To further enhance the ambiance, a dreamy and immersive playlist, akin to being in an art gallery, was thoughtfully curated. A custom-built wooden box discreetly houses a Bang & Olufsen speaker, seamlessly integrated into the wall alongside an iPad, functioning as both an object of art and a source of entertainment. The lighting and mood, orchestrated through an IoT scenario, create a truly sensorial experience that evolves with the space.

What factors influenced your decision to choose Studio Ors for the architectural and design aspects of the project?
I have been closely following the work of Ors with great interest. The team's extensive experience and impeccable sense of aesthetics have truly impressed me. While beauty can be subjective, I noticed a distinct touch of this team in the spaces that I found captivating. There was a remarkable convergence between their design approach and my personal aesthetic preferences, which ultimately led me to commission their work.
The team's notable strength lies in their unwavering commitment to high standards of material selection, attention to detail, and the pursuit of beauty. They possess a broad knowledge base and demonstrate boldness in their use of materials, all while maintaining a sense of luxurious beauty. It was evident to me that their focus was not on following fleeting trends. Instead, they showcased a deep understanding of current trends and the ability to create sustainable spaces that exuded both luxury and aesthetic appeal. This alignment with the values of The Chae made them a perfect fit for the project.
I'm curious to learn about the blending and harmonization of traditional and modern elements in hanok design.
HAUDO embodies the philosophy of The Chae, emphasizing the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Upon entering the traditional hanok's gate, the design immediately evokes a sense of this harmonious juxtaposition. While incorporating bold elements like metal and glass, often associated with modern construction, the essence of hanok identity is preserved through the presence of wooden gansal doors in the side spaces. The overall design exudes a hip and contemporary vibe, yet remains true to the authentic nature of hanok architecture. One notable feature is the main dining area, where vibrant red-colored mass furniture stands as if it were a folding screen, acting as an artistic object in its own right. Surprisingly, despite its appearance, the furniture is crafted from wood. Opening the sliding doors of this modern masterpiece reveals a kitchen, akin to exploring an exhibit within a modern art museum. The ceiling's rafters, the traditional stool for sitting with one's legs folded, and the hemp wood gate in the meditation room all exhibit the oriental beauty inherent in hanok design. These elements serve as gentle reminders that, amidst the contemporary aesthetics, this space remains rooted in the rich heritage of hanok architecture, resembling a living museum where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously.
Which architectural feature captures the most attention?
The standout architectural element in HAUDO is undoubtedly the rafters. In the lounge space, the ceiling surface leading to the hallway is flattened, allowing glimpses of the partially exposed rafters within the frame. This design choice effectively highlights the traditional elements while seamlessly blending them with a modern ambiance. Notably, in the area previously used as a restaurant, where the rafters had experienced significant damage, a bold decision was made to incorporate them into the ceiling surface. This preservation of the sloping gable and the exposed beams successfully maintains the hanok's sense of space, contributing to the unique character of HAUDO.
Which space holds the utmost significance in the sensory journey proposed by HAUDO?
HAUDO’s spa space stands out as a modern addition within the realm of traditional hanoks. It offers a unique experience where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously. The spa area showcases a blend of contemporary luxury and elegance by incorporating modern and lavish materials for the walls and floors, carefully allocating space to enhance its aesthetic appeal. To maintain the balance between tradition and modernity, the original form of the rafters on the ceiling and the existing hanok windows were preserved, providing a seamless integration of architectural elements. A simplified version of a traditional Korean sliding door separates the spa and powder spaces, adding a touch of Korean beauty. While the spa space exudes luxury and privacy, great care has been taken to preserve the hanok identity. An example of this is seen in the brewing of bathwater, where natural bathing agents such as Eoseongcho, mint, and cypress are placed in a hemp bag, showcasing a traditional sensibility within the modern environment. Throughout the space, the use of hemp fabric adds a gentle and warm touch, balancing the potentially cold atmosphere with a sense of softness and hanok aesthetics.
What hidden details await in the meticulously designed sensory space?
To enhance the sensory journey at HAUDO, several key elements have been thoughtfully incorporated. Firstly, in terms of taste, a selection of non-alcoholic cocktails crafted from concentrated natural ingredients and accompanied by floral teas is offered. The focus on natural fibers extends to the bedding and fabrics, ensuring a pleasing tactile experience, while beauty is enhanced through the use of natural dyeing techniques. The ambiance is complemented by a curated music playlist that harmonizes with the space, and regular collaborations with artists introduce artworks that resonate with the essence of HAUDO. Additionally, a meditation program encourages deep breathing while enjoying the garden view, accompanied by the captivating scent of condensed natural Palo Santo. Visitors are invited to share their thoughts and emotions about their day at HAUDO in the Visitor's Book, fostering a sense of inspiration for future guests.
In conclusion, how would you define the qualities of an ideal "good place to stay"?
The vision for The Chae's accommodations extends beyond a mere place to stay. Rather, it aspires to create an immersive experience that not only offers respite but also serves as a catalyst for inspiration and a transformative opportunity in one's life.
