Tired minds wander in search of a place to rest after a long day at work. It is difficult for me to leave my hometown, which welcomes us and is always waiting for us upon our arrival. There may or may not be a real hometown. Rather than just spending my childhood here, it's the nostalgic scenery that made me decide to use this place as my home away from home. Whenever I think about it in my head, I feel sad, affectionate, comfortable, and healing. There is a house called "Uigwisodam," located in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, a small village along the ridge of Halla, which welcomes us with a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. It is always our intention to be a home for all of us. Does this have anything to do with the fact that it was built to resemble the house of a grandmother in a remote rural area? The warmth of the story of Uigwisodam allows me to experience the depth of time unknown and the relaxed belief that everything will work out in the end.
You will encounter the first impression of Uigwisodam as you meander up the quiet alley, reminiscent of Jeju's old thatched house. An Odumak (cottage) peeking out of the space creates a quiet, soft atmosphere. Your gaze becomes free when you enter the space of a native impression. The orange and blue sea is drawn by tangerine trees. Due to the unique topographical characteristics of the area, the tangerine tree that runs under your feet creates a unique view since it is built with orange fields and heights. Through bold architectural efforts, this landscape is poured into the eyes of the viewer. This wide window, which opens the boundary completely and flows into an L-shape, gives you the chance to take in the entire scenery without being interrupted by any interruption of your gaze as it seamlessly leads to the boundary.
The point of contact between nature, architecture, and life was the one point that brought me to the end of my worries about what is real rest and what is real Jejuness. The following is the story of Uigwisodam, who is waiting for us with plenty of space to be filled with his presence.

Resting in Nature's Warmth
Yoo-jung Noh and Myeong-gyu Han, who are a married couple, have carefully examined Jeju for nearly a year in order to create a comfortable, warm, and natural stay. There is a space that captures the essence of Jeju and has been preserved as a dream to welcome travelers and run a hotel. They visited the Formative Architect's Office as a result of their sincere passion for architecture and desire for a different architectural experience. Known for its experiments with a variety of architectural structures based on the color of the region and the surroundings, Formative Architects Office primarily works with Directors Young-sung Ko and Sung-beom Lee. The project was commissioned by Yoo-jung Noh and Myeong-gyu Han, who has been involved in several projects on Jeju Island, including Surico and The Stair. In order to create a space that moves people's minds, Formative Architects Office strives to build the form of emotion into a tool called space. Their values are also contained in Uigwisodam.

UIGWISODAM
location
A Small Village Surrounded by Tangerines, Camellias, and Cedar Trees
It is located in the middle of Namwon-eup, in the village of Uigwi-ri. This is a place where tangerine trees are so colorful and beautiful that the entire farmland is known as a citrus garden, and it boasts a mild climate that is ideal for growing tangerines. Uigwisodam is located at the end of a winding road, making the neighborhood even more sparsely populated. Uigwisodam was built in an area filled with tangerine trees, a characteristic of the region. There are thousands of baby camellia and cedar trees that remain upright in this area, making it very beautiful to see the harmony of various vegetation that symbolizes Jeju. In the midst of large and small trees, it is possible to feel the comfort of being embraced by nature itself. An open structure was intended to allow this landscape to be fully appreciated in space while protecting the environment to the greatest extent possible. I enjoy the pleasure of enjoying beautiful fruits and flowers, as well as the smell of soil, grass, and the sound of birds singing in my own space. Moreover, due to the nature of Jeju, it is impressive that it considered the rainy climate from the beginning of the design. The eaves were tilted into the courtyard, and the tea ceremony was scheduled to be held while the raindrops fell.
MAKING STORY
Uigwisodam is characterized by its challenging and creative wood structure and material composition. Specifically, the original design and construction plan of the wooden structure was recognized and the wooden construction award was presented. There are three hybrid structures in Uigwisodam, of which the walls are concrete, the roof is wooden, and some steel beams pass through. It's because of the view of the tangerine field that this structure is applied. To maximize the view of the tangerine field from the kitchen and living room, transparent glass, not a pillar, was used in the corner of the room. It was characterized by beams on both sides and a steel pillar entering from the inside. It is particularly noteworthy that the Y-shaped column is constructed of circular steel pipes, allowing it to be connected naturally and stably to the wooden structure.
As a result of closely connecting Jeju's natural environment with the concept of a rural house, stone walls can be seen everywhere within the space. It would be more meaningful if the stone wall, which has great meaning in Jeju, crossed the inside and outside of the space and divided the structure. Thus, the stone wall placed outside has been extended to the inside in the form of a grid. A stone wall that blocks parking spaces, warehouses, gardens, and outer spaces was pierced into the interior to serve as a TV wall, and the stone wall that separates the detached house from the spa was placed along the space direction so the view over the garden could be properly divided.
Further, Tree Neowa represents the concept of Uigwisodam most intuitively on the exterior. Taking inspiration from the grid-shaped roof that appears on an old thatched house in Jeju, I applied you to the wall of the space. A thick layer of nuggets that take advantage of the textures are placed on the wall to create a unique sense of volume and reveal a unique personality, which ultimately results in a frugal beauty, contributing greatly to the creation of an image of a rural house in Jeju. Additionally, the composition has a more natural appearance in relation to the surrounding landscape.
In order to complete Uigwisodam, consideration was given to the nature and topography of the region. Material characteristics such as wood yarns, rafters, and stone were emphasized in accordance with the surrounding natural objects, while at the same time, appropriate strength and weakness were adjusted to harmonize with the landscape. Its rough wood material is emphasized from the outside, and it is structurally low and long, while the hotbed stands out, giving it a familiar and appealing appearance. Likewise, the inside of the space should be emptied or opened little by little so that the outside edge can be viewed clearly. Bringing buildings, villages, and landscapes together is the secret to their success.
Moreover, it is unique in that it is designed to overlook the natural topography of the surrounding area. As it is a relatively closed topography, we have attempted to create an open, cool landscape. So a huge concrete mass was used to raise the space with a basic height difference from the land. In areas with a significant height difference, there is a more dynamic slope and the scenery of tangerine trees flying under your feet is refreshing. The view of the landscape is high, which gives me a feeling of freedom and openness.
Despite the extended family staying together, they paid attention to the composition of the room so that no inconvenience would occur. While the private space is separated far away, the bedroom is located at the very end of the house, in line with the plan of a country house where the Daecheongmaru is centered and the rooms are divided on either side. To create a Daecheongmaru connected to the outdoors, the living room was constructed with only a folding door without a separate sofa and a kitchen in the center. It is more private since one bedroom is constructed outside as if it were a detached house, and the ondol room is situated on one side of the yard, so you can relax more independently.
SPACE
When Uigwisodam first faces the earth, he encounters nature, architecture, and life. When entering the parking lot, we consider the eyes of the person who remains away from the moving line. Upon parking your car and following the parking lot, you will not be able to enter immediately, but you will create an entrance in a bent shape once and walk leisurely into the area. By doing so, you'll be able to see the space in the future while looking at the texture of you filling the wall. Over the louver window, I can see a faint view of the tangerine field after climbing into the yard. By projecting outside nature deeply into space, rather than completely blocking it, it sought to stimulate the senses of a comfortable country house by wrapping the surroundings in a cozy cocoon of nature.
The space consists primarily of the main building, the detached building, and the surrounding area. There is a kitchen in the main building that represents Uigwisodam, and you can enjoy dining while enjoying Jeju's nature close up in an open structure. There is a Gotjawal garden outside the kitchen that is based on the bracken and moss that can be found in the forest of Jeju Island and in the fields of tangerines. A wine bar with a good atmosphere was also designed in order to suit the tastes of a host who was so passionate about wine as to obtain a sommelier certificate. It was another pleasure to travel and make delicious food using fresh ingredients from Jeju. Having a folding door connecting the living room to the yard offers a close view of Jeju's nature, while the innermost bedroom is outfitted with a Simmons Black mattress and five-star hotel bedding to ensure a peaceful night's sleep. A similar structure can also be found in the bedroom of the annex.
Various outdoor environments are available in Uigwisodam where you can experience nature up close. There is an open-air bath that faces the tangerine field and is equipped with hot water that can be used throughout the year. It has a generous size and can accommodate eight adults. A wondumak and a hut form the motif of the Odumak, which firmly protects one yard. A ladder leads to the second floor, where you can read quietly or enjoy the village scenery beyond the horizontal window. Also, there are parasols and picnic baskets on the lawn, and a BBQ zone overlooking the tangerine field provides a sufficient travel experience.

INTERVIEW

UIGWISODAM
I would appreciate it if you could describe how you developed the concept of "countryside home", Director Young-sung Ko.
Initially, it was called "Three Meals a Day". I thought it would be great if there were a number of things that guests could make in the accommodation. Toenmaru and Daecheongmaru, which are two old country houses, were introduced in the process. In addition, when I stay in a country house, I enjoy the feeling of being in the middle of nature, but it becomes completely dark at night, which makes me feel uneasy. Consequently, we designed a space that is moderately cozy and connected to the outside by means of the Jungjeong structure. As much as possible, we attempted to preserve the existing tangerine fields. In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to locate accommodation with this native image in Jeju. Especially if you are a newly constructed accommodation. As a result, I consider it to be special.
It has been reported that you have won the Grand Prize for Wooden Construction. Can you describe the structural characteristics of Uigwisodam?
The Uigwisodam structure combines three elements. There are concrete walls, wooden roofs, and steel beams in some of the buildings. The structural characteristics are particularly evident in the dining area of the kitchen. Typically, columns are placed at corners of a space, making it difficult to fully capture the natural surroundings. As a result, we inserted a steel column from the edge inside the corners in order to make them meet the glass. A series of scenes can be seen from the dining table. Also, considering the design, we made a Y-shaped column from a circular steel pipe with a steel structure and connected it to the wooden structure. To achieve this, numerous studies were needed on wooden and steel structural joints, or concrete joints.
In the house, there is a stone wall. Can you tell me more about that?
Due to the fact that it is a country house, I thought it would be nice to separate the spaces with stone walls. Outside stone walls extend naturally inside and are used in a connected manner. It is natural to walk along the stone wall wherever you go, from the parking area to the kitchen, from the garden to the spa area. A proper adjustment was also made to the view exposed through the height of the stone wall.
I can see that the outer walls are made of a very unique material.
With the motif of you in mind, I created my own material. In the story of Uigwisodam, I wanted to include a material that evokes Jeju's old thatched house, but I figured the materiality of you would be a good match for the direction we are taking. By projecting this on the wall, you will be able to experience the simple beauty of the material. I do not really use Neowa much. There is a lot of humidity in Jeju, so taking care of it is difficult. We applied oil stain several times and constructed it in detail in order to prevent rotting and insect infestation.
Please let us know if you have any additional spatial concerns.
Both of us have put a great deal of effort into the exterior finishes, such as the rafters. Like some recent trends, I have been using a lot of concrete or grayish materials, and I was concerned about this trend. The reason for this is that I can convey a sense of urbanity. In order to avoid this, I planned to blend in with other materials, such as wood with a rough finish, if used. In order to highlight the natural texture of the room, the stone wall penetrates into the space. As well as this, I thought that I would be able to evoke nostalgia through the use of various ingredients commonly found in rural homes.
In my opinion, Odumak is also a space that can only be enjoyed at Uigwisodam.
I felt that an unusual space would add value as an accommodation to the concept of a country house. The first time I visited this area, all I saw was tangerine fields, and I immediately envisioned a wondumak in an orchard. As a result, the sense of the shed led to the construction of the cabin, which was named "The Odumak" and took shape. The structure looks like a hut, and through the window you can see the tangerine fields surrounding you. Also, the interior was finished with wood, like a cabin, to provide a relaxing environment.
Additionally, it added an attractive symbol to accommodation, which may appear simple from the outside. It is interesting to note that people who stay said this. I particularly like the natural and comfortable feel of the space, and the hotbed makes it look very special.
Where is your favorite place to visit?
I like the toenmaru space that connects with the outside world. I feel very comfortable when I lie down here. Despite being open to the yard, you can feel the warmth. Under the floor, there is a small water space. The water space is a symbol of calm and meditation. It was my intention to do nothing here and to rest completely.
What kind of day do you want people staying here to have?
Whenever I build an accommodation, I think about this a lot. Today, there are many magnificent or colorful accommodations, but when it comes to Uigwisodam, I thought it would be nice just to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery. During my stay here following the completion of the construction, I actually felt that sense. Everywhere in the apartment was open to nature, so I was able to move freely whenever I wanted to go outside. It is possible to read, write, or simply remain still. It is my hope that the people who are staying have a relaxing stay.
STAY’s recommended Local Restaurant
Beomil Bunsik
The concentration of sundae soup is different than anywhere else. Perilla seeds have a savory taste that is similar to loach soup in the thickness of perilla seeds. It is not only the sundae soup, but also the makchang sundae and the glutinous rice sundae that have been passed down from grandmother to granddaughter that are unique menu items that can only be found here.
Tulbone Cat
In Seogwipo, a couple of the same age opened a secret restaurant. In addition to its steady-selling chicken nanban, it offers a variety of seasonal menus, including salad udon and tantan jjamppong ramen. It is a delicious restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and a pleasant taste.
STAY’s recommended Local Cafe
Cafe Monocle
It is impossible for me to take my eyes off the bread case filled with sweet and soft bakeries, from canules to pound cakes. Enjoy a pleasant brunch time with various teas made from eco-friendly cultivation in Seongsan-eup, such as green tea, black tea, and flower tea.
STAY
You will notice a house surrounded by tangerine trees and camellia trees as you meander along the small alleys of Namwon-eup and Uigwi-ri, Seogwipo-si. As a result of the wood's texture and the stone wall's tranquility, there is no boundary between Jeju's nature and its surroundings. It is a very comfortable and natural environment; however, as soon as you enter the space, you will experience an extraordinary landscape that can only be experienced here. It is only possible since it is only "Uigwisodam" to the wide windows, the orange waves of tangerine trees, and the building's warm-up that reminds us of our childhood when we played like children.
4:00 pm
A Space That Has Been Missed
It was a pleasure to arrive in Gwi-ri, a friendly village, and Uigwisodam. It was as if I was in the space as I entered the yard, feeling the texture of nature with you and the wall. It is the arms of a space that remind me of my grandmother who comforts me on my long journey. In addition to being comfortable, it is also completely freeing. It is possible to observe nature everywhere. A tangerine tree, a camellia tree, a bracken tree, and an unknown grass flower greet me.
6:00 pm
Tangerine Fields Surrounded by A Warm Sea
I have never seen a hot tub of such a large size before. Each morning, I take a bath, which can be referred to as a swimming pool. My eyes are about the height of a small orange tree. Over time, the body and mind become one with nature. As the sun colored the sea of Jeju, I felt as if I were floating somewhere in the sea. There is an orange field surrounded by a scarlet sea.
7:00 pm
A Perfect Dining Experience Made Possible by Nature in Jeju
Take in the view of the tangerine field which extends from side to side without boundaries as you enjoy dinner. I feel like I am at an atmospheric dining bar even though it is just a light meal due to the beautiful kitchen with trees, grass, and the sky as a backdrop. A tasteful rest time is provided by the sound of unknown grass bugs as the night draws in.
10:00 am
In the absence of any action, it is full
Sit on the floor of the living room and open the folding door wide. A pleasant morning sun and fresh air penetrate deep into the lungs. When the weather is sunny, lay down and spend some time before checking out. Just to appreciate the nature of Uigwi-ri, which moves freely beyond the open space, is a source of pride for me.
4 POINT OF VIEW
ORIGINALITY
Jeju's History and Nature are Embodied in This House
From the moment I stepped onto the story of Uigwisodam, I felt as if I had lived in Jeju for a very long time. In addition to combining Jeju's residential history with its natural environment, the structure of the house conveys a sense of familiarity. It is both unique and special at the same time. Uigwisodam offers a unique space experience, including a wooden structure that has never been seen before, and an ondol room that provides a new perspective for the visitor.
DESIGN
The Architect's Sense of Color
There is always sincerity in your heart even if you do not express it. When people face each other, they feel a sense of warmth and warmth in their eyes. When you close your eyes, you can sense the sincerity of Uigwisodam. Let us walk slowly and touch the wall with our fingertips. It is only by touching that numerous traces of emotion and thought are released. With you, I can feel the reverberation of the forest, caused by the rough wood grain, and I am reminded of basalt while smoothing the rough surface of the stone.
Hospitality
Recovering from the Stimulus Requires Time
There is too much stimulation in our daily lives. In order to recharge your senses and break free from stimulation, head to the story of righteousness as soon as possible. There's nothing like a home theater with large wide windows and green scenery. They're a home theater with unique image quality and sound.
PRICE
It Caters to Everyone's Travel Preferences
There is a relaxed atmosphere even if a large family stays there. The more social workers there are, the more difficult it is to choose a destination, but here, everyone's travel preferences can be satisfied. Jeju is ideal for those who want to experience the natural beauty of Jeju, those who wish to stay comfortably, and those who wish to participate in an active outdoor activity. There is a choice of Odumak with a view of the tangerine field, a picnic with a cute basket on the lawn and a parasol, an experience of harvesting tangerines, or a more stylish BBQ time.
