A Healing Moment Crafted with Warmth

Sometimes, the texture of relaxation is expressed through temperature. Perhaps it's rooted in tranquility and warmth. When we encounter a certain warmth, we finally feel serene. Even thinking about the emotions that gently blossom when we say, 'it's warm,' reinforces this notion. Warmth plays a vital role in warming both the body and the soul. The sun enveloping the skin, a warm cup of tea, the comforting embrace of snug fabric – all contribute to a sense of warmth. Unconsciously seeking warmth when the mind and body are weary may be because one feels comfort in moderately high temperatures. By harnessing the characteristics of this warmth in a dense manner, it becomes a form of therapy. The process of conveying warmth to the body and soul brings profound relaxation.

The warmth of therapy encompasses not only physical temperature but also the inherent 'thoughtfulness' of the journey itself. It involves assisting those who are weary to sufficiently care for themselves—a moment where someone's sincerity gives birth to repose. If therapy were to take on a physical space, what would it look like? 'Waon' embodies the sincerity of therapy. It guides visitors from a welcoming embrace through moments of healing to deep relaxation. The fact that this unfolding process takes place in a traditional Jeju stone house adds a unique dimension. While maximizing an unusual sensory experience, it intricately designs an immersive encounter for three-dimensional therapy. Embracing those who linger with its unique warmth and the inherent temperature sensation, 'Waon' has found a cozy space for therapy.

Exploring the Essence of Therapy

Waon emerged from the hands and minds of the team at Z-Lab. Z-Lab is a team that reflects on the essence of stays and provides a three-dimensional brand experience through space. Instead of demolishing or erasing what already exists, they create a natural harmony with the local area and its people. Waon, too, is a space where careful consideration is given to what should be appreciated and preserved. The most significant influence on the project was the initial impression of the site where Waon is located. The original form of Waon was a traditional, uninhabited Jeju stone house that had been untouched for quite some time. When Z-Lab first visited the site, overgrown vegetation and crumbling walls vividly conveyed the passage of time. The exterior may have shown signs of aging, but its intrinsic value remained undiminished.

Z-Lab sensed the peculiar sense of tranquility and vitality in the old stone house at Waon, a power that cannot be artificially created in a space. Perhaps, it was because the essence of Jeju's atmosphere and unique warmth resonated naturally. From the early stages of planning, Waon was conceived with therapy as its central theme. As Z-Lab solidified the concept, they discovered that the core role of therapy lies in 'warmth.' The genuine warmth conveyed has the power to prompt people to rediscover a space and, further, to gradually transform individual lives. Building on this realization, architectural elements and content that could embody the spirit of Jeju were planned, leading to the realization of its current form.

Safely Tucked Away: A Hidden Haven

Hamdeok-ri, known for its beautiful landscapes and home to the famous Hamdeok Beach in Jeju. A representative attraction on the island, drawing tourists year-round. It's also the place where the first Starbucks in Jeju was established, with numerous hotels and resorts dotting the area. About a 15-minute stroll from the bustling downtown formed around the beach, you'll find Waon nestled away. A hidden gem that requires navigating through small alleyways, it emerges in a tranquil neighborhood, embodying the serene ambiance of Jeju's residential areas with three stone houses.

It's a suitable atmosphere for those seeking a place to quietly spend time, rather than for travelers flocking to the beach. The site, discreetly positioned within the village, and the surrounding landscaping elements create a sense of connection to a new world. Four years after launching the stay, despite the emergence of high-rise resorts near Waon, the initially planted landscaping has grown to safeguard privacy. Close to the beach yet ideal for those desiring peaceful relaxation, it remains an unparalleled location.
MAKING STORY

The original structure of Waon dates back to traditional Jeju stone houses built in the 1960s to 1980s. From the supporting elements like wood and stone to the flooring and earthen walls, every component bore the unmistakable traces of time. While the circular design possessed its own unique beauty, there were many aspects that needed improvement to enhance the quality of the staying experience. The most crucial aspect of this project was to identify the charm of the circular structure and clearly define the boundaries of restoration. Z-Lab set 'Jeju's warmth' as the core keyword and, to accentuate this, undertook the task of uncovering the authentic essence of Jeju stone houses, preserving their original features.

Currently, numerous architectural elements that are challenging to find today have been incorporated into Waon, requiring a process of searching for old photographs and documents to carefully carve out its original form. The preservation of stone walls and wooden eaves, along with the restoration of traces of 'Nanggan' that had been repaired with cement, was a part of this journey. Nanggan refers to a space with a hanging eave, unfamiliar to those seeking spaces, but it holds a unique significance as a symbolic element of Waon. The wooden flooring and crumbling earthen walls were also reborn under Z-Lab's touch. The goal was to remove artificially added materials for restoration and naturally showcase Jeju's authentic elements. The contemplation on where Waon's warmth and comfort originated led to the decision to uncover these elements. Without Z-Lab's affectionate gaze toward the circular design, these elements might have gone unnoticed – from the proportional warmth exuding from the building to delicately carved details. Exploring the space from various angles enhances the richness of the Waon experience. The integration of IoT technology, not only considering visual aesthetics but also ensuring a comfortable stay, adds an impressive layer to the overall design. The traces of thoughtful considerations for the form of rest tailored to guests are evident from multiple perspectives.#

A Journey to Warmth: Nurturing the Body and Soul

Following the quiet alleyways of Hamdeok-ri village, a tranquil stone house reveals itself. Similar to the entrance of an old house, a door preserving the traces of time opens to welcome visitors into the Greeting House. Above the restored circular footprint, various furnishings are strategically placed to enhance the experience of hospitality. This space, crafted with natural materials like stone, earth, and wood, promises a comforting ambiance that enriches the journey of relaxation. Looking up, a lush greenery unfolds directly ahead. As one approaches the central part of the garden, the presence of fragrant herbs becomes more pronounced. The herb-filled garden bestows a sense of tranquility upon those who linger, soothing both body and soul. Over time, the herb garden has grown significantly since its early launch, enhancing Waon's distinctive cozy atmosphere. Between tall herbs, a warm fireplace and spacious bench are ready to add nostalgic memories. Whether immersed in solitary contemplation or sharing time with companions, this space is ideal for savoring moments.

Flanking the herb garden on both sides, the Comfort House and Therapy House are positioned to embrace the surroundings. Regardless of which space one chooses to stay in, the herb garden is always within view. The Comfort House, the first to be encountered, is divided into a spacious dining area, bedroom, and bathroom. Its exterior evokes memories of the past, and it features materials and colors chosen for a comfortable repose. The overall impression throughout the space is a warmth-derived coziness. Utilizing existing earth walls, wooden beams, and traditional construction methods, the interior exudes the unique atmosphere found only in old houses with a narrative built through the passage of time. Various carefully selected objects and utensils under a single theme catch the eye – from baskets in use to objects hung on the walls, down to every piece of cutlery. Given the shared space with two beds, thoughtful consideration has been given to both spending time together and having moments of privacy. Placing a cozy nook on one side allows for diverse ways to enjoy the space. The experience at Waon seamlessly continues from the Comfort House to the opposite Therapy House. Here, one can physically experience warmth throughout the body. From a calmly brewed cup of tea to a hot bath aiding in relaxation, and even a sauna to warm the lingering breath – Therapy House offers therapies that gently release tension from both body and mind.

Waon
I'm curious about the background that led to the planning of Waon.
I stumbled upon three abandoned houses tucked away in the narrow alleyways of Hamdeok-ri. Fortunately, these spaces had not undergone extensive renovations and still preserved the authentic form of Jeju houses. From the early stages of planning, the client expressed a desire for Waon to be designed as a therapy stay. There were ongoing reflections on the essence of Jeju and therapy. As a result, 'Waon' came to fruition.
Can you please explain the therapy offered by Waon?
We have incorporated various therapy contents into the space, adding a unique touch through face-to-face interactions. Waon is the only Jeju stay that directly guides guests through therapy themes, introduces the space, and prepares the therapy house. Waon consists of three spaces. The first, the Greeting House, initiates a conversation about the therapy, guiding guests into Waon. Depending on the theme chosen by the guest, we provide scents, tea, and bath products. While guests are guided through the Comfort House, the Therapy House completes preparations for the guest's therapy, marking the beginning of their personal time.
Are there additional contents added for a three-dimensional therapy experience?
I believe the most important aspect of therapy is the process of knowing and understanding oneself. Understanding what usual stressors are, what provides comfort, and when one feels at ease are crucial elements. I thought that to tailor therapy accordingly, it's essential to be aware of these aspects. The personally chosen theme serves as a device to understand one's stress and discover ways to comfort oneself. I think the selected tea, scents, and bath products contribute to making that time special.
What key aspects did you want to emphasize in the construction process?
Given the scarcity of well-preserved traditional stone houses these days, I extensively researched historical documents. I made efforts to bring 'Nanggan' to life using old photos and drawings. The aim was to strip away cement and concrete, revealing the original materials used in Jeju naturally. We tried to preserve the original flooring, earthen walls, and wooden beams as much as possible. In cases where walls were missing, we used earth to create new ones. To revive the earthen walls, we even mixed earth with concrete to reconstruct them.
What were the key considerations in landscaping?
From the initial planning of the space, I hoped that the garden would be filled with herbs. While moving from the Comfort House to the Therapy House, I envisioned guests picking up bath products, touching and smelling the herbs, and imagining the journey towards therapy. In the Therapy House, I wanted guests to fully experience Jeju. The elements visible through the windows inside the Therapy House are designed to represent the aesthetics of old Jeju gardens.
There are many eye-catching spots. I'm curious about the criteria used to select furnishings and objects.
The core keyword for Waon is 'Jeju's warmth.' I believe conveying warmth is connected across architecture, interior design, and furnishings. Alongside the texture of warm building materials, I chose wooden furnishings and stones that have an aged, handmade feel. Pottery was also included in this selection. Traditional Jeju items like woven baskets and objects hanging on the walls contribute to this ambiance. I made an effort to select items that closely resemble the atmosphere I wanted to create.

STAY

Comfort in existence itself

There are times when I unknowingly neglect my own body and mind. Moments when, using the excuse of daily chaos or the justification of not having the capacity, I fail to nurture my present self. Living caught up in a busy routine, I relegate myself to a lower priority. As if to prove this, the mind constantly drifts away, and fatigue accumulates somewhere in the body. When the desire to escape somewhere becomes heavier, I found Waon.

Waon conveys a tenderness that I haven't bestowed upon myself. The rich aroma of herbs filling the space and the warmth enveloping the entire body. It's a space where a considerate heart for deep rest quietly resonates. No matter what state of mind I arrived with, after spending a day, my face softens. The tension accumulated in my shoulders melts away, and the heart, relieved of its burdens, becomes noticeably lighter. A warm old house nestled on the northern coast of Hallasan, at the mouth of Hamdeok-ri. Waon subtly offers solace when the mundane moments feel burdensome.

Instead of erasing the beauty of its original form, efforts were made to preserve it, and ways to experience it differently were explored, resulting in a design that achieves completeness.
