Modern and Past Times in Hanok
Sihoil, which means "this is also a good day," designed the third space in Gangneung, Gangwon-do. Hanok Sihoil is the name of the space. It is best known for its garden. Soon-woo Choi, author of "Leaning against the Baeheulim Pillar of Muryangsujeon," has a signboard above the living room that reads "Dumun Jeuksi Simsan ((杜門卽時深山)," which is a phrase that describes the feeling of being in the mountains. By opening the gate, you can see a peaceful hanok at the end of a path lined with thick and spread-out trees.

Hanok Sihoil is a hanok constructed in 1970 and includes both the interior and exterior. The interior comprises a living room, kitchen, bedroom, tea room and bedroom, a toilet, a powder room, and a shower room. Except for parts requiring structural reinforcement, existing pillars, beams, and foundations were used, and this showed the persistence of the hanok's structure, as well as the scientific basis of its construction. The living room is composed of a kitchen and a space, so the room has a feeling of spaciousness. A metal kitchen table is neatly arranged to face the dining area. The carpet under the dining table is blue, and there is modern blue furniture and props throughout the room. There is a bed next to a barrel in the bedroom. The sun streams through the window in the morning and gently illuminates the bed. You can enjoy tea in the tea room or in your bedroom, as both are equipped with teacups. When the sun sets, the front, and rear gardens are decorated with gardens and a golden hanok appears beneath the blue flag and in the garden.

A closer look at the space reveals how traditional Korean materials, such as hanji, rafters, wooden pillars, and hemp, can be combined with modern materials and colors, such as metal and blue. The Hanok illustrates the details and intentions of Sihoil in a delicate way. After spending a considerable amount of time in Hanok Sihoil, why not go outside? The railroad trail is a 3-minute walk away, so it is worthwhile to look around. You will also find various foods at Gangneung Central Market if you follow the trail. If you want to hear the cool sound of the sea, you should go east to Anmok Beach. Come and experience Gangneung in a hanok where the past coexists with the present.
