Artworks on Architects in Nature – Lotte Resort Jeju Art Villas
Throughout the history, architecture has been referred to as the most comprehensive form of art that humanity can realize. Because in efforts to build ideal spaces, taking natural landscape, culture, and lifestyle into consideration, all wisdom and senses derived from arts, philosophy, liberal arts, design, mathematics and natural science are all included. Staying true to the idea of architecture, Lotte Resort Jeju Art Villa has been built to illustrate sense and sensibility of five masters from different parts of the world, including the renowned architects in Korea, Seung H-sang and Yi Jongho, Dominique Perrault from France, Kengo Kuma from Japan and a globally established architecture design studio, DA Global Group. The masterpiece with concentration of ethos and passion of these architects, a night in Lotte Resort Art Villas will surely be valuable as more than an accommodation.
Each block – named A, B, C, D and E – boasts different characteristics. For B block, Dominique Perrault reproduced inspirations from surrounding environment such as farms and rice paddies and natural landscapes created by coastal lines and horizons. Curved lines are proactively used for interior and furniture to look feel soft and comfortable. Inspiration from natural landscape of Jeju Island has been added by touches of French architect to generate an exotic and unique architectural outcome. Lee Jongho took C block and named Ilwolpunglim (일월풍림: (日月風林)), a combination of Sino-Korean words meaning sun, moon, wind and forest, to express inspiration from changes in nature. Making the most of continuity of topography, the buildings have been designed in enlarged square shape and a sunken garden is placed to freely let air in. Lights and wind come and go freely, and the essence of the space shall be completed only by those who stay for perfect rest and relaxing. Resembling much of oreum, the volcanic cone of Halla Mountain, D block has been designed by Kengo, based on inspiration from solid yet fluent nature of Jeju Island. Round-shaped basaltic roof hints at the ethos of the Japanese architect who delves into locality and materiality of local areas and then materializes ideas. On the inside, the wooden patterned domes make stark contrast with the outside. Cul-de-sac structure and pattern inspired from columnar joints, jusangjeolli are harmonized to invite anyone to experience organic connectivity between nature and humans.
Placed on the middle mountainous area of Halla Mountain, Lotte Resort Jeju Art Villas may be distant from downtown or beaches. Instead, the resort with finishing touch of masters is cozy and quiet. Most of all, this luxury resort is run by Lotte Hotel to serve guests with state-of-theart facilities and service. The community center by the entrance of the resort readily welcomes guests with an observatory where picturesque scenery of Halla Mountain and coastal lines spreads in front, an outdoor pool, a fitness center and a sauna. Designed by the Korean architect, Seung Hyosang, the community center is maintained well that anyone staying in the resort may pleasantly enjoy the facility in privacy. Indeed, a stay in the architectural masterpiece on Jeju Island will be a special experience, leaving lasting impression.
