A Place with Modern Touch for Retreat in a Former Tangerine Warehouse
Jeju Stay Biuda is a new cultural complex in Jeju Island that is themed around doors to people, culture, travel and arts. Planned by Kwon Jimin, a culture and arts contents planner and designed by one of the prominent architects in Korea, Bang Cheollin, Jeju Stay Biuda is a space built upon participation and contribution by numerous artists, including a calligrapher Kim Jonggeon, a book designer Yu Juyeon, and a fabric designer Won Sojeong. The space hosts concerts, though on an irregular basis, performed by talented artists and vast variety of cultural programs and forums.
Kwon Jimin -the originator of the idea behind Jeju Stay Biuda and the pivotal personality for running the space - gave finishing touch to Jeju Stay Biuda by organically bridging among guestrooms that offer places for retreat with ambience, café and surrounding landscape, with inspiration from warehouses in local tangerine farms – the facility that has been perceived as essential for local residents of Jeju Island. Named after Korean words meaning for instance, “KeuDubShi (endless),” “JaYuRoUn (free),” “Bit (light),” “JiGeum (now),” “YeoGi (here),” “Be In (empty),” and “PumEun (embracing),” each of the guest rooms unveil different design idea. And to ensure relaxation and calmness, the stay accommodates guests with age above thirteen years old. Modern variation on tradition of Korea added distinct atmosphere to Jeju Stay Biuda, with doorplates sprinkled with formativeness of Korean characters, hangul and texture of calligraphy, floor heating inspired from ondol - the Korean heating system, and bedding collection made with high quality cotton that is hand-dyed with natural dyes.
Revolving around its basic principle and pursuit, Jeju Stay Biuda seeks to be inclusive and respect diversity in tastes and preferences, by for instance, serving vegetarian menus. Further, it makes ceaseless efforts in serving guests with healthy food menu with locally sourced, in-season ingredients. With a good balance between traditional value of Korea and practicality of high-end hotels, Jeju Stay Biuda has been hailed for its culture and arts contents through the medium of beautiful architecture that Grand Prize for Completed Residential Building from Korean Architecture Award in 2014, with acknowledgement that the building opened the floor for interaction with surrounding environment and people to win a series of prestigious awards including,.
