Ryokan with Attractive Scenery and Distinct Seasons
Hoshino Resort Kai Kawaji in Tochigi Prefecture is a hot spring ryokan located on the edge of the Ojika River valley, approximately two and a half hours north of Tokyo. Passing through the long ridge's main gate, the waterwheel evokes the atmosphere of a bygone mountain village in Japan. It includes a room with a large window where you can enjoy the view of mountains and valleys changing with the seasons, a Kaiseki dish with the taste and wisdom of a Tochi, an open-air bath along a mountain stream, and activities where you can experience the ancient wisdom born in this area. In addition, the in-house travel library has an impressive collection about Kawaji's history, culture, nature, and crafts, as well as books that you want to read while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee. Feel free to immerse yourself in the rich history and setting.
There are seven different room types, and each one is characterized by a large window with views of mountains and valleys. A comfortable sofa has been prepared for your enjoyment of the scenery. While lounging on the sofa and gazing at the harmonious nature, you will experience a sense of luxury, as if you were taking a forest bath. Additionally, all rooms are equipped with beds and are Hwayang rooms (Japanese + Western). There is also a "Yashu Hemp Paper Room" in Kawaji that utilizes "Yashu Hemp Cloth" grown in Kanuma, Tochi Prefecture. Depending on the room, various mountain villages' four-season scenery is depicted.
At Kai Kawaji, enjoy a meal that will immerse you in the rich flavors of Tochigi, such as freshwater fish and Kanuma's infamous Konjac. Additionally, for breakfast, "Kishijojiru," a dish based on a Kawaji legend, id served as the main course. Due to the high vegetable content, it is not only nutritious but also easily digested, ensuring a comfortable stomach. The hot spring water at Kawaji Hot Springs is reputed to aid in the rapid recovery of wounds. It is said that if you were injured in a previous battle, you were treated here. Enjoy the greenery in spring, the colored leaves in autumn, and the snowy scenery in winter from the two open-air baths located along the stream.
