A hot spring where you can experience the essence of Ainu and Kotan inhabitants.
In Japan, there are indigenous people called “Ainu” who have settled and lived mainly in Hokkaido. Descents of northern ancestry, different from the Yamato, which make up the main Japanese people, have historically had a separate tribal state. "Kai Poroto" is located on the lake shore of 'Lake Poroto', which means 'big lake' in Ainu. The entirety of Kai Poroto is "Kotan," a village of the Ainu people, and guests have the pleasure of living like a resident of "Kotan". Unique to this stay is the sincere respect for Ainu culture and coexistence with other people, and the design and lifestyle that incorporates the traditions of the Ainu culture. Providing you with an impressive yet distinctly unique lodging experience that can only be found here.

All guest rooms were created in the image of the house of the Ainu people, "chise", and feature a table in the shape of the traditional square "ro."
It is arranged so that the guests can easily be surrounded by "ro," instilling a sense of unity. In addition, there are artworks such as “wooden carvings,” inspired by the lives of the Ainu people, and Ainu patterns are applied to the wallpaper and cushions. From the inside, you can see the calm Lake Poroto and the natural forest lush with birch and maple trees, in complementary with the birch logs provided indoors, you can feel in harmony with the majestic nature. All three special rooms have a terrace and an open-air bath allowing you to enjoy quality relaxation comfortably.

For meals, we offer kaiseki cuisine (Japanese course meals) in which you can enjoy Hokkaido ingredients to your heart's content. I hope you enjoy the production of 'Kai Poroto', which is served as a linear vessel with the motif of a log boat used by the Ainu people for trade.
Within the premises, a tripod-shaped “yugoya” (hot spring facility), a characteristic of the architecture of the Ainu culture is set in stone. In the open-air bath, you can enjoy the "mol hot spring" as if you were immersed in a lake. 'Mall Hot Spring' is characterized by its unique dark brown water, as it contains organic humus derived from natural plants. Also known as a "skin beauty bath" because it contains ingredients that are vital in cosmetics. In addition, there is a public space with a fireplace near the entrance and sofas lined up to surround it, so you can fully experience the programs of the Ainu people. We hope that you will spend a purposeful repose, indulging in authentic Hokkaido cuisine, beautiful nature, and hot springs feeling closer to the tradition of the Ainu at Kai Poroto.
