Simple yet refined Kyoto stay
In 2018, "MALDA Kyoto" opened its doors, located approximately a 5-minute walk from the central area of Kyoto at Karasuma-Oike Station. Despite being in the heart of the city, MALDA Kyoto offers a refreshing sense of tranquility. This hotel, which includes a refined café, encapsulates the aesthetics and worldview of the lifestyle brand "Babaguri," created by the German fashion designer Jörgen Rell. Jörgen Rell is known for his meticulous craftsmanship, using carefully selected natural materials to craft a wide range of lifestyle products. In 2006, he founded the brand "Babaguri," which offers a diverse array of items, from clothing, tableware, household goods, and furniture to body care products and tea leaves, all designed to harmonize one's daily life with ease. The unique philosophy of Jörgen Rell, rooted in his distinct way of life, has left a deep impression on the Babaguri brand. Inspired by the distinctive life philosophy of Jörgen Rell, the MALDA team, including architect Mr. Fujimoto, wanted to create a space where guests could reflect on their own way of life by experiencing food, lifestyle essentials, spaces, and services. MALDA Kyoto was born from this desire. One of the materials cherished by Rell is "Malda Silk." At "MALDA Kyoto," named after the golden cocoon, you can experience a collection of lifestyle elements that, like the delicately spun silk thread, are supple and simple yet created with a sincere consideration for people, objects, and the environment. We invite you to savor the "life philosophy" of "Babaguri," a philosophy dedicated to living sincerely and mindfully, through all five senses.
The hotel is a renovation of a 48-year-old building located opposite "Babaguri Kyoto." The interior design and operation are overseen by architect Mr. Fujimoto and the renovation collective "coto." The building consists of a cafe on the first floor and one luxurious private room on each of the 2nd to 4th floors. Each of the three guest rooms is themed with colors – Red, Blue, and Grey. In harmony with the colors of the plaster walls, the design of Indian hand-stitched appliqué bedspreads and accessories varies slightly in each room, allowing guests to appreciate the individuality of each space. All rooms are equipped with twin beds, daybeds, dining areas, kitchens, bathtubs, and toilets, all adorned with carefully selected interior furnishings, including products from "Babaguri." Inside the guest rooms, you'll find spacious south-facing windows that let in the morning light, original Malda kitchens and furniture, comfortable stone flooring that feels pleasant underfoot, floor heating to keep you cozy, and spacious bathrooms. These spaces are designed to free guests from the distractions of everyday life, allowing them to take time to reflect on themselves at a leisurely pace. Additionally, roomwear made from Indian mill cotton cardigans is provided, ensuring that everything in the rooms is gentle and comfortable to all five senses. These elements create an environment where guests can truly relax and enjoy their time.
At "MALDA Kyoto," the entire experience is unified under the "Babaguri" brand, from bedspreads and roomwear to towels, cups, and even amenities like shampoo and conditioner made primarily from natural ingredients. This consistent branding enhances the overall ambiance and comfort of the hotel. Guests who find items they adore can purchase them at "Babaguri Kyoto," located just in front of the accommodation. Within the welcoming space adorned with yellow-green walls at "Cafe Malda," you can discover "Babaguri" baked goods free from sugar, eggs, and dairy products. Muffins and cookies are freshly baked every morning and can be enjoyed with tea or wine. Additionally, seasonal desserts made with the same sugar, egg, and dairy-free approach are available for in-house consumption, so be sure to savor them at the cafe. During lunchtime, "Cafe Malda" offers a special vegetarian curry based on recipes inherited from the "Babaguri" company cafeteria. This curry is a gentle blend of seasonal vegetables and lentils. The cafe also sells various items, including herbal teas and ingredients used in their dishes, making it a great place to find gifts. For breakfast, you can enjoy a quiet morning in your room with dishes prepared using organic vegetables from the Kyoto region and seasonal fruits and vegetables delivered from Jörgen Rell's farm in Ishigaki Island. "MALDA Kyoto" provides an environment where you can immerse yourself in simplicity while surrounded by quality, offering a Kyoto stay that fills your mind and body with the richness of embracing the essentials of life and incorporating carefully selected items into your daily routine. We hope you thoroughly enjoy your Kyoto stay at "MALDA Kyoto."
