A stylish and modest stay from a host who likes vintage
Even though they were born in the 1980s, designer Sin-ye Sie of Skill Ability Dept. and owner Chia-Hong Yeh of Asuka Antique Shop found this three-story house, which was built by a Taiwanese couple in the 1960s after returning home near the famous Fort Provintia from Japan. Deeply attracted by the aqua green tiles on the outer wall, the old signboard, and the layout of this house, they transformed the house into a rare (for Tainan City) multi-complex space with the first floor as a select shop, the most popular coffee shop in the neighborhood on the second floor, and the unique small family layout on the third floor as a stay for world travelers, giving people who love travel, coffee and antiques a chance to meet here.
The name of the stay “PARIPARI” is originally from Japanese, which is further translated into Taiwanese and connotes a sense of fashion. The tiger on the entrance gate, which serves as a symbolic guardian, is from the well-known Japanese art group Gravityfree. The second floor and the overall exterior are in the style of a 1960s Showa tea house, where the coffee and meals are catered through a collaboration with the famous local St. 1 Café. The stay on the third floor is comprised of two suites, “Jiao Jian(Corner room)” and “Mi Jian(Rice room).” The rooms are based on green and brown colors, while Mi Jian comes with “tatami (straw matting)” for guests to enjoy the typical Japanese accommodation style. The room is furnished with 1960s leather sofa, a vintage floor lamp, a black tiled kitchen counter and wooden cabinets that make the atmosphere totally on point.
It creates a diverse space where people with different preferences can come together and share stimulating ideas. On a leisurely afternoon, people are welcome to turn into the alley and look around the rare handmade items at the market or walk up the 2nd floor through the blue-and-white tiled stairs to indulge themselves in a cup of iced drip coffee. Otherwise, you can stay in the modern and vintage rooms of Pari Pari apt. and enjoy the slow pace of Tainan. For the owner, vintage is not only a metaphorical jacket that you can put on or take off for chasing style. Rather, it is about the simple intention of contemplating old things and the eternal aspiration of advocating for the classics.
